Subaru Wrx sti problems

subaru logo

The Subaru WRX STI is a variant of the Subaru WRX sedan produced by in-house tuning company Subaru Tecnica International between 2014 and 2021. It succeeded the Subaru Impreza WRX STI. The VA WRX STI was the last vehicle produced with the famous EJ257 engine. Production of the WRX STI may resume production in the next generation (Presumably codenamed VC) WRX, however there are currently no plans for a VB WRX STI. STI also offers many factory-backed accessories usually available from dealerships, and accented in STI's signature cherry blossom, a tribute to the iconic tree of the same name from the brand's homeland of Japan.

First Generation (VA; 2014-2021)

The VA WRX STI was released in 2014 alongside the VA WRX. It featured uprated brakes, the famous Subaru Technica International tuned EJ257 4-cylinder engine, an uprated 6 speed manual transmission, along with a unique body kit and spoiler. Interior upgrades include an STI-exclusive gauge cluster, shifter knob, and other unique touches, including Recaro bucket seats in certain models. The WRX STI for the most part featured a red accented interior, over the WRX's black and grey.

Starting with the MY2016 update, the WRX STI gained fluorescent green brake callipers, which was a hit among the Subaru community, and is now an easy identifier of the WRX STI.

In 2020, Subaru announced they would be phasing out the WRX STI along with the EJ257, the last variant of the ageing EJ engine, with the release of the VB series WRX in 2021. Subaru introduced the STI WRX EJ25 Final Edition, based on Subaru's flagship STI Spec R. The EJ25 Final Edition features a range of upgrades including BBS 19” gold forged aluminium wheels, silver Brembo calipers, black door mirror covers, front grille pinstripe in STI cherry blossom, Final Edition engine cover plate, and numbered EJ25 Final Edition badge. Only 75 were produced for markets across the globe.

Common Subaru Wrx sti problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Subaru WRX STI, several common problems have been identified:

  • Faulty Oxygen Sensors and Rough Running: Owners have reported problems with faulty oxygen sensors and rough running in the Subaru WRX STI. These issues can affect the performance and efficiency of the vehicle.
  • Bad Camshaft Seal: Another issue that has been highlighted is the occurrence of a bad camshaft seal in the Subaru WRX STI. This can lead to engine performance issues and potentially impact the overall reliability of the vehicle.
  • STI Ringland Failure: STI ringland failure is a semi-common issue affecting certain Subaru STI engines. This problem occurs when the groove holding the piston rings cracks, leading to engine problems like smoke from the exhaust, loss of power, poor idling quality, and compression loss. Newer models have design changes to prevent this issue, but older models are more susceptible.
  • Oil Leaks: The Subaru WRX STI's 2.5-liter flat-four engine is known to suffer from oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gaskets. Oil leaks can lead to various issues, including engine damage and reduced performance.
  • Turbocharger Issues: Turbocharger problems have been reported by owners, including defects in the turbocharger and oil leaking. These issues can be costly to repair and may impact the vehicle's performance.
  • Electrical Problems: Some model years of the Subaru WRX STI, like the 2015 and 2016 models, have been associated with electrical problems. These issues can be challenging and expensive to address, affecting the overall reliability of the vehicle.

These common problems with the Subaru WRX STI highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of issues to ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

Is the Subaru WRX STI reliable?

The Subaru WRX STI is a classic car. Unfortunately, we would not recommend even the most reliable versions, thanks to the expensive repairs required. Subaru is a solid manufacturer, but the WRX STI isn't necessarily their strong suit. If you want the car for its classic standing, go with the best years available.

What are the main problems on a Subaru STI?

Oil leaks – The STI's 2.5-litre flat-four engine is known to suffer from oil leaks, the most common being from the valve cover gaskets, the crank seal and the rear of the engine, where your PVC baffle plate is located.

How long do WRX STI engines last?

WRX and WRX STI: The Subaru WRX and WRX STI are high-performance sports sedans known for their powerful engines and agile handling. Despite their sporty nature, WRX and WRX STI models can still provide long-term reliability, lasting 150,000 miles + with proper maintenance and care.

How to keep WRX STI reliable?

With that said, here are 8 general best practices to help keep your Subaru WRX/STI reliable:

  1. Warm it up before driving off in cold weather. ...
  2. Make sure you're not “lugging” it in too high of a gear. ...
  3. ALWAYS use the highest octane fuel you can find and never run anything under 91 Octane.

  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THREE OTHER LIGHTS TURNED ON. MY CRUISE CONTROL STARTED BLINKING AND ANOTHER LIGHT WHICH MEANT I WASN'T ABLE TO USE IT OR SWITCH MY CAR INTO SPORT MODE. THESE LIGHTS NEVER WENT OUT. I WENT TO THE DEALERS AND TRIED TO DO A LOT OF RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT IT'S A PROBLEM WITH THE AIR PUMP RUSTING AND GETTING STUCK EITHER OPEN OR CLOSED. THE DEALERS QUOTED ME ANYWHERE FROM 2000-3500 TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. I HAD THE CAR FOR OVER A YEAR AND FOR THAT ENTIRE TIME THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. I WAS NOT ABLE TO PASS EMISSIONS TESTING, USE CRUISE CONTROL, OR SWITCH MODES IN THE CAR. THIS SEEMS LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE AIR INJECTION SYSTEM PUMP WAS STUCK AND NOT WORKING PROPERLY UPON THE STARTUP OF THE CAR. TALKING TO OTHER SUBARU OWNERS, I FOUND THAT THIS WAS A HUGE PROBLEM FOR COUNTLESS OWNERS EVER SINCE THE SYSTEM WAS INTRODUCED INTO SUBARU CARS IN 2006 OR 2007. THIS IS A RIDICULOUS PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE FIXED BY SUBARU, NOT BY OWNERS WHO FALL VICTIM OF THIS POORLY STRUCTURED SYSTEM. SOMETIMES, WHEN ALL THE LIGHTS WERE ON, THE CAR HAD TROUBLE STARTING AND WOULD STALL THE FIRST TIME UPON STARTUP. POTENTIALLY, THIS COULD START A FIRE OR ANOTHER PROBLEM. I HAD A SAFETY RECALL DONE ON MY CAR FROM 2016 FOR THE AIR PUMP, BUT THAT DID NOT AFFECT THIS ISSUE AT ALL AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTED.

  • Summary: WTM-73 I AM REPORTING AN INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED A WEEK AGO WITH MY 2010 SUBARU WRX STI. THIS AIR PUMP FAILED AND I LOOKED UP IF MY VEHICLE HAD THE RECALL DONE ON THIS SPECIFIC PART AND SUBARU SAID IT DID BUT IT FAILED AFTER BEING REPLACED IN 2016 AND THEY REFUSE TO FIX IT. I AM BELIEVING THAT IT IMPROPERLY FIXED CAUSING IT TO FAIL ONCE AGAIN. I ALSO SPOKE TO SUBARU OF AMERICA AND THEY ALSO REFUSED TO ASSIST IN THIS SITUATION. I AM IN DISBELIEF THAT THIS WAS THEIR RESPONSE AND I FEEL LIKE THEY ARE PUTTING MY LIFE IN DANGER WITH THIS PROBLEM DUE TO THE FACT THAT I HAVE TO DRIVE MY CAR TO WORK AND BACK AFTER GETTING CONFIRMATION THAT A FIRE CAN START IN THE ENGINE BAY DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. AFTER GETTING REFUSED BY THE DEALERSHIP I HAD TO TAKE IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO MY KNOWLEDGE COULD NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CARS. I WOULD RATHER TAKE IT TO A PROFESSIONAL AT SUBARU WHICH THEY SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THIS ISSUE AND KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING.

  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON 1-95 THE CAR THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF, CAUSING A VERY UNSAFE SITUATION AS THE STEERING AND BRAKE PEDAL GOT VERY STIFF AND THE VEHICLE WAS HARD TO CONTROL PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED HOME, AND AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS INFORMED IT HAD A ENGINE KNOCK AND WOULD NEED A NEW SHORT BLOCK REPLACEMENT. • Date Of Incident: 2017-05-30
  • Date Complaint: 2017-08-10
  • VIN: JF1VA2L64F9
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: SUBARU IS DENYING ME WARRANTY WORKS OF MY ENGINE'S PISTON RINGLAND FAILURE THAT HAPPENED WITHIN THE 60,000 MILES POWERTRAIN WARRANTY AND BLAMING IT ON MODIFICATIONS. THE ONLY MODIFICATIONS THAT I HAVE ON THE CAR ARE THE FOLLOWING: -TOMEI CATBACK EXHAUST SYSTEM -BEATRUSH MOTOR MOUNTS -BEATRUSH TRANSMISSION MOUNT -BEATRUSH PITCHSTOP MOUNT. -CSF RADIATOR -IAG AIR OIL SEPARATOR NONE OF THE ABOVE MODIFICATIONS CHANGE THE SOFTWARE OF THE CAR OR CAN HAVE ANY AFFECT ON THE PISTONS TO CAUSE FAILURE. MOST OF THESE MODIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN ON MY CAR SINCE THIS ISSUE STARTED BACK ON JULY 31, 2015. THIS ALL STARTED BACK ON 7/31/2015 WHEN MY CAR (WITH 33,979 MILES) GAVE ME A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I PLUGGED IN A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL CALLED KIWI 2 INTO THE ODB 2 PORT TO READ THE CEL CODE. CODE CAME OUT AS P000D. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO SUBARU. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THE CODE COULD BE FROM THE DEVICE PLUGGED INTO THE ODB2 PORT AND RELEASED THE CAR BACK TO ME. FROM THIS POINT ON, SUBARU RED FLAGGED MY CAR AS MODIFIED BECAUSE I HAD A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL PLUGGED INTO THE ODB2 PORT. ON 8/10/2015 (34,615 MILES), I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE LADIN SUBARU DEALERSHIP BECAUSE CEL FOR P000D CAME BACK. DEALERSHIP PERFORMED AN OIL CHANGE FOLLOWING THE TROUBLE TREE AND RELEASED THE CAR BACK TO ME. ON 08/13/15 (34,858 MILES), CEL P000D CAME BACK. DEALERSHIP FOUND CONTROL VALVE ON BANK 2 FAILED AND REPLACED IT. THE CAR WAS RELEASED BACK TO ME ON 8/20/2015. ON 8/24/15 (34,992), CEL P000D CAME BACK ONCE AGAIN. TO FIX THE PROBLEM, TECH LINGE KYLE (CASE #11134774710) ADVISED TO REMOVE TIMING COVER & REPLACE SPROCKET AND RESET TIMING. THEY TEST DROVE THE CAR 200 MILES AND RELEASED THE CAR BACK TO ME ON 9/11/2015. ...MORE STORIES IN THE ATTACHED DOCUMENT TILL MOST RECENT 5/30/2017 WHERE THEY DENY WARRANTY WORK. CAR STILL IN THE DEALERSHIP AS OF THIS WRITING.

  • Date Complaint: 2017-02-24
  • VIN: JF1GR89648L
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: SECONDARY AIR VALVE, RELAY, AND PUMP. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE SECONDARY AIR VALVE RELAY. THE RELAY INITIATES THE PUMP WHICH CAUSES THE VALVE TO OPEN AND CLOSE. AFTER THE RECAL WAS PERFORMED THE SECONDARY AIR VALVE NO LONGER FUNCTIONED PROPERLY AND WAS TOLD BY SUBARU MUST BE REPLACED AT OWNERS EXPENSE. THE COST OF THE FIX IS AROUND N $1500. THE VALVE MALFUNCTIONS ON COLD START UPS AND THE FAILURE WILL NOT ALLOW THE CAR TO PASS A SMOG TEST. THESE ITEMS ARE TOO CLOSELY RELATED TO ONE ANOTHER FOR THE PROBLEM NOT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH ONE ANOTHER. THEY SHOULD ALL BE UNDER RECAL.

  • Date Complaint: 2017-02-09
  • VIN: JF1VA2P63F9
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WHEN PULLING THE FUEL DOOR RELEASE LEVER THE DOOR FAILS TO OPEN. HAPPENED ONCE A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO. THEN ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO IT WAS EVERY OTHER TIME I NEEDED TO FILL UP. NOW IT'S EVERY SINGLE TIME. I FUEL UP EVERY 4-5 DAYS AND IT'S STARTING TO BECOME A HASSLE. I PICK UP MY WIFE FROM WORK SO THAT'S WHEN I DECIDE TO FUEL UP, SHE REACHES OVER AND PULLS THE LEVER MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE I SLIP MY ID/DEBIT CARD THROUGH THE GAP TO POP OPEN THE FUEL DOOR OPEN. SOMETIMES THE DOOR POPS OPEN A BIT WHERE I CAN PULL IT OPEN WITH MY NAILS. IT NEVER FULLY OPENS HOW IT USED TO BEFORE LIKE WHEN I BOUGHT IT. WHEN I'M BY MYSELF SELF I DRIVE OVER BUMPS WHILE PULLING THE RELEASE LEVER REALLY QUICKLY, NOT TO MENTION HOW DANGEROUS IT IS BECAUSE I HAVE TO REACH DOWN WHILE DRIVING. SOMETIMES IT OPENS RIGHT AWAY WHEN I HIT SOME BUMPS SOMETIMES IT TAKES A WHILE. JUST THINKING ABOUT GETTING STRANDED BECAUSE I CAN'T GET IT TO OPEN REALLY WORRIES ME. LOVE MY CAR, HAD IT FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS AND THIS IS THE ONLY THING SO FAR THAT'S MALFUNCTIONING. *TR

  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE FIREWALL WELDS THAT SUPPORT THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER ARE MAKING A POPPING SOUND WHEN I RELEASE THE CLUTCH PEDAL. I FOUND ONLINE THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUED WITH THE 2008-2014 MODEL YEAR SUBARU WRX. I ALSO READ THAT THE FIREWALL CAN COMPLETELY BREAK FROM REPETITIVE CLUTCH AND BRAKE PEDAL USE AND IF IT WOULD BREAK I WOULD HAVE NO CLUTCH OR BRAKE PEDAL TO USE AND COULD BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS ISSUE HAPPENS WHEN AT A STOP OR MOVING AS LONG AS YOU HIT THE CLUTCH PEDAL IT POPS. THIS ISSUE HAS HAPPENED SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR. I AM REPORTING THIS ISSUE WITH HOPE THAT THE FIX BECOMES A RECALL CONSIDERING HOW DANGEROUS IT CAN BE IF THE FIREWALL DOES BREAK.
