Common Chevrolet Gmt 400 problems
The Chevrolet GMT 400 series, produced from 1988 to 2002, is known for its reliability and robustness. However, like any other vehicle, it has some common issues that owners may encounter. These problems are primarily related to the engine, drivetrain, and electrical systems.
- Steering Shaft Knocking Noise: Some GMT 400 trucks may experience a knocking or clunking noise coming from the steering shaft. This issue is often caused by wear and tear or loose components.
- Failed Steering Wheel Position Sensor: The steering wheel position sensor in GMT 400 trucks can fail, causing the vehicle to display a service stability message. This issue can occur intermittently or more regularly, such as every time the vehicle is started or the wheel is turned. Replacing the sensor should fix this issue.
- Transmission Cooling System Issues: Some GMT 400 trucks may experience issues with the transmission cooling system. This can result in the transmission overheating, causing poor performance or failure. This issue is often caused by age, wear, or high mileage.
In conclusion, while the Chevrolet GMT 400 series is known for its reliability and robustness, it is not immune to common issues. These issues are primarily related to the engine, drivetrain, and electrical systems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

I HAVE HAD A LOT OF CLOSE CALLS DUE TO THIS MANUFACTURING DEFECT. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION HAD A RECALL ON 1999 CHEVY SILVERADOS DUE TO THIS MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THEY REMOVED AND CLEANED THE ABS SENSORS AND COATED THEM WITH A SUBSTANCE TO PREVENT FUTURE RUSTING OF THE COMPONENTS. I WENT TO A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP TO CHECK ON THIS RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I BELIEVE THE BRAKING SYSTEM IS THE SAME AS THE 1999 CHEVY SILVERADO AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. I LIVE IN THE SO CALLED "RUST BELT " AREA INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS MATTER FOR ME. THANK YOU. *JB
