Subaru Brz problems
The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are 2+2 sports cars jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, manufactured at Subaru's Gunma assembly plant.
The 2+2 fastback coupé has a naturally-aspirated boxer engine, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive configuration, 53/47 front/rear weight balance and low centre of gravity; it was inspired by Toyota's earlier AE86, a small, light, front-engine/rear-drive Corolla variant widely popular for Showroom Stock, Group A, Group N, Rally, Club and drift racing.
For the first-generation model, Toyota marketed the sports car as the 86 in Asia, Australia, North America (from August 2016), South Africa, and South America; as the Toyota GT86 in Europe; as the 86 and GT86 in New Zealand; as the Toyota FT86 in Brunei, Nicaragua and Jamaica and as the Scion FR-S (2012–2016) in the United States and Canada.
The second-generation model is marketed by Toyota as the GR86 as part of the Gazoo Racing family.

Common Subaru Brz problems
The Subaru BRZ, a popular sports car, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners.
Another common problem is the second gear grind, which affects the car's transmission. This issue is caused by worn synchros, which can make it difficult to engage second gear, especially when the car is cold. In some cases, new transmission fluid may solve the problem, but in more severe cases, replacement synchros may be necessary.
Weak brake pads are also a common problem in the BRZ. The stock brakes, which come from the Subaru WRX, may not provide sufficient stopping power for aggressive driving or track use. Upgraded brake pads are recommended for those who plan to push their BRZ to its limits.
The clutch throw bearings are another known weakness in the BRZ's drivetrain. If these bearings wear out, they can cause clutch problems and make an odd noise when pressing down on the clutch pedal. Replacing the bearings is the only fix for this issue, so it's essential to check for any unusual noises before purchasing a used BRZ.
The Subaru BRZ's suspension is generally reliable, but it's essential to look for any signs of wear or damage when inspecting a used car. Common issues to look out for include knocking sounds when steering or in motion, and an unusually choppy ride. Upgrading the suspension with coilovers, dampers, or bushings can improve the BRZ's handling and performance, but it's crucial to ensure that the stock components are in good condition before making any modifications.
In summary, the Subaru BRZ is a popular sports car that has been known to have several common problems, including valve spring recall saga, second gear grind, weak brake pads, worn clutch throw bearings, and suspension issues. When buying a used BRZ, it's essential to inspect the car thoroughly and be aware of any modifications or repairs that may be necessary.
Are Subaru BRZ reliable cars?
The Subaru BRZ Reliability Rating is 3.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 20th out of 21 for subcompact cars. The average annual repair cost is $672 which means it has average ownership costs. The frequency of repairs is average, but when issues do arise, they are more likely to be severe than with other models.
What is the common issue with the BRZ?
Your transmission throw-bearing has worn out, which is very common on early models of the BRZ. Tackle this problem quickly because it will lead to a clutch fork failure. Replacing the bearing is very easy, and even if you do need to replace the fork, this isn't as hard as you might think.
Is BRZ high maintenance?
A Subaru BRZ will cost about $6,393 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular coupe models by $1,030. There is also a 18.74% chance that a BRZ will require a major repair during that time. This is 2.76% better than similar vehicles in this segment.
What is the life expectancy of a Subaru BRZ?
The community responded by sharing that BRZs can last for over 200,000 miles if maintained properly. Moreover, many users reported that their BRZs had reached high mileage without significant issues. Some users mentioned their daily-driven BRZs with 115,000 and 130,000 miles, respectively.

Subaru Brz 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-04-07
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JF1ZCAC15G8
- Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: On the day before Easter, while driving down W. Colonial Dr., a car suddenly pulled out in front of me, causing me to slam on the brakes. immediately after, it seemed like the brake booster blew out, as my brakes started making a hissing sound and felt like they were losing pressure. Additionally, I noticed a clunking noise coming from my car. Three or four days later, while driving, my brakes failed and I ended up rear-ending another vehicle. I contacted the dealership from where I purchased the car less than a month ago, but I am still unsure if they will help me fix it. There seems to be a problem with the bearings or the suspension in addition to the brakes, but I am not sure if the dealership will help me fix any of these issues.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-08
- Date Complaint: 2024-01-19
- VIN: JF1ZCAC14D2
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: From the very first day I had these brakes pads installed they performed terribly. At low speeds, under 25mph, they would shriek and slightly shake the vehicle; far worse response at higher speeds. I read somewhere online that the remedy for this problem was to "wed" the pads to the existing rotors. So, I performed that as best as I could in a safe and sound manner which resulted in a continuation of the same sounds and violent pitching during braking. I continued to use them for about 4K miles until one day I approached a red stop light and stood on the brakes to make my vehicle stop and it barely responded in time to not cause an accident. I took my car to a dealership mechanic to review and their finding was that the pads severely warped my rotors and they needed to be fully replaced, pads and rotors. Cost me an additional $200 in labor on top of what I paid for parts. My car is now performing as it had in the past. I specifically requested and kept the parts that the dealership mechanic replaced as the Brembo pads were highly suspect to start with and I wanted to provide them as support for my claim here. If they're needed please reply back with an address to ship them to. Never once in the time I've driven my vehicle had I experienced that type of safety hazard before ~ 90K miles from November of 2012. This brake product should not be deemed safe for public roads.

Subaru Brz 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-11
- Date Complaint: 2023-02-20
- VIN: JF1ZDBB10N9
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: This is a new car. There’s was only 31 miles when I purchased. One day, there’s some sound when I driving the vehicle. Once I parked, all the warning lamps was on, then my car wasn’t able to move. When the incident happened, it was only 4 months of using it and only 5,498 miles. Then I bring my car back to retailer and they inform me I need to replace the whole engine because of lack of oil. Even though they Silas’s my car was lack of oil, but there’s no light on the dashboard lights up and told me I need to add more oil. The process of repairing took 5 months. After I read other owners post on social media, I believe I have the similar situation. It says “ RTV is a sealant used as a gasket for the Subaru FA24D engine in the car and is allegedly applied too liberally at the factory. When RTV is dislodged in the engine's oil, it can clog the pickup. That can cause oil starvation“ Roughly a month later of fixing it(5 months of repairs) , there’s a strong scent of gas when I open the door of my car. And I can’t turn it on the first time. Second time of trying turning it on, all the warning lamp went off again. And the car couldn’t drive again. I bring back to the retailer and this is their respond, “ the technician found fuel is pouring out of the pressure relief valve of the left side head due to a possible failing injector on cylinder #3. We must do a teardown to verify the initial diagnosis.” And the final diagnosis The technician found two injector o-rings that were defective, causing fuel to leak and flood the cylinder chamber, which in turn caused the vehicle to stall. Parts can fail for many reasons, in this case we can attribute it to the quality of the parts themselves.“

- VIN: JF1ZDBE18N9
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: During my early commute on a sunny morning shortly after sunrise with the sun at the rear of the vehicle, when selecting the turn signal, the dash display flashes rapidly, i.e., hyperflashing, and it has been confirmed that the rear signal light does not operate during this anomaly. The forward turn signal does function but flashes at a rapid rate. This is a repeatable occurrence when the sun is behind the car in the early morning from early sunrise to about 60 minutes later. Once the sun is high in the sky, the turn signals operate normal. This condition occurs on either turn signal and I have also experienced this with late afternoon sun. I have captured this anomaly on video but this site does not allow upload of .mp4 files. This is a link to a video I uploaded on YouTube showing the anomaly in later afternoon sun. https://youtu.be/dHwMCdlJfYQ I have communicated this concern to Subaru of America and shared the video links to them. Their last communication was to contact a dealer. I understand that the dealer would need to confirm my concern. However, it would need to be a sunny day on the time of appointment plus the duty hours for the technicians are outside the window of the sun elevation when this problem occurs. Other owners of the 2022 BRZ and Toyota GR86 have reported similar experiences on the web forums with turn signals behaving as I have detailed.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-09
- Date Complaint: 2023-02-07
- VIN: JF1ZDBF14N8
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: When the sun is facing the rear of the car, the rear turn signals do not activate, and the turn signals flash rapidly. It is exactly what happens in this youtube video: https://youtu.be/dHwMCdlJfYQ This is a danger, because my car will not properly signal when I change lanes or take a turn. Subaru will not look at the vehicle. In this post in a community of owners for this vehicle, an owner states that the dealer ignored the issue, and Subaru of America sent a generic, irrelevant response. https://www.gr86.org/threads/fast-blinker-caused-by-low-sun.4733/post-96056 This behavior by the dealer and the manufacturer is irresponsible and dangerous. This issue needs to be resolved at the federal level to ensure the safety of myself and others on the road.

- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-29
- Date Complaint: 2022-08-09
- VIN: JF1ZCAC1XD2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: We took the car into the dealership due to an engine light being on and the recall was something they informed us about and we decided to take care of it all at the same time. We have never recieved safety recall information from Subaru. My Son owned the car prior to us and purchased from Subaru dealership. After several weeks of the car being at the dealership and a very large bill we picked up the car and drove 14 miles and the engine light went on again. We returned the car to dealership and they had it another week at least and we picked it up again with no further engine light coming back on. The engine light never turned back on even when the car stalled out and heard a banging sound. We had car towed to Subaru dealership. The car has been there for several weeks and now they are telling us we need to pay 8000.00 to fix. The car seemed to have lost power after we had recall and feel that the our safety was at risk and my Sons safety as well due to not receiving safety recall notification and service of the recall not resolving the issue with the motor in fact making it worse. Subaru of America has let us know they have no responsibility and will not assist us with any repairs even though our car is stuck in another state and clearly this has been an ongoing issue with this make, model, and year. I had experienced the pressing on the brake and feeling acceleration but I thought maybe my foot had slipped or something as it only happened once. I am thankful that we were only driving between 35 and 45mph when the car actually died while driving.

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your BRZ! While it may be a bit small for larger individuals or families with children, it's definitely a fun car to drive. It's also fantastic to hear that you haven't had any issues with it in the six years you've owned it.

If you're considering purchasing this car, it's important to keep in mind the potential expense of walnut shell blasting for your intake valves. It's unfortunate that Subaru hasn't followed Toyota's lead in combining Direct Injection with Port Injection to automatically clean the intakes. However, despite this issue, these cars handle wonderfully and are a blast to drive. It's just a shame that some owners have experienced blown head gaskets, especially on vehicles that are pushed to their limits like the BRZ. Hopefully, Subaru will eventually realize that the boxer design is becoming outdated, as even Porsche is moving away from it. While the design may look and sound great, it's important to consider the potential maintenance costs. Overall, these cars are a joy to drive, but it's important to keep in mind the potential expenses and issues that may arise.

I recently experienced an issue with my 2017 Subaru BRZ Limited's manual transmission. The car had less than 50,000 miles and was 5 years old at the time. After taking it to a Subaru dealer near me, Subaru of North Tampa, they diagnosed the issue as worn synchronizers on the gears and recommended a transmission replacement. Unfortunately, the cost of repair was $5,000.00 and Subaru of America could not cover it due to the warranty being over 5 years and a few miles over the 50,000-mile limit. While I understand the warranty limitations, I was disappointed as I have owned several cars over the past 45 years and never had any issues with the transmission or engine. Despite this experience, I appreciate the customer service provided by Patricia and Cheri from Subaru customer care. Although the outcome was not what I had hoped for, I am grateful for their assistance and will continue to consider Subaru as a reliable car company.

I have had to visit the dealer five times due to issues with the head unit. Despite replacing the head unit, I was informed that my amp was also faulty. This does not explain why my phone does not work with the new head unit and software update. With only 6800 miles on the car, I am disappointed and do not trust it. It seems that Subaru did not test anything. After invoking the Lemon Law, my infotainment unit was deemed broken and replaced in a record time of 8 days. However, the new unit was not tested and I had to return the car after being told I was too stupid to sync my phone to the car. The loaner car provided, a 2019 Outback, displayed some issues with its infotainment system. Despite the ongoing lawsuit on the 2018 infotainment units, Harmon Karmon has still not fixed their problems. I am disappointed with the lousy customer service at Corporate and my local dealer, and Subaru's failure to address the numerous issues with the electronics on this car. I see no reason to buy another Subaru.

I recently upgraded my 2013 BRZ to a 2017 model, but unfortunately, I found it to be a bit disappointing. While it does have some nice improvements like a shark-fin antenna and LED lighting, there are several areas where Subaru missed the mark. As a sports car, it should have better acceleration, but it feels slow and unresponsive. The standard OEM navigation map is no longer available, leaving a large dead area on the dash. Additionally, the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone is unreliable, and the steering wheel doesn't feel as nice as the previous model. The rear seating area is also smaller, making it difficult to comfortably seat four adults. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the improvements that were made and look forward to seeing what Subaru does in the future.I'm disappointed with my factory-ordered brand new car. There are various rattles and vibrations that shouldn't be happening. Even though the car is blue, the pearl blue color isn't impressive. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have traded in my 2013 for this car. However, I appreciate the opportunity to update my review. I've decided to trade in this car for a 'real' American sports car - the C8 Corvette. Thank you, Subaru.
