Bmw 328ci problems
The fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E46, which was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1997 to 2006, and was the successor to the E36 3 Series which ceased production in 2000. First introduced in November 1997, the E46 was available in sedan, coupé, convertible, station wagon and hatchback body styles. The latter has been marketed as the 3 Series Compact.
The M3 performance model was introduced in June 2000 with a 2-door coupé body style, followed by the convertible counterpart in April 2001. The M3 is powered by the BMW S54 straight-six engine with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed SMG-II automated manual transmission.
The E46 line-up was phased out starting from late 2004, following the introduction of the E90 3 Series sedans. However, the E46 coupé and convertible body styles remained in production until August 2006.

Common Bmw 328ci problems
The BMW 328ci is a popular vehicle among drivers due to its sleek design and high-quality performance. However, like any car, it is not without its common problems.
One of the most significant issues with the BMW 328ci is related to the timing chain. Many owners have reported that the timing chain in their vehicles would skip on the sprockets, causing the pistons and valves to hit each other and the engine to stall. This problem can lead to costly engine repairs, and some owners have even filed class-action lawsuits against BMW. Although the automaker has provided extended warranties for affected vehicles, owners still had to cover some of the repair costs.
Another common problem with the BMW 328ci is related to the fuel system. Drivers have reported issues such as sudden loss of acceleration while driving, which can be caused by a failed fuel pump. In some cases, the power steering and brakes may also suddenly stop working due to a broken fuel pump. This issue can cause the fuel pump to implode, contaminating the system and causing the vehicle to stall.
The BMW 328ci also has a history of engine problems, with the worst model year being 2014. Other engine problems include coolant leaks, oil leaks, and issues with the timing chain tensioner.
In addition to these problems, the BMW 328ci can also experience issues with its electrical system. Some owners have reported problems with the headlights, which can flicker or fail to work properly. This issue can be caused by corroded terminals or a faulty light control module, which may require replacement or software updates.
Despite these common problems, the BMW 328ci remains a popular choice among drivers due to its high-quality performance and sleek design. However, it is essential to be aware of these issues and consider the costs of potential repairs before purchasing a BMW 328ci. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems from occurring or catch them early before they become more serious and costly to fix.
What is the common issue with 328i?
The BMW 328i has many problems, with some of the most prominent ones being timing chain issues, fuel system failures, and electrical problems. Drivers have also complained about overheating A/C and heating systems as well as oil leaks in their BMW 328is, so be cautious if you plan on buying one.
Is the BMW 3 Series 328i reliable?
The BMW 328i Reliability Rating is 3.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 19th out of 31 for luxury midsize cars. The average annual repair cost is $773 which means it has higher than average ownership costs. Repairs are more frequent for the 328i, so you may experience a few more visits to your BMW shop than normal.

Why is 328i so popular?
Since the 328i hit the U.S. market in 1996, it's become one of the most popular high-end sports sedan options and ubiquitous in well-heeled neighborhoods, alongside Mercedes and other luxury cars. With German engineering ensuring high-quality performance and reliability, it's no wonder it's been so popular.

- Date Of Incident: 2015-09-11
- Date Complaint: 2015-12-10
- VIN: WBAAM5347YJ
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PDF. DOCUMENT FOR A FULL EXPLANATION. THE SUB-FRAME ON MY BMW 3 SERIES (E46) HAS FRACTURED AND BECOME SEPARATED FROM THE CAR. THE DETACHED SUB-FRAME IS NOT CAUSED BY ANYTHING I DID, BUT IS THE RESULT OF AN INHERENT DEFECT INVOLVING THE VEHICLE'S SUB-FRAME, A MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE CAR'S STRUCTURAL SYSTEM THAT SUPPORTS THE POWERTRAIN AND IS WELDED TO THE CHASSIS. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE DETACHED SUB-FRAME UNTIL I HEARD A METAL ON METAL SQUEAK IN THE REAR OF THE CAR; AS TIME WENT ON, THE DETACHED SUB-FRAME RIPPED THROUGH THE REAR TIN UNDERLAYMENT/SHIELD AND THE TWO ARE NOW RUBBING TOGETHER. THE DEFECTIVE SUB-FRAME IN THE BMW 3 SERIES E46 MODELS POSES A RISK TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY, AS IT IS A 'CRITICAL VEHICLE COMPONENT' OF THE CAR. FURTHER, A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH WILL PROVE THAT THIS DEFECT IS HIGHLY PERSISTENT IN THE E46 BMW 3 SERIES. AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH U. S. CODES FOR MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY, 'CRITICAL VEHICLE COMPONENTS THAT BREAK, FALL APART, OR SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE, CAUSING POTENTIAL LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL OR INJURY TO PERSONS INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE,' A RECALL IS IN ORDER. PLEASE NOTE THAT I DON'T KNOW "WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?". I JUST PUT THE DATE I HAD MY SUB-FRAME INSPECTED BY A CERTIFIED BMW DEALER (SEE ATTACHMENT FROM COLLISION CENTER OF ORLANDO). I HAD MY SUB-FRAME INSPECTED WHEN I HEARD A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, OWNERS WERE UN-AWARE THEIR SUB-FRAMES WERE DEFECTIVE; DISCOVERY WAS MADE BY A THOROUGH MECHANIC OR BY CHANCE. MY SUB-FRAME TORE THROUGH THE TIN UNDERLAYMENT/SHEILD, SO THE METAL RUBBING METAL IS WHAT WAS CAUSING THE SQUEAKING NOISE. AND AS I UNDERSTAND IT, THE SUB-FRAME TEARS THROUGH THE TIN UNDERLAYMENT ONLY AFTER BEING UNDETECTED FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. THIS IS SO DANGEROUS NOT ONLY TO ME BUT OTHER DRIVERS. BMW NEEDS TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE. A RECALL IS IN ORDER.

- Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, A LOUD METAL TO ROAD NOISE STARTED TO EMANATE FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY VEHICLE. AFTER PULLING OVER AND EXAMINING THE UNDERSIDE OF MY VEHICLE, I COULD SEE THE FUEL TANK STRAP ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE DRAGGING AGAINST THE GROUND AND THE FUEL TANK HANGING DOWN FROM ITS NORMAL POSITION. THE STRAP HAD SEPARATED FROM ITS FRONT RETENTION POINT. A THOROUGH INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE FRONT MOUNTING BRACKET FOR THE FUEL TANK STRAP WAS NO LONGER ON THE VEHICLE. THE BRACKET HAD SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE. THIS BRACKET APPEARS TO BE SPOT WELDED TO THE FRAME. IN THIS CASE, METAL WAS MISSING FROM THE FRAME AT THE WELD POINTS AS IF THE WELDS WERE INTACT BUT THE METAL AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE WELDS HAD YIELDED AND FAILED. THIS APPEARS TO BE A METAL FATIGUE ISSUE OF THE FRAME SURROUNDING THE WELD POINTS OF THE RIGHT SIDE, FUEL TANK STRAP, FRONT MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN LOCATED IN PHOENIX SINCE NEW AND HAS NO SIGNS OF RUST OR OPERATION INDUCED DAMAGE TO THE FRAME OR STRUCTURE IN THIS AREA. *TR

- Summary: I OWN A 2000 BMW 328 CI. IT ALSO HAS HAD A REAR END SUB FRAME FAILURE THAT THEY HAVE BEEN FOUND AT FAULT FOR BY THE STATE OF CA IN A LAWSUIT DATED IN 2006. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THEIR ATTENTION AND THEY ADMITTED THIER FAILED DESIGN, AND BECAUSE SOMEONE HAD TO TRIED TO REPAIR IT BEFORE THEY SOLD IT TO ME, OF COURSE WITHOUT INFORMING ME ABOUT, THEY REFUSED TO DO WARRANTY WORK ON IT, BECAUSE A FEEBLE ATTEMPT AT REINFORCING A FAILED SUB FRAME MOUNT. FAST FORWARD TO NOW, THEY OFFERED ME 2000 DOLLARS ON A 6100 DOLLAR REPAIR BECAUSE THEY HAVE ADMITTED FAULT. NOW THEY RE-NAGGED THEIR OFFER, BECAUSE RATHER THAN DOING IT THEIR WAY, I HAD THE MOUNTS UPGRADED WITH BETTER STEEL AND MOUNTS RATHER THAN USE THEIR FAILED DESIGN. THEY CONTINUE TO TELL ME THEY ARE DOING ME A FAVOR, WHEN IT IS THEIR FAILED DESIGN IN THE FIRST PLACE, WHICH THEY ADMIT TO. WHEN IS IT A FAVOR FOR BUYING A CAR THAT HAS A FAILED FRAME DESIGN, AND HAVING THE COMPANY NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT WHEN THE FAILURE COULD BE THE REAR END FALLING OUT, AS HAS OCCURRED TO MANY PEOPLE, AND SOMETHING THEY ADMIT TO. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND ALSO GOES AGAINST EVERY TYPE OF DESIGN ETHICS THOUGHT TO EXIST. WHEN COMPANIES FAIL ON THIS CALIBER, IT HAS THE SAME POTENTIAL TO KILL SOMEONE FOR SOMETHING THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. *TR

- Summary: THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP COMPLAINT TO MY NHTSA-ODI 10503685 INCIDENT DESCRIPTION, WHICH DESCRIBES A SERIOUS SUBFRAME FAILURE THAT OCCURRED TO MY CAR. THE FORTUNATE SURVIVORS OF THE MANY SUBFRAME FAILURE INCIDENTS WHO FILED A BMW 3-SERIES AUTOMOBILE SUBFRAME FAILURE COMPLAINT HAVE ALLEGED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE SUBFRAME ASSEMBLY DESIGN IN THESE CARS. ACCORDING TO THE NHTSA, ALL "COMPLAINT INFORMATION WILL BE ENTERED INTO NHTSA-ODI'S VEHICLE OWNER'S COMPLAINT DATABASE AND USED WITH OTHER COMPLAINTS TO DETERMINE IF A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT TREND EXISTS." "IF A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT EXISTS IN A MOTOR VEHICLE OR ITEM OF MOTOR VEHICLE EQUIPMENT, THE MANUFACTURER MUST PROVIDE A REMEDY AT NO COST TO THE OWNER." "WE DO NOT HAVE TO RECEIVE A SPECIFIC NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS BEFORE WE LOOK INTO A PROBLEM." "WE GATHER ALL AVAILABLE INFORMATION ON A PROBLEM." "YOUR COMPLAINT IS IMPORTANT TO US." THIS COMPLAINT SPECIFICALLY ALLEGES THAT THE MANY BMW 3-SERIES SUBFRAME FAILURE SAFETY COMPLAINTS HAVE (1) NOT BEEN USED BY THE NHTSA "TO DETERMINE IF A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT TREND EXISTS." (2) BMW IS NOT PROVIDING A REMEDY AT NO COST TO OWNERS BECAUSE THE NHTSA HAS EITHER NOT INVESTIGATED THE COMPLAINTS AT ALL, OR HAS NOT INVESTIGATED THEM SUFFICIENTLY TO DETERMINE IF A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT TREND EXISTS (!) (3) THESE COMPLAINTS ARE OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE TO ALL OF US WHO HAVE FILED THE COMPLAINTS. THE MISSION OF THE NHTSA SHOULD BE TO DETERMINE IF A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT TREND EXISTS IN ORDER TO PREVENT CRASHES, FIRES, INJURIES, AND FATALITIES; NOT VICE VERSA. NHTSA, I AM ASKING YOU TO PROMPTLY INVESTIGATE THESE BMW 3-SERIES SUBFRAME FAILURE SAFETY COMPLAINTS IN ORDER TO DETERMINE ONCE AND FOR ALL IF A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT TREND EXISTS. *TR

- Summary: THE REAR SUBFRAME ASSEMBLY TORE OFF AT THE LEFT REAR DIFFERENTIAL/AXLE MOUNT POINTS, RENDERING THE CAR UNSAFE TO DRIVE. BMW OF NORTH SCOTTSDALE (SCOTTSDALE, AZ) INSPECTED THE DAMAGE AND VERIFIED THAT THE CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON A SMOOTH HIGHWAY. INSPECTIONS BY BMW OF NORTH SCOTTSDALE, PENSKE AUTOMOTIVE COLLISION, AND MERCURY AUTO INSURANCE AGENTS FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF IMPACT. THE CONSENSUS OF EXPERT OPINION IS THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO METAL FATIGUE, AND THAT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH BMW E46 3 SERIES AUTOMOBILES. THE INEVITABLE SUBFRAME FAILURE IN THESE CARS, IN MANY INSTANCES HAVING OCCURRED AT LOW ODOMETER MILEAGE, HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT AND CONSEQUENT LOSS OF LIFE. I WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE IN MY CAR BEFORE THE FAILURE OCCURRED, BECAUSE BMW HAS NEVER ISSUED A RECALL CAMPAIGN FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIR. *TR

- Summary: THE ISSUE I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT WITH MY VEHICLE IS A CRACKED SUBFRAME. THE ISSUE HAS BEEN REPORTED ON MULTIPLE VEHICLES AND THERE WAS A LAWSUIT CREATED ON BEHALF OF BMW OWNERS AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE (SEE SETTLEMENT WEBSITE BELOW). WWW.E46SUBFRAMECLASSACTIONSETTLEMENT.COM THE ISSUE I HAVE IS THAT I TURNED MY VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION WITH MY LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP (EAST BAY BMW OF PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA) WELL BEFORE THE EXPIRATION OF THE LAWSUIT AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SUBFRAME ISSUE DID NOT EXIST. MONTHS LATER AFTER HEARING REPEATED NOISES TOWARD THE REAR OF MY VEHICLE, I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO A LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPORTED THE SUBFRAME ISSUE EXISTED. I INFORMED THEM THAT MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN INSPECTED BEFORE AND THEY DID NOT FIND THE ISSUE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPORTED THE ISSUE TO BMW NORTH AMERICA TO SEE IF THE ISSUE WOULD BE COVERED. BMW NORTH AMERICA OFFERED TO ONLY PAY HALF OF THE REPAIR COST. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. HOW DOES BMW NORTH AMERICA OFFER TO HAVE A DEALERSHIP INSPECT A VEHICLE, FAIL TO FIND THE ISSUE, HAVE THE ACTUAL VEHICLE PROBLEM APPEAR (EVEN WORSE MONTHS LATER), AND THEN REFUSE TO PAY FOR THE ENTIRE AMOUNT OF THE REPAIR? *TR

- Summary: SUBFRAME CRACK!! ON OCTOBER 24, 2006, [XXX] FILED A CLASS ACTION COMPLAINT AGAINST BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, ALLEGING THAT 1999-2006 BMW 3 SERIES VEHICLES SUFFER FROM DEFECTIVE SUB-FRAMES. ACCORDING TO THE COMPLAINT, THE CONSTANT LOADING AND UNLOADING ASSOCIATED WITH NORMAL DRIVING CAN WEAKEN THE SUB-FRAME TO THE POINT WHERE IT CRACKS AND SEPARATES FROM THE CHASSIS, RESULTING IN THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THE COMPLAINT ALLEGES THAT BMW WAS AWARE OF THE ALLEGED SUB-FRAME DEFECT, BUT FAILED TO NOTIFY CONSUMERS OR PAY FOR SUB-FRAME REPAIRS UNDER WARRANTY. ON MARCH 3, 2009, HON. JUDGE [XXX] GRANTED PRELIMINARY APPROVAL OF A PROPOSED CLASS SETTLEMENT, UNDER WHICH BMW WILL REIMBURSE E46 OWNERS OR LESSEES IN FULL FOR THEIR SUB-FRAME REPAIR EXPENSES. AS PART OF THE SETTLEMENT, BMW HAS ALSO AGREED TO IMPLEMENT A NATIONAL SUB-FRAME INSPECTION AND REPAIR PROGRAM. ALL CURRENT OWNERS AND LESSEES OF A 1999-2006 BMW 3 SERIES VEHICLE WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE SUB-FRAME PROBLEM AND WILL HAVE ONE YEAR TO PRESENT THEIR VEHICLE FOR A FREE INSPECTION AND REPAIR (IF NEEDED). THE COURT IS SCHEDULED TO DECIDE WHETHER TO FINALLY APPROVE THE PROPOSED SETTLEMENT ON AUGUST 3, 2009. I'VE CALLED BMWNA BUT THEY WON'T HELP ME. JUST SIMPLY CLAIM THE "LAWSUIT IS OVER." - Model: Bmw 328ci 2000
- Report Received Date: 2021-05-27
- Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2001 BMW 3 Series (323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci and 330Ci), 1999-2001 323i, 328i, 330i, 330xi, and 2000 323i, 328i stationwagon vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) manufactured by Takata. These vehicles are equipped with driver-side air bag inflators that were previously inspected, but not replaced under recall numbers 19V-851, 19V852, or 19V-853. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to explode or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: The inflator could explode during air bag deployment, resulting in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver-side air bag inflator with a newly designed inflator, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 12, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
- Model: Bmw 328ci 2000
- Report Received Date: 2020-01-15
- Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2005 323iT, 325iT, 325xiT, 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 330i and 330xi and 2000-2006 323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci, 330Ci, M3 Coupe, 323Cic, 325Cic, 330Cic, and M3 Convertible vehicles equipped with non-desiccated frontal Takata PSAN inflators and PSPI passenger frontal air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger's front air bag, free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
- Model: Bmw 328ci 2000
- Report Received Date: 2019-11-26
- Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 1999-2001 323i, 325i, 328i and 330i and 2000-2001 323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci, 330Ci, 323iT, and 325iT vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) manufactured by Takata. These vehicles may have received a replacement driver air bag as part of a vehicle repair. Due to a manufacturing issue, the replacement NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: BMW notified owners, and Dealers will replace the driver air bag inflators, free of charge. The recall began November 10, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
