Ford Five hundred problems

The Ford Five Hundred is a full-size automobile that was manufactured and marketed by Ford from the 2005 to 2007 model years. Deriving its nameplate from the previous "500" suffix used by Ford during the 1950s to the 1970s on its top-tier trims (Custom 500, Fairlane 500 and Galaxie 500), the Five Hundred was introduced alongside the Ford Fusion as two model lines intended to replace the Ford Taurus. Within the Ford model line, the Five Hundred was slotted between the Fusion and Crown Victoria. Within Lincoln-Mercury, the model line was marketed under a revived Mercury Montego nameplate.

The Five Hundred was an inaugural model of the Ford D3 platform. In several firsts for the full-size Ford line, the platform was front-wheel drive (with optional all-wheel drive), and used unibody construction; for the first time since the Model A, no V8 engine was offered. For the first time since 1978 discontinuation of the Custom 500, Ford offered two distinct full-size nameplates. The Five Hundred was produced solely as a four-door sedan, with the Ford Freestyle taking on the role of the Ford Taurus station wagon.

For 2008, Ford renamed the Five Hundred as the Ford Taurus as part of a model revision (the Montego, as the Mercury Sable), with the Freestyle becoming the Ford Taurus X. Outside of North America and South Korea, the Five Hundred nameplate remained in use until production of the generation ended after 2009.

The Five Hundred was assembled by Ford at its Chicago Assembly facility (Chicago, Illinois) alongside the Freestyle and Montego. Excluding export sales, 241,402 Ford Five Hundreds were produced.

Common Ford Five hundred problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Ford Five Hundred, common problems with this car include engine issues, transmission problems, electrical problems, and interior accessory malfunctions.

Engine Problems

Owners have reported engine problems such as throttle body failure, loss of engine power, unintended acceleration, and total engine failures. These issues can be attributed to a failing Engine Control Module (ECM). To address throttle body failure, replacing the throttle body after diagnosing the ECM is recommended. Timely diagnosis and repair of engine problems can significantly increase the engine's lifespan.

Transmission Problems

The Ford Five Hundred's transmission system can experience frequent breakdowns, leading to symptoms like transmission slipping and erratic engine performance. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) plays a crucial role in monitoring and controlling engine performance. A failing PCM can result in Transmission Control Module (TCM) malfunctions or other transmission issues, ultimately causing transmission failure.

Electrical Problems

Electrical problems in the Ford Five Hundred include instrument cluster failure, continuous clicking during ignition, and an illuminated check engine light that stays on. These electrical issues can be indicative of a failing ECM. Resolving electrical problems may involve replacing relay cables, onboard wiring, and the alternator. Testing the ECM before addressing electrical issues is essential to accurately diagnose failing components.

Interior Accessory Malfunctions

Malfunctions in the interior accessories of the Ford Five Hundred can occur due to a failing ECM, affecting components that require sufficient power to function properly. A faulty ECM can lead to charging system failure, impacting the functionality of interior accessories like the charging system.

By addressing these common problems promptly and accurately diagnosing issues related to the ECM, owners can mitigate potential risks and ensure the longevity and reliability of their Ford Five Hundred vehicles.

  • VIN: 1FAFP25115G
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have 2 very serious and dangerous issues. The 1st issue, the car will shut off while driving and without warning. I'll be cruzing down the highway and out of no where it shuts off. I then do not have breaks or power stearing. This last Winter my daughter was driving it and it shut off while she was on black ice. The car flew into the ditch and the snow was so deep it was compacted in the entire engine so it was impossible to restart the car. It was akso -37 below temperature. It took me almost a half hour to get to her and she almost froze to death. She sustained frost bite on her hands, toes, ears, and cheeks. She almost died. Issue 2, my daughter was driving and all of the sudden a loud noise and she couldn't steer. The rear control arm bracket that is part of the subframe busted causing the control arm to no longer be attached to the frame. She almost flipped the car when that happened. I looked into it and many cars this year make and model had the exact same thing happen in the exact same spot. So that tells me that it is a manufacturer defect. I had this looked at and inspected by Trusted Tires & Auto. Neither of these issues had any warning at all. So now the car sits unable to be driven. Even if it was fixed I won't drive it or let my daughter drive it and I can't sell it because I don't want anyone else to drive it period. It is a death trap literally and puts everyone's life in dangernear that come near the car. It needs to be recalled immediately. This is absolutely unacceptable and Ford needs to stand behind their product. If this car continues to stay on the roads Many people will die because of all the defects on the car.

Latest negative Ford Five hundred car reviews

  1. Richard Price 2024-11-26

    Vehicle year: 2005

The car was purchased with less than 30,000 miles and the previous owner had excellent record keeping on maintenance. However, there have been noticeable issues with the transmission, which have posed a hazard. There have been a few close calls with the car not speeding up when turning onto roads, mainly due to acceleration problems. Based on this experience, I would not recommend purchasing this Taurus model or any other Ford model. It is worth noting that other owners have reported experiencing the exact same problem.

  2. Avery Abernathy 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2005

Our white 500 had some issues with areas of the car not being painted properly (primer showing through) and with paint runs/defects, such as on the lower front bumper, door jams, and inside trunk areas. Additionally, there were some problems with the sheet metal along the rear door seams and rear quarter panel being deformed. There is also the issue of the heat bubble that shows up on the center dashboard console, which Ford is currently working on a solution for. However, it's worth noting that the fuel mileage and cruising range are very good for a car of this size, achieving 550+ miles on highway trips from the 20 gallon tank. The transmission is also impressive.

  3. Collin Howe 2024-10-24

    Vehicle year: 2007

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car that I got back in October 2006 as a Company Car. I upgraded to the limited version and got the leather seats, full power, upgraded radio, and heated seats, which make long trips very comfortable. I've found that it handles fine in the snow, especially after putting snow tires on it in the winter. Overall, it's been a very reliable car. However, the engine has always been a bit loud and lacks spunk. I've had to replace the alternator twice and the heated seats have malfunctioned twice as well. The biggest issue I've had is with the A/C. It stopped giving cold air at low speeds and idle last year, and even after bringing it to a local dealer three times and having the condenser replaced, it still doesn't work right. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my car and appreciate its spaciousness and comfort. Let me know if you have any questions!

  4. Emile O'Hara 2024-10-17

    Vehicle year: 2007

The 500 is a nice, large sedan that handles well on smooth, dry pavement. However, it may not be the best option for those living in rural areas with dirt roads, as the handling can become problematic on such terrain. Additionally, individuals who are shorter in stature may experience discomfort due to limited leg room. Overall, it is important to consider the specific needs and circumstances before making a decision on purchasing the 500.

  5. Forest Hartmann 2024-10-03

    Vehicle year: 2006

The car has had several issues since purchase, including a ticking motor and constant brake problems. Despite the dealer's attempts to fix the problems, they persist. There have also been odd sounds coming from under the dash and the A/C panel, which have yet to be resolved. Unfortunately, the blame game between the dealer and Ford has not been helpful. As a result, I have decided to take my loyalty to Toyota/Honda and will not be returning to Ford.

Congratulations on your new car! It's no surprise that your neighbors are curious about it - the style is beautiful and the handling is even better. It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much, especially since you've always driven Ford products. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Helmer Ward 2024-11-17

    Vehicle year: 2007

At this point, the only thing I would suggest is a slightly larger engine. I understand that it can be a bit of a strain at times.

  3. Damion Thiel 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2006

I wrote a review awhile ago stating I was getting 20 mpg local driving, and mentioned I would write back when I go on a trip. Well, to my surprise, we averaged 29 mpg. Not bad for an all-wheel drive. I am very satisfied.

  4. Wellington Purdy 2024-11-14

    Vehicle year: 2007

The main reason I purchased the 500 was because of its driving character. The ride of this car is equal to that of more expensive models. The total design of this car, both inside and out, is exactly what people expect from Ford. Overall, the 500 is a great value!

  5. Charley Schaden 2024-10-07

    Vehicle year: 2007

Wow, we just got 14 inches of snow and I thought it might be a good idea to get a car with four-wheel drive. I came across a Jeep and decided to read some reviews, but unfortunately, most of them were negative. However, I then decided to read some reviews on my own car and was pleasantly surprised to find that they were amazing! It made me realize that I already have a great car. Although I did experience a weird electrical problem with my dash once (all the gauges stopped working and then started jumping up and down while I was driving), it hasn't happened since. Has anyone else experienced this? Overall, I'm really happy with my car and I definitely won't be trading it in anytime soon!
