The Chevrolet Spark (Korean: 쉐보레 스파크) is a city car manufactured by General Motors's subsidiary GM Korea from 1998 to 2022. The vehicle was developed by Daewoo and introduced in 1998 as the Daewoo Matiz (Korean: 대우 마티즈). In 2002, General Motors purchased Daewoo Motors, which was marketing the vehicle with several GM marques and nameplates.

The third generation was predominantly marketed under the Chevrolet brand in North America as the Chevrolet Spark and in Australia and New Zealand as the Holden Barina Spark. The fourth generation was launched in 2015, known as the Holden Spark in Australia and New Zealand. It also serves as the basis for the Opel Karl in Europe, Vauxhall Viva in the UK, and VinFast Fadil in Vietnam, the latter being manufactured under license.

A limited-production all-electric version, the Chevrolet Spark EV, was released in the U.S. in selected markets in California and Oregon in June 2013. The Spark EV was the first all-electric passenger car marketed by General Motors since the EV1 was discontinued in 1999, and also the first offered for retail sale by GM (the EV1 was available only on lease).

In the South Korean market, the Spark complies with South Korean "light car" (Korean: 경차, romanized: Gyeongcha) regulations, which regulate overall vehicle dimensions and engine capacity with tax and parking fee benefits.

Production of the Spark at the Changwon, South Korea assembly plant ended in 2022. The plant would instead produce the second-generation Trax.

Common 2014 Chevrolet Spark ev problems

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV, an all-electric version of the popular city car, has been praised for its efficiency and fun driving experience.

  • Transmission issues: Several owners of the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV have reported transmission problems, such as slipping, failing to engage, or not shifting properly.
  • Battery degradation: As with any electric vehicle, the battery is a critical component of the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV. While the majority of battery degradation occurs within the first 30,000 miles, it can continue to degrade slowly over time.
  • Brake failure: A small number of owners have reported brake failure in the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV, with four complaints of brakes failing and three complaints of brake failure in the 2015 model year. While this is a relatively small number of complaints compared to the overall number of Spark EVs sold, it is still a concern that should be addressed.
  • Propulsion power reduction: One owner of a 2014 Spark EV reported a propulsion power reduction error message, which could be indicative of a problem with the vehicle's electric drivetrain.
  • Digital instrument cluster malfunction: One owner of a 2014 Spark EV reported a digital instrument cluster malfunction, which could affect the vehicle's ability to display important information to the driver.
  • Recalls: The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV has been subject to several recalls, including a recall for a potential issue with the secondary hood latch that could cause the hood to unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Radio software issue: A recall was issued for certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Spark vehicles equipped with the base radio and OnStar, as the radio may lock up due to a software issue, causing the display to go blank and all audio functions to cease. This could result in the vehicle failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for occupant crash protection and theft protection, increasing the risk of theft and injury in a crash.
  • Key left in ignition: A recall was issued for certain model year 2013-2016 Chevrolet Sonic and Trax vehicles and 2013-2015 Chevrolet Spark vehicles equipped with a Bring Your Own Media radio, as the affected radios may fail to provide an audible warning chime when the driver leaves the key in the ignition for 10 minutes or longer, increasing the risk of theft.

In summary, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV has several common problems, including transmission issues, battery degradation, brake failure, propulsion power reduction, digital instrument cluster malfunction, and recalls related to the hood latch, lower control arm bolts, radio software, and key left in ignition. While these issues are concerning, it is important to note that the Spark EV has a high overall reliability rating and is generally considered to be a reliable vehicle. As with any vehicle, regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help ensure a long and trouble-free ownership experience.

I paid $220 to have the Chevy Dealer tell me that was the problem and have paperwork to prove this. There was also an engine light that came, when this happened.

  • Remedy: Dealers will replace the hood striker assembly and hood latch assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 12, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is A222359300. This recall supersedes and expands NHTSA recall number 14V-593. Positive 2014 Chevrolet Spark ev car reviews

  1. Brayan Keeling 2024-08-08

    Great choice for city driving!

  2. Arely Stroman 2024-06-09

Awesome car! It's fast, reliable, and never needs gas, which is great!

  3. Johnnie Gleason 2024-03-24

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I've been driving this car for a little over 4 years now and it has about 63k miles on it. Overall, it's been a great car, with just one small issue where the 12 volt battery died for no apparent reason. However, I have noticed that the mileage isn't the best anymore, as I can only get about 72 miles on it now. Just wanted to share my experience with you!

  4. Hal Langosh 2024-03-20

I love this car! Although my heavy-footed driving style has caused me to go through four sets of front tires, I can't help but enjoy zipping around in this little city rocket. It's quick, fun, and definitely unique. Of course, being a small car, it can feel a bit cramped when competing for space with larger 4x4s and SUVs. But to me, that just adds to its charm. After all, this is the first year for the Spark EV, and the only year with 400ft lb of torque. Who knows, it might even become a collectible someday! Needless to say, I have no plans of getting rid of mine anytime soon.

  5. Flavio Luettgen 2024-03-20

I've been using this car for two weeks now to commute 20.13 miles each way. I'm really impressed with the range - after driving 30 miles on the freeway at 65-70 mph and then another 10 miles on expressways and 35-40 mph roads, I'm still left with nearly 60 miles of range! In fact, the range is even better than the 82 miles that they advertise. I only charge the car at work, as it's free and more convenient for me. The car is packed with technology, as you'd expect from a new sub-compact, and the leather and cloth combo seats are a nice touch. It also includes tilt, cruise, on-star, hands-free calling, and other amenities that were only seen in premium cars a few years ago. I think it's a real shame that GM doesn't advertise this car more - I bought it after seriously considering the Leaf and Volt.
