The Ford Freestyle is a crossover utility vehicle that was sold by Ford from 2005 to 2009. Largely marketed as the successor to the Ford Taurus station wagon, the Freestyle was the CUV counterpart of the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego four-door sedans. Sharing the Ford D3 platform with the Five Hundred and Montego, the Freestyle was produced with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations and six- or seven-passenger seating.

Following the return of the Ford Taurus for the 2008 model year, the Freestyle underwent a mid-cycle revision and was renamed the Ford Taurus X, marketed in the United States and Canada, as well as South Korea and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam. Following the 2009 model year, the Taurus X was withdrawn. From the 2009 model year, the larger Ford Flex has served as the three-row Ford CUV/wagon.

From 2005 to 2009, the Freestyle/Taurus X was assembled at Chicago Assembly (Chicago, Illinois); the final vehicle was produced on February 27, 2009.

Common Ford Taurus x problems

The Ford Taurus X, produced from 2005 to 2007, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. While there are many satisfied Taurus X owners, it is important to be aware of these issues, especially if you are considering purchasing a used Taurus X.

  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a common problem in the 2003-2005 Ford Taurus X, as reported by many drivers. The vehicle may not accelerate or engage in any gear due to a busted transmission that went out without any warning. Some owners have reported stripped torque converter splines and a broken transmission shaft despite having less than 100,000 miles on their odometer.
  • Throttle Body Issues: Some Taurus X owners have experienced throttle body issues, which can cause the car to slip, become jerky, and require shifting to park and then drive again. This issue can be resolved by replacing the throttle body, as in the case of one owner who had the throttle body replaced under warranty due to the vehicle's history.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: Ignition coil failure has also been reported by Taurus X owners. One owner found that replacing the ignition coil provided long-term relief from the "chugging" issue at speeds of 50-70 mph followed by limp mode, which occurred a few times per week.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical issues, such as intermittent loss of power, have been reported by some Taurus X owners. These issues may be related to the vehicle's electrical system, including the battery, alternator, or wiring.
  • Frame Rust: High-mileage Taurus X owners have reported frame rust, which is particularly common in vehicles that have seen snowy conditions. This issue can affect the structural integrity of the vehicle and may require costly repairs.

While these problems can be concerning, it is important to note that many Taurus X owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. Proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes and inspections, can help prevent many of these issues. If you are considering purchasing a used Taurus X, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential issues before making a purchase.

This is happening more often then not now. Hundreds of thousands of people who own this vehicle have complaints about the same issue. NO one can figure out the issue! Some say a sensor, yet a sensor would not make my transmission clunk like that! A lot say it's the control arm and ford has had the wrong control arm installed in all there does tauras x"s 2007 and 2009. My car has 77,609 miles on it. it's been doing this for the past 40,000 miles! I'm truely scared to drive this car aspecially in the winter!! FORD YOU already have been told and are well aware of this issue ! Fix it or get sued by tens of thousands of us all petitioning to do so and all together as a group. so buckle up Ford!

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-02
  • Date Complaint: 2021-10-20
  • VIN: 1FMDK03W08G
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I bought this vehicle used from a lot. It had 2 previous owners and came with all the service history. I first noticed the vehicle seemed like it didn’t want to go into overdrive . It would get to about 70 mph which would have the rpm’s at 3k! The 2nd time or so that we got it to these speeds (on interstate) the vehicle suddenly clunked , steering wheel jerked , vehicle lost power - I had my 2 children in the vehicle and I was pregnant. We had to pull over immediately . After sitting side the road for a few , it crunk up and we rode out . Only for it to happen 2 more times. And this is not the only thing effected by this . Not long after I got it , I started noticing a hard shift / clunk / slam when going into gear and especially when the vehicle has just tried to downshift and I pressed the gas again . Due to this , I’m unable to tell when and if we can pull out into traffic and such. I must time it good in order to not risk getting T boned etc. Also, with 3 kids in tow , a vehicle slamming their necks and heads is dangerous and scary. So , I’ve had some work done on . Trying to help my issue. Apparently my issue is the same as a lot of others . Which is an intermittent issue . And apparently no matter if all the passed recalls were addressed. Or if the owners of the vehicle serviced it often and currant . Or if the pcm was reflashed , replaced etc - the Ford Taurus X will continue to have these issues . And these issues seem to be the same issues that were addressed in the ford recall in 2020 ( which didn’t include the Taurus X) and previous recalls . This drivertrain transmission has been an issue for the Taurus X since forever . Please check into this. Last thing we need is whiplash or life flights from this .

CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY FOUND THE ENGINE CRADLE/FRONT SUB FRAME HAD RUSTED THROUGH INTERNALLY CAUSING THE SWAY BAR TO BREAK AWAY AND IT HAD PERFORATED AROUND THE MOUNT FOR THE CONTROL ARM. WE WERE EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THE CONTROL ARM DIDN'T COMPLETELY DROP OUT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. FAILURE IS ALMOST IDENTICAL TO THE FORD ESCAPE SUBFRAME RECALL. DEALER TECHNICIAN SAID HE HAS REPLACED A LOT OF THESE ENGINE CRADLES IN THE TAURUS X'S FOR THE SAME FAILURE (SOME WORSE THAN OURS, COMPLETELY RUSTED IN HALF ETC.). LACK OF SUFFICIENT PAINT INSIDE OF THE CRADLES CAUSING PREMATURE FAILURE IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF THERE ARE ACCIDENTS REPORTED FOR THIS CONCERN. I HAVE REQUESTED THE ENGINE CRADLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP AFTER IT IS REMOVED FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our car. We got it back in 2009 when our family was growing and we needed a bigger car to transport our 4 kids to all their activities, from soccer to cheerleading. As of August 2012, it has 125,000 miles on it. While it may not be the best car for those on a budget, it has served us well. We have had some issues with the radio, which was replaced twice by the dealer, and the transmission, which we had to replace at our own cost a couple of months ago. I have since learned that the transmission can be an issue with these vehicles. We also need to replace the power steering, which will cost us around $500 if we do it ourselves, or $1000 if we take it to a mechanic. We've gone through 3 sets of tires and brakes, but that's to be expected with any car. Despite these issues, we still get decent mileage on the highway, between 22.2 and 24.1. Overall, we're happy with our car and the memories we've made in it.

I bought this car used in 2011 with 32,000 miles specifically for road trips, and it did not disappoint. However, I did notice that the driver's side of the second row bench seat was not folding properly. After some investigation, I found that spraying silicone lube in the mechanism and exercising it weekly kept it working smoothly. Another issue I encountered was with the tachometer, which would occasionally read 500-1000rpm too high or too low. Fortunately, Ford had built in a mechanism to rezero the tach and speedometer, which would activate 25 seconds after the engine was shut off. To correct the issue, I would simply start and stop the engine up to three times to provoke the rezero process, which always did the trick.

I am the original owner and I experienced a power steering failure at 38000 miles, shortly after the 3 year/36000 mile warranty had expired. I had it repaired by a Ford Dealer using OEM parts for $850. Unfortunately, the power steering failed again with the exact same problem just six months later. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this product.

  4. Jamel Goldner 2024-10-24

    Vehicle year: 2008

I currently have a company vehicle with almost 70,000 miles in 2 years. The vehicle has plenty of power to pull out on busy streets and the interior is nicely laid out (I have auto climate control). Despite the fact that there is no SYNC on earlier models, the fuel economy is decent for such a larger vehicle. The styling is nice and even after 70,000 miles, it still looks good. However, there are a few issues to be aware of. Firstly, it is important to check your hood as corrosion on the hoods is a MAJOR issue. I have seen over half with corrosion issues. Secondly, the OEM tires are terrible! I am currently on my third set and have switched to GoodYear Integrity tires which provide a better ride and better wear. Lastly, there are some poor manufacturing standards such as doors that don't exactly line up and hood offset. Additionally, the front brakes wear prematurely.

    Vehicle year: 2009

Hi there! I've had this car for just over a year now. Unfortunately, it kept stalling at low speeds and the dealer kept saying it was a calibration issue. We took it in 3 times for it to be properly calibrated. Also, the Continental Touring tires that came OEM are bald at 14000 miles. They only come with a 12 month 12000 mile warranty and trust me...they won't last much longer than that. I was hoping that after paying this much for a car, I could get some better OEM tires that I wouldn't have to replace in one year. The transmission is also a bit unpredictable and jumps all over the place at the wrong times. Lastly, the front bumper is starting to come off and the dealer doesn't know why, but they will try to fix it. Overall, I would say the car is just okay. Thanks for listening!

I bought this car because I needed more space to move things around, but I didn't want to drive a huge truck. With three small kids, this car is perfect for us. Buckling them into the back seats is easier than in my girlfriend's minivan. So far, the car has been reliable, comfortable, and practical. However, the OEM Continental tires handle sloppily - I had the same issue with my '03 Mercury Sable. I switched to Goodrich and it made a huge difference! I did have a problem with the Check Engine light coming on, which was diagnosed as bad camshaft sensors. Thankfully, it was replaced under warranty and they even gave me a loaner car. The timing chain guide was also noisy, but it was fixed in the same way.

This vehicle has a ton of room and leg space, seating up to 7 people. With the seats folded down, it offers a LOT of storage room. The pick up is great, and it rides comfortably and smoothly. The traction control is a fantastic feature, and the dual AC system is super cold and takes care of all the back end of the vehicle! The bucket/captain style chairs for each row make it roomy for folks of all sizes. I had an issue with the traction distribution switch staying on, but Rob, the Service Manager at the Ford dealership in Cape Girardeau, did a great job taking care of it. No problems since!

I have owned numerous vehicles during my lifetime, from klunkers to luxury cars. However, the Taurus X is hands down my favorite car. Its good lines, stability, acceleration, and quick braking make it a joy to drive. The interior is extremely comfortable and attractive too, with everything set up with practicality in mind. I have owned a Corvette convertible, Volvo, Mazda 5, Volkswagen Passat, Buick Bravado, Ford Explorer, Chevy Blazer, Mercury Sable, just to name a few, but I can confidently say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Taurus X!!!!!!!!!

  4. Lucious Glover 2025-01-05

    Vehicle year: 2009

This car is amazing! I had the pleasure of driving the 2008 Ford Taurus X Limited for almost two years and put 59,000 miles on it. Despite requiring some maintenance and repairs, it remained a reliable car throughout. The CD player did break, but it was easy to replace the radio. The driver seat lost its heating function, but I think that was just due to its age. There were some minor transmission issues, but nothing that required a visit to the body shop. However, the most impressive thing about this car was its safety features. I was in a serious accident where the car flipped twice, but thanks to the airbags, seatbelt, and sturdy design, I walked away with only minor injuries. I am so grateful for this car and its ability to keep me safe.

  5. Jennings Buckridge 2025-01-04

    Vehicle year: 2009

This car was amazing! It was incredibly reliable and never once broke down on us. We made sure to service it regularly and always kept good tires on it. With its AWD, it was a lifesaver in bad weather. Did you know that Taurus X was built on the Volvo XC chassis? Two weeks ago, we were T-boned and did a 180-degree spin. Thankfully, my dog and I were both uninjured, which is the most important thing. This car was perfect for transporting our aging parents - it was low to the ground, making it easy for them to get in and out, and we could easily fit wheelchairs and walkers in the back. Our dog loved riding in it too - there was plenty of room for him to stretch out. It was also a fantastic vehicle for moving our kids to and from college - there was plenty of room for all their stuff, and it kept everything protected from the rain. We're really sad to see it go, but at least no one was hurt. Ford should definitely bring back the Taurus X - it was such a great car! I heard they replaced it with the Edge, but it's just not the same.
