The sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series consists of the BMW F30 (sedan version), BMW F31 (wagon version, marketed as 'Touring') and BMW F34 (fastback version, marketed as 'Gran Turismo') compact executive cars. The F30/F31/F34 generation was produced from October 2011 to 2019 and is often collectively referred to as the F30.

For the sixth generation, the coupé and convertible models were spun off to create the new BMW 4 Series nameplate. BMW also introduced a separate hatchback model under the 3 Series nameplate called the 3 Series Gran Turismo (F34).

The F30 is the first generation of 3 Series to be powered by a range of turbocharged engines exclusively and electric power steering (replacing the hydraulic power steering systems used previously). The F30 also marked the 3 Series' first use of a three-cylinder engine in its 2015 facelift. A new plug-in hybrid F30 model was also introduced in 2016. A long-wheelbase sedan version (model code F35) was sold in China.

The M3 model (designated F80) was introduced in 2014 and is powered by the S55 twin-turbocharged straight-six engine.

In March 2019, the BMW 3 Series (G20) was released as the successor to the F30. But the F34 fastback model continued to be available until early 2020. Later, it was replaced by BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé (G26) in June 2021.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-29
  • VIN: WBA3D5C51EK
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: After a drive from Denver to Breckenridge on snowy roads the car was parked in an unplowed parking space. When the car was moved 1 hr later the car had no ABS--flashing on dash, no traction control--flashing on dash and steering was ineffective. Car was only drivable by backing into a space. 20 hrs later the car was to be moved again...again, everything flashed on dash...no ABS, no traction control, drive train failure and car just slid. Steering was totally ineffective. Car was pushed by people on both sides until dry pavement was reached. Car was restarted and I resumed driving on dry pavement back to Denver. Had car "read" by my mechanic and then again by a BMW certified mechanic. No codes were available! The speculation was that my wheel sensors froze. If my Xdrive can't be driven in snow, what's going on. There were two drivers involved in this and both of us reported a total lack of control of the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-09
  • VIN: WBA3K5C59EF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving my 328 XDrive, I went to make a left turn and hear a loud bang like I ran over a boulder or large object. Lost almost all power to the wheels and had to cost the car into a gas station. After which I had the car towed to BMW and was determined to be a failed transfer case at 123k on the OD. This seems to be happening to the older BMWs with the old transfer case. BMW knows this as they have since upgraded the transfer case and no longer sell the old one. This should without question be a recall for any 328d XDrive from this era.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-05-29
  • VIN: WBA3D5C55EK
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: The driver side door lock mechanism failed completely while the driver was in the vehicle, making it impossible to open the driver side door or exit the vehicle normally. Neither the interior door handle, nor the central power lock/unlock control, nor the remote key fob, nor the physical key inserted into the door lock from the outside can unlock the door. The driver was forced to exit the vehicle by moving the driver seat to an extreme aft position, then climbing over the center console into the passenger seat, to exit via the passenger door. If the power seat adjustment had been inoperable, egress would have bee significantly more difficult. If the driver had been involved in a collision, or otherwise needed to exit the vehicle very quickly, they would have been severely hindered from doing so. Inability to operate the driver side door represents a safety hazard to the driver. No warning messages or lamps were present in the vehicle before or after the door lock mechanism failure. The driver side door remains inoperable after completely switching off the vehicle ignition and turning it back on.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-08
  • VIN: WBA3K5C56EF
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: High pressure fuel pump failed while underway causing vehicle to immediately stall in traffic and lock in "Park" making it unable to move. Mechanic (Werner's European Auto) confirmed diagnosis of catastrophic failure of the pump. Part is available for inspection. This part for the gasoline version of the 2014 328 series car is subject to a recall notice but for some reason the notice does not apply to the diesel version of this model. • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-08
  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-04
  • VIN: WBA3D3C51FK
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving on a busy two lane road. The vehicle instantly decelerated and made a large thump while driving at 55mph. The vehicle information system said there was a drivetrain malfunction, and all power was instantly gone. We were able to quickly pull off onto a small section off the road, but not in a safe manner, almost going into the ditch, in which I strongly was anticipating was going to be a total loss to the car as an accident and Injury to myself and my wife. The vehicle then after waiting several hours was towed to a certified BMW shop to be looked at. The shop noted that it sounded like it was a high pressure fuel pump failure that caused the car to abruptly decelerate. The shop confirmed that the high pressure fuel pump did fail and with high probability took out all components associated with the fuel system. The recall/ safety issue only covered the high pressure fuel Pump to 10 years or 120k miles. I have a 141k on the vehicle the issue is the safety aspect of the vehicle suddenly decelerating when at a safe driving speed with no way of knowing the issue with a the pump. These pumps and all components should be covered not only because of cost but because of the general issue of instant deceleration and the safety of not only the driver in the car but those that could be effected driving on the road with the car. This issue should not minimized by the manufacturer based on mileage or years of operation. It’s clearly an issue that is common and an issues that can have ramifications on the customers safety as well as those external of the vehicle.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-04
  • VIN: WBA3D3C58EK
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Subject: Urgent Complaint Regarding Potential Safety Hazard in 2014 BMW 328D Fuel Injector I am writing to report a serious safety concern regarding my 2014 BMW 328D. On about August of 2023, while operating my vehicle, I experienced a sudden and alarming issue that poses a significant risk to both myself and other motorists. As I came to a routine stop, smoke began pouring out from under the hood of the vehicle, obscuring my vision through the windshield. Simultaneously, a strong odor of diesel permeated the interior of the passenger compartment. Concerned for my safety, I immediately investigated and discovered that the fuel injector area was drenched with diesel fuel. Upon further inspection by a qualified mechanic, it was determined that a crack had developed in the fuel injector, causing the leak. This defect not only poses a serious fire hazard but also exposes occupants to toxic diesel fumes, creating an immediate and grave risk to safety. My concern is exacerbated by the fact that this incident appears to be part of a larger pattern of failures in BMW diesel automobiles. I have conducted research and found numerous recalls related to faulty fuel injectors in various BMW models over different years. However, to my astonishment, the 2014 BMW 328D, including mine, has not been included in any such recall despite the clear evidence of a recurring issue with fuel injectors. Given the severity of the situation and the potential danger it poses to myself and others on the road, I urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to thoroughly investigate this matter. It is imperative that immediate action be taken to address this safety hazard, including the consideration of a recall for the affected vehicles. I kindly request a prompt response regarding the steps being taken to address this issue and ensure the safety of all BMW 328D owners.

  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: stall/loss of power while entering highway on ramp. Engine died and would not restart. After inspecting car found the gas tank to be filled with metal shavings which is indicative of a failed high pressure fuel pump. My year make and model vehicle has a recall on the HPFP for the same reason but my VIN was supposedly not affected.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
  • Date Complaint: 2023-07-13
  • VIN: WBA3K5C57FK
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle is 100% BMW Serviced for it's history, showroom to present. Vehicle had been smoking after sitting 2-3 days and driving. We'd park and see wisps of smoke coming from the wheelwells and engine bay. Alarming! Never witnessed open flame, but as the saying goes, if there's smoke... Questionable component: 328xd Fuel Sensor Probe (BMW part #13-53-8-594-893 Fuel Feed Line 135040 ) Complaint/Report pertains to Fuel Sensor Probe failure and resultant fuel propagation(backfeeding/leaking fuel from sensor connection) into adjacent wiring/engine bay foils. Diagnostic System did not report sensor failure until extensive damage and hazard was realized. BMW USA responded to report as NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY(high mile vehicle) and therefore not of responsibility of BMW. According to local BMW Service team the event is NOT UNUSUAL and that several vehicles with same fail/error codes have exhibited similar fuel leakage/propagation/damages. VERY PROBABLE FIRE HAZARD Costly repairs; if system had detected failure when sensor failed we would have had it fixed. We reported the smoking several times but the service department didn't isolate the problem. We continued to drive the vehicle cross-country for 6+ months; each time the problem got worse. WE GOT LUCKY Repair bills came to almost $10k by the time we added all visits and the entire wiring bundle that had to be replaced due to fuel damage. Failed Sensor repair is around $750? BMW needs to implement a way to mitigate this problem to keep from having some potentially catastrophic/lethal endings. Similar problems that have contributed to vehicle fires in these BMW vehicles: 1) HEATER BOX malfunctions 2) PCV VALVE 3) COOLANT LEAK
