The Fiat 124 Spider (Type 348), is a front-engine, rear-drive, two-passenger roadster manufactured by Mazda for FCA over a single generation. The 124 debuted at the 2015 LA Auto Show for model year 2016, with production reaching just over 41,000 for model years 2016-2020.

Largely based on the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 roadster, and manufactured alongside the MX-5 at Mazda's Hiroshima plant, the 124 shares its platform, mechanicals, interior and top mechanism with the MX-5 — it is distinguished by an FCA engineered and manufactured turbocharged Multiair engine, uniquely tuned shock absorbers, unique exterior styling and nominally increased length and cargo capacity over the MX-5.

The 124 nameplate and exterior styling details recall the Pininfarina-designed Fiat 124 Sport Spider, manufactured from 1966 to 1985.

Common Fiat 124 spider problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Fiat 124 Spider, several common problems have been identified:

  • Electrical and Interior Trim: Some owners have experienced issues with non-engine electrics and interior trim. These problems, as reported in the reliability survey, were not always covered under warranty. It is essential to pay attention to the functionality of the electrical components and the quality of the interior trim to ensure a satisfactory ownership experience.
  • Alloy Wheel Damage: Fiat 124 Spider models with larger 17-inch wheels, particularly in mid-range Lusso spec and above, are more susceptible to kerb damage. Owners should inspect the alloy wheels for any signs of damage, as repairing or replacing these wheels can be costly.
  • Stability Control and Driving Enthusiasm: While the Fiat 124 Spider comes equipped with stability control to aid in preventing loss of control, it is still a sports car that encourages enthusiastic driving. Owners should be mindful of driving habits to avoid potential issues related to aggressive driving, such as poor panel fit or bodywork damage.

By addressing these common problems, Fiat 124 Spider owners can better understand the potential issues they may encounter and take proactive measures to maintain the performance and reliability of their vehicles.

The contact researched and was made aware of an undisclosed NHTSA Campaign however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuel pump and the battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000.

  • Summary: My dealership where I bought my car let me know of a recall my vehicle had during an oil change. I then asked if they could fix it to where they said no, that only FIAT could fix it or another dealership about 40 minutes away. I then went to that other dealership and they told me no because it had to be done through the dealership I bought the car from. Then the guy told me he had the parts but he won't do it because he won't get paid for it. I've looked up so many places and nobody wants to do it so what am I supposed to do? Wait for the car to break down. They are literally the worst people and lazy. They once left "forgot" to put my skid plate back on and when I told them the next time I went the lady told me they would never do such a thing or let me go months without it, but they did. This dealership is 2 hours away I can't keep going back and forth arguing with them I need this resolved now, it's been months close to a year since they mentioned the recall.

  • Summary: We purchased a 2018 Fiat Spider from a dealer as a new vehicle. It apparently had recalls but the dealers never notified Fiat that we were the new owners and the dealer has been listed as the owner all of this time so we never received notifications. The vehicle is only used as a summer vehicle and the clutch just went out at 9000 miles. We have multiple manual transmission vehicles in the household and none have ever gone out before 120,000 miles. Additionally, we found out that there were recalls related to the transmission. In regard to repairs, they don't even make the original clutch anymore and have an updated clutch plate and assembly from Fiat for repair. Obviously there was a defect since they don't even make the original clutch. Also if we had been notified of recalls, repairing those may have prevented this problem. We have always had the vehicle repaired at certified Fiat dealers but never have had them fix any recalls aside from recommended service. It appears Fiat knew that there is a clutch defect. We contacted Fiat and they refuse to remediate the problem since its outside the warranty period. With the history of not receiving recall notices due to dealer error and the clutch assembly no longer available but rather an updated improved version, we would hope Fiat would cover at least parts. Repair cost is almost $9000 for a 9000 mile clutch on a car that is like new. Thanks. [XXX] and [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Both the drivers side and passenger side have to be hand pushed back up into their retreival mechanism after use, or they end up hanging down into the path of the closing doors. My car had less than 18,000 miles on it when I bought it, and it was already a problem. This is a known problem in the (2017 - 2020) Fiat 124 Spider world. Fiat should repair these free of charge. I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix that the seatbelts still work perfectly. It has 180,000 miles on it.

  • Summary: The driver side seat belt has stopped retracting, stopped working. After researching different Fiat 124 Spider forums, It seems to be a very common issue on this car. I have an appointment with my service center next week. But it's scary to not have a seat belt that works.

  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Component: Fuel pump failure defect. Risk: accident with injury/death due to lack of mobility. Manufacturer Confirmed: YES, via Recall notice Y92/NHTSA 21V-879. Component Inspected: NO!. That's what I want! Warning lamps / Symbols: Uknown at this time. I am in possession of a letter from FCA US LLC in regard to my vehicle being subject to a recall, specifically Y92 / NHTSA 21V-879 (Defective fuel pump). When contacting all dealers in a 50-mile radius for completion of this recall repair, I am told that they don't have the capability to perform the repairs based on the fact that I didn't purchase my vehicle from them (my purchase was a private sale). When contacting Fiat Customer Care, a supervisor said that they can't force the dealers to repair my vehicle being that they are independently owned and operated. Now here I stand with a vehicle that has a safety issue, an issue recognized by the manufacturer who issued the Recall Notice, an issue that NHTSA is aware of, and the manufacturer saying there is nothing they can do. I am sure I am not the only one having this problem with FCA US LLC. I want an investigation to be conducted as to how FCA US LLC is able to issue a Recall Notice, yet not enforce its completion. But more importantly, I want my vehicle repaired as i should be!

  • Summary: I have received multiple letters in regards to a recall on the Fuel Delivery Module. Recall #Y92. There are no longer Fiat dealerships in my area. The closest Chrysler dealership willing to look at the car is 30 miles away and will not pre order the part or let me make a appointment. This would mean days off work, renting a vehicle, and wasted time. Their other option was for me to go to a private mechanic but I have contacted several and they all state they can not get the parts for the repair/replacement. I'm at my wits end trying to get this taken care of and I don't know what to do next.

  • VIN: JC1NFAEK7J0
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: The seat belt retractors, BOTH PASSANGE SIDE AND DRIVER Side are failing at an alarming rate according to FIAT Forums (and my personal experience). Mine was diagnosed by Ramsey FIAT (Authorized Dealer and Service Center) in Oct or Nov of 2020. I purchased car new, only owner. I was advised by technician that it would be unsafe to drive car in that condition and that both assemblies should be replaced. Dealer said it would be a couple weeks to get the part. However as of June 4th, 2021 dealer has only received assembly for one side. I was given a new ETA of late Aug. FIAT CARES had no confidence in that date being met, as over a dozen updates ETAs have been missed already. For most part car has not been driven due to this safety defect. I opened a case with FIAT CARES customer service late last year. The disinterest of Fiat as the 124 Spider was made on the Mazda Miata assembly line and the parts are interchangeable. The Mazda parts are readily available, but the Fiat dealers are refusing to purchase them to protect their customers. -- Car is avail for inspection upon request, however dealer was the one who identified the issue and the proposed solution. -- Seatbelt assembly, both sides put safety of driver and passenger at risk. -- Problem been reproduced and confirmed by FIAT dealer. -- Problem escalated to the manufacturer, via FIAT CARES Customer Service (2020).

Although I love the car, I noticed that the driver side Blind Spot Monitor was not functioning properly. However, I was fortunate enough to have the manufacturer warranty cover the $2000 repair cost. It is surprising to encounter such an issue in a car that is only two years old.

I'm glad I don't own a Fiat/Chrysler car. The company has a reputation for producing low-quality vehicles. My car had to be sent back to Fiat as a lemon and was replaced with a used Porsche that still had a warranty for almost the same price. If you're looking for a car that's fun to drive short distances, this is the car for you. However, it's not a fast car and the commercials showing it blazing away are pretty much lies. The main issue with this car is quality. After waiting over 2 months for one part, I filed for lemon status on it and was approved, so Fiat is buying it back. Love the idea of this car, but Fiat just can't make a quality car. The stock is VERY limited, but don't let that get used to justify overpaying for this car. It's a unique take on the Miata, but I'd stay away from the 2017 version of this car. After 9 months, my car has less than 4000 miles, mainly due to having driven the complimentary rental cars for a good portion of the year. Update 2019: I had to use rental cars for 7 months before Fiat was forced to pay me back for it. For cheaper than this car, I got a Porsche Boxster with a year of warranty left. That makes up for buying a Fiat.

    Vehicle year: 2018

I have been eagerly waiting for this car ever since Fiat/Mazda brought it to my attention. After months of searching, I finally found the car I wanted. Although most of the cars I found were automatics, I was determined to find a manual transmission as I love driving and believe that an automatic is sacrilege. I opted for the luxury package, which was totally worth it, especially the LED lights that light up the road ahead at night. The car looks gorgeous from every angle and driving it is an absolute pleasure. I love the torque and relaxed nature of the engine. Although I would prefer the exhaust to be a little louder, the car still sounds great. The steering wheel and shifter feel good in the hands, and the short throws make shifting a breeze. Italian cars really connect with me emotionally, which is something that other cars lack. Mazda and Fiat have done a wonderful job with this car, and I hope it pays big dividends for them. Although I would have liked a boost gauge and cooled seats, the leather seats can get hot during the summer. Overall, the car is fantastic, but unfortunately, the dealership experience was terrible. The dealership closed without any notification, and communication from Fiat was abysmal. Although I had to sell the car, I still believe that it deserves 5 stars. I just wish that the customer service was better. If Fiat makes another push to enter the US market, I hope they train and vet their dealerships and make an effort to support customers with their purchase. Update: Sadly, I had to sell the vehicle due to the terrible customer support.Minor warranty issues, such as blind spot monitoring malfunctioning, needed fixing. Despite being under warranty, I was charged a $160 diagnostic fee, and the issue remained unresolved. The sudden closure of the dealership left Fiat owners in a difficult situation. To successfully re-enter the US market, Stelantis must listen to previous owners and fans of Fiat and ensure a competent dealer network.

This car is sporty and low to the ground, but it's comparable in style and performance to the Mazda Miata. It also holds its own in terms of feeling, comfort, and design.

I was initially hesitant about purchasing a FIAT due to concerns about potential issues, but I was intrigued by the fact that Mazda was involved in the production of the 124. I found the car to be stunningly beautiful, especially compared to the Miata version. While I was initially disappointed that the ABARTHs in the US had a FIAT badge on the wheel, I was pleased to learn that this has been rectified for the 2018 models. However, I was still disappointed that the FIAT version did not have the Retractable Fastback that the Miata had. It would have been great if FIAT had branded it as a Targa top. Despite these concerns, I ultimately decided to purchase the Black ARARTH and I am so glad that I did. The color is incredibly deep and rich in the sunlight and the car is even more impressive in person than in pictures. While I did experience some difficulty with the manual transmission in 1st gear, I was able to make some essential tweaks to improve the car's performance. The DV+ diverter valve allowed for more low-end power and helped to prevent turbo flutter, while the addition of an oil catch can helped to reduce the amount of oil that could potentially damage the throttle and multiair unit over time. These changes have made the car much more reliable and enjoyable to drive. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the ARARTH to anyone looking for a stylish and powerful car.I drove the Miata several times during my search to decide whether to drop the Fiat and just get the targa I love, despite the angular futurist look of the Miata, rather than the classic Italian beauty. I suggest getting the loaded version with all options. The Bose system is awesome, and the navigation is easy to use. While touch is disabled when the car is moving, it is easy to manage shifting and using the dial to change channels, making the tech in the car great. I was able to save all my Sirius Channel Favs on the way home from the dealer lot. The Abarth sounds great in either Sport or Normal mode. I noted that the Sport mode dials up the performance a bit, which felt more responsive. I am about 5 foot 10 inches tall and hover around 200 pounds, and I fit comfortably in the car. If someone is over 6 foot, they may find it cramped. I love the gauges and Abarth logos on the seats and steering. It gives the car uniqueness, and people have no clue what the car is when they see it with Scorpion badges all over it. I was asked at a gas station if it was a Ferrari. Lol, I wish. The car takes corners like a champ, and those Brembo Brakes really work well. I know that squirrel thanks Fiat for its life. The convertible top is the same as the Miata and is so easy to put up or take down. Chrysler and many aftermarket sites are selling a lot of aftermarket upgrades, so this car is very good if you want to make it a track car. But, I only bought the two items I spoke of earlier. The Abarth already has a limited-slip diff, front and rear anti-sway bars, front and rear strut tower braces, Brembo brakes, and a killer sounding exhaust, making it more performance than most people need. I am getting around 30 MPG on average, which totally surprised me. In summary, this car is more than I could have hoped for. I would like to see an aftermarket company make a targa top for this car, but outside of that, it's perfect! It has always been my childhood dream to own a Triumph TR7 or Fiat X 1/9 Bertone Targa car, but I could never find one that married my dream with modern day conveniences. I even considered buying a Miata, but I knew I would never forgive myself. :) However, now I am living my childhood dream of owning and driving a EURO roadster, even if it is a Miata in Drag. As of fall 2019, I still fully stand behind my decision. I absolutely love my Abarths 124Spider and I drive it all the time in Sport mode. It handles, drives, turns, and responds like a lightweight convertible sports car should. Despite my heavy foot, it still gets great gas mileage. It has been very reliable and I still get head turns, shouts out windows, and compliments on how cool my car is. I even get many pretty young women slowing down to take a second look or flirting, which is a confidence boost. Lol. I have had no mechanical issues at all, just regular oil changes and tire rotations. I feel that my research paid off as not many people are buying them. In 20 years, I may sell one at Mecum for a major profit as a rare car. I bought two of them, so I will definitely keep one until I die.

UPDATED AFTER 48 MONTHS AND 52,000 MILES OF OWNERSHIP: Hey there! I wanted to share my thoughts on the Miata MX-5 and the Fiat 124 Spider. I've got to say, the Spider is a great car! It's better at dampening noise, has a slightly larger trunk than the Miata, and has the exact same headroom and legroom as the MX-5 - more headroom than the MX-5 RF. The MX-5 has better low end acceleration, but the Spider has better at speed. I can't speak for the automatic 124s but the manual tranny is more than adequate at low end; it just isn't quite as fast off the line as a MX-5. And once you spin the turbo up, the thing leaps from gear to gear in an exhilarating rush. Roadsters are definitely not for everyone; they wrap around your body like a glove and rank only slightly higher than a tricycle on a utilitarian scale, but man, are they FUN to drive. The 124 Spider captures the joy of driving well. It gives you excellent feedback, handles well, has a great little shifter, and looks awesome to boot. How well do they handle? Fastestlaps rates the Abarth at 1.10g on the skidpad - tied with cars like the Ferrari P488 Pista and Lambo Aventador. The Classica and Lusso are rated at 1.09g, tied with some models of the Porsche 911 and McLaren 720S! The drop top goes up and down easily. And because it is nowhere near as common as a Miata (or any other roadster), it gets looks and comments everywhere we go. I highly recommend this car for anyone looking to experience the true joy of driving. The car still gets comments constantly, and continually provides driving smiles. Based on performance, looks, and reliability, modern 124 Spiders are one of the best used car deals you can find, dollar for dollar.

I recently purchased a 2017 Fiat Spider 124 Abarth with a manual transmission and brembo brake package. It has been an absolute joy to drive! The car handles fantastically, has a beautiful interior and exterior design, and I especially love the hood and overall look of the car. I previously owned a 95' 325I for about 9 years (which was a very good car), and a 2006 330I for about 2 years (which cost a lot of money in repairs). I had considered purchasing a 2014 Cayman S, but the price of admission for a nicely optioned used one is about $50,000. After test driving the Fiat Spider, I knew it was the perfect choice for me at $31,700 brand new. Plus, the Spider comes with a 4 year 50,000 warranty compared to the 3 year 36,000 for the Miata. Although I still dream of owning a Cayman someday, I couldn't be happier with my decision to purchase the Spider. I look forward to driving it every day! As someone who is 6'1After reading the comments about the goodwinracing wheel locks, I decided to go with them. You can't go wrong with either choice. I hope you enjoy your car as much as I do! Also, make sure to get the manual, despite what your wife, parents, or friends may say. Shifting gears is half the fun of owning this car. As for my one year ownership update, I've put 13,300 miles on the car with zero maintenance issues. The car has been fantastic and dependable. I only had to take it in for scheduled maintenance once, which only cost me $72. It truly is a great car!
