Chevrolet S15 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common Chevrolet S15 problems

The Chevrolet S15, also known as the S-10, has been a popular choice among truck enthusiasts for many years. However, like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues with the Chevrolet S15:

  • Distributor Shaft O-Ring Seal May Leak Oil: Another common problem with the GMC S15 is a leaking distributor shaft O-ring seal, which can cause oil to leak from the distributor. This issue can lead to a decrease in engine performance and can potentially cause engine damage if left unaddressed. It is recommended to have the seal replaced to prevent further damage.
  • Timing Gears Can Cause Knocking Sound: Some owners have reported a knocking sound coming from the engine, which can be caused by worn-out timing gears. This issue can lead to a decrease in engine performance and can potentially cause engine damage if left unaddressed. It is recommended to have the timing gears inspected and replaced if necessary to prevent further damage.
  • Check Engine Light Due to Oxygen Sensor Failure: Some owners have reported a check engine light due to oxygen sensor failure in the GMC S15. This issue can lead to a decrease in fuel efficiency and can potentially cause engine damage if left unaddressed. It is recommended to have the oxygen sensor inspected and replaced if necessary to prevent further damage.
  • Electrical Problems: Some owners have reported electrical problems with the GMC S15, such as the blinker lights on the dash staying lit and all the gauges stopping working when the lights are turned on. This issue can be caused by a faulty wiring harness or a problem with the aftermarket radio installation. It is recommended to have the electrical system inspected and repaired if necessary to prevent further damage.
  • Fuel Efficiency Issues: Some owners have reported a decrease in fuel efficiency in the GMC S15, which can be caused by a variety of issues, such as a faulty O2 sensor or a problem with the fuel injector. It is recommended to have the truck scanned for fault codes to determine the root cause of the issue.

In summary, the Chevrolet S15, like any other vehicle, has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues can range from electrical problems to fuel efficiency issues and can lead to a decrease in engine performance and potential engine damage if left unaddressed. It is recommended to have the vehicle inspected and repaired if necessary to prevent further damage and ensure safe and reliable operation.
