Chevrolet Kodiak problems
The Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick are a range of medium-duty trucks that were produced by the Chevrolet and GMC divisions of General Motors from 1980 to 2009. Introduced as a variant of the medium-duty C/K truck line, three generations were produced. Slotted between the C/K trucks and the GMC Brigadier Class 8 conventional, the Kodiak/TopKick were developed as a basis for vocationally oriented trucks, including cargo haulers, dump trucks, and similar vehicles; on later generations, both cutaway and cowled-chassis variants were produced for bus use.
Following years of declining market share, General Motors (in line with Ford Motor Company) sought to exit heavy-truck manufacturing. After struggling to enter joint ventures or sell the rights to its product line, the company ended production of the Kodiak and TopKick in 2009. The final medium-duty truck, a GMC TopKick 5500, rolled out of Flint Truck Assembly on July 31, 2009.
For the 2019 model year, after a ten-year hiatus, General Motors re-entered the conventional medium-duty truck segment. Developed in a joint venture with Navistar International, the Chevrolet Silverado 4500/5500 is a Class 4–6 vehicle. Slightly smaller than the Kodiak/Topkick, the Silverado 4500/5500 is marketed exclusively as a Chevrolet (with no GMC counterpart).

Chevrolet Kodiak 2007
- Date Of Incident: 2007-12-28
- Date Complaint: 2008-03-04
- VIN: 1GBE4E1207F
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: IN REFERENCE TO COMPLAINT #10217562, THIS IS AN ADDENDUM. THE VEHICLE HAS SINCE BEEN TO AN ALIGNMENT FACILITY, AND IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS REPOSITIONED APPROXIMATELY 50 DEGREES OFF CENTER BY THE END MANUFACTURER---MONROE TRUCK EQUIPMENT. THIS DEVIATION FROM CENTER WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REPORTED BY US TO AN ENGINEER AT ZF LINKSYSTEM (THE MANUFACTURER OF THE STEERING GEAR), AND THEIR OPINION WAS THAT THE STEERING GEAR WAS NOT AT ITS OPTIMAL POSITION--THIS ADVERSELY AFFECTS STEERING "PLAY" AND THE RANGE OF STEERING LEFT OR RIGHT. UPON TESTING THE VEHICLE, IT WAS EVIDENT THAT THERE IS 1/2 GREATER TURN CAPABILITY TO THE LEFT, COMPARED TO THE RIGHT. (THERE WERE 2.5 TURNS LEFT OF CENTER IN THE STEERING, AND 2 TURNS TO THE RIGHT.) THE EFFECT ON TURN RADIUS HAS NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED. THE EXPERT CONSENSUS WAS THAT THE DRAG LINK SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHORTENED TO MAINTAIN THE ORIGINAL TURNING SPECIFICATION AND PERFORMANCE. THIS MAY BE THE INCITING FACTOR IN THE BUMP STEER COMPLAINT. IT MAY ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OPERATOR'S DIFFICULTY IN RECOVERING FROM SUCH A BUMP STEER EVENT. MONROE TRUCK EQUIPMENT DENIED THE ALIGNMENT AS PART OF THEIR WARRANTY OBLIGATION AND HAS DENIED THAT THEIR MODIFICATIONS HAVE HAD SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE VEHICLE'S STEERING. *TR

- Date Complaint: 2008-02-10
- VIN: 1GBE4E1207F
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,STRUCTURE
- Summary: I OWN A 2007 KODIAK PICKUP CONVERSION WITH HYDRAULIC BRAKES. AFTER A HEAVY RAIN, I NOTICED WATER COMING FROM THE AREA OF THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ROD AT THE FIREWALL. NO FAILURE HAS ENSUED, BUT I WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF THIS WAS A PRIMARY BRAKE PROBLEM OR A PROBLEM WITH THE WINDSHIELD SEAL. EVENTUALLY THE CORROSION OR MOISTURE IN THE PASSENGER FOOT WELL WILL CREATE A SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR

- Date Of Incident: 2007-12-28
- Date Complaint: 2008-02-10
- VIN: 1GBE4E1207F
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I PICKED UP A NEW C4500 KODIAK PICK UP CONVERSION FROM MONROE TRUCK EQUIPMENTS FLINT LOCATION. IT WAS DELIVERED WITH MONROE'S SO-LOW SUSPENSION COMPONENTS AND A PICK-UP BED. IT HAD 0.7 MILES AT DELIVERY. IMMEDIATELY UPON ENTERING THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE HAD A MODERATE TO SEVERE FRONT END VIBRATION--EVIDENT AT 46-50 MPH AND AGAIN-- WITH SEVERE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION-- AT THE POSTED HIGHWAY SPEED. IT HAD MODERATE BUMP STEER ISSUES WHEN ENCOUNTERING ROUGH ROADS MAKING IT EVEN HARDER TO CONTROL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WILL DART ONE DIRECTION OR ANOTHER GOING OVER BRIDGE SEAMS OR WHEN ENCOUNTERING BUMPS. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS OFF-CENTER TOO, COMPLICATING THE ISSUES. HAVING NOT DRIVEN AN UN-MODIFIED KODIAK 4500, I CANNOT ATTEST TO THE SEVERITY OF THE BUMP STEER COMPARED TO THE BASE VEHICLE. I CALLED MONROE AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD A TEST-DRIVE BY THEIR TECHNICIANS BEFORE DELIVERY AND CHECKED-OUT OK. THEY SAID THAT THE STEERING WHEEL ALIGNMENT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE TEST-DRIVE. I INFORMED THEM OF THE MILEAGE AND SAID THAT THE TRUCK TRAVELED AN UNACCEPTABLE DISTANCE FOR A TEST DRIVE. I ALSO DO NOT SEE SIGNS OF AN ALIGNMENT AFTER THE SUSPENSION CONVERSION, AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS NOT CENTERED--OFF 25 DEGREES AND THE TIE-ROD BOLTS ARE UNTOUCHED. THIS IS A VERY HEAVY VEHICLE AND THE DRIVEABILTY IS UNACCEPTABLE AND DANGEROUS OVER ROUGH ROADS. *TR

- Summary: I TOOK DELIVERY OF A NEW C4500 KODIAK 169" WHEELBASE WITH 0.7 MILES AT MONROE TRUCK EQUIPMENTS FLINT LOCATION. IT WAS DUSK. UPON ENTERING THE HIGHWAY, I NOTICED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE AIMED ONLY ABOUT 13 FEET IN FRONT OF THE CAB AND THAT THE LIGHTING WAS VERY DIM. I STOPPED AT THE FIRST REST-AREA TO FIND THAT THE DRIVERS HEADLIGHT (SEALED BEAM) WAS NOT FUNCTIONAL. I WAS FORCED TO COMPLETE MY JOURNEY WITH THE HIGHBEAMS ON. THE VEHICLE WAS BRAND NEW. UPON REPLACING THE HEADLIGHT AT MY FIRST OPPORTUNITY, I NOTICED THAT THE AIMING MECHANISM, SPRINGS, WERE ALL SEVERELY CORRODED. THE VEHICLE IS NOW HEADED TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE AIMING OF THE LIGHTS RECTIFIED. IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE IN THE NIGHT WITH THIS TYPE OF MANUFACTURER DEFECT. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT MONROE TRUCK EQUIPMENT ALTERED THE SUSPENSION OF THE VEHICLE AND SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED THE HEADLIGHT INSPECTION/AIMING IN THEIR PRE-DELIVERY CHECKLIST. *TR

- VIN: 1GBE4E1207F
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I TOOK DELIVERY OF A NEW C4500 KODIAK CREW CAB WITH 0.7 MILES. I FIRST NOTICED A LOUD WIND-HOWL COMING FROM THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER DOOR. I WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD SUCH LOUD INTERIOR NOISE AT HIGHWAY SPEED. IT WASN'T UNTIL I ENCOUNTERING HEAVY FREEZING RAIN, THAT I REALIZED THAT THIS MOISTURE WAS ACCUMULATING IN THE DOOR JAMB OF THE AFOREMENTIONED DOOR, FREEZING, AND MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THE DOOR WAS ASSEMBLED AT GM INCORRECTLY AND THE LEADING EDGE OF THE DOOR WAS 3/8" OUT OF ALIGNMENT WITH THE BODY, SO MUCH SO THAT IT WASN'T EVEN TOUCHING THE DOOR'S LEADING EDGE WEATHER STRIP. THIS ALLOWED ALL PRECIPITATION AND WIND TO ENTER THE DOOR JAM FREELY AND INTERFERE WITH THE FUNCTION OF THE DOOR. THE CONTRALATERAL DOOR WAS ASSEMBLED CORRECTLY FOR COMPARISON. *TR
