Nissan Pulsar problems

The Nissan Pulsar (Japanese: 日産・パルサー, Hepburn: Nissan Parusā) is a line of automobiles produced by the Japanese automaker Nissan from 1978 until 2000, when it was replaced by the Nissan Bluebird Sylphy in the Japanese market.

Between 2000 and 2005, the name "Pulsar" has been used in Australia and New Zealand on rebadged versions of the Sylphy. This arrangement continued until the introduction of the Nissan Tiida (C11) in 2005; at this time the Pulsar name was retired. In 2013, Nissan replaced the Tiida in Australia and New Zealand with two new models badged as Pulsar. These were based on the Sylphy (B17) sedan and Tiida (C12) hatchback, the latter also sold in Thailand under the Pulsar name. In 2014, a European-only replacement for the Tiida was introduced using the Pulsar nameplate.

The original Pulsar was a hatchback to be sold exclusively at a different Nissan Japan dealership network called Nissan Cherry Store as a larger five-door hatchback alternative to the Nissan Cherry. Although Pulsar models were front-wheel drive from introduction, Nissan did offer four-wheel drive as an option on select models internationally.

The Pulsar sold in Japan originally served as the intermediate model offered at Nissan dealerships Nissan Cherry Store between the Nissan Violet and the Cherry, while different versions of the Pulsar sold at other Japanese networks served as the base model, with other larger Nissan products. Various Pulsar-based models were exported as international market conditions dictated, sometimes labeled as "Sunny", "Cherry" or "Sentra", while the internationally labeled product was actually a Pulsar and not a Japanese market Sunny or Cherry.

The name "Pulsar" is taken from pulsar (portmanteau of pulsating star), a highly magnetized, rotating neutron star.

Common Nissan Pulsar problems

The Nissan Pulsar is a popular car model known for its spacious interior and legroom, but it has been plagued with several common problems that affect its reliability and performance. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Nissan Pulsar, based on complaints from owners and expert reviews:

Engine Problems

  1. Engine Lag: Many Nissan Pulsar owners report a noticeable lag in engine response when they press the accelerator. This issue is often attributed to the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system, which can struggle to deliver smooth and consistent power to the wheels.
  2. Frequent Oil Top-ups: Some Pulsar owners have experienced frequent oil leaks due to faulty piston rings or valve seals. This issue can lead to increased oil consumption and the need for more frequent top-ups between regular oil changes.
  3. Timing Chain Issues: Some Pulsar models, particularly those with higher mileage, may experience problems with the timing chain. This can result in a tinny sound, especially during cold start-ups.
  4. Cooling System Problems: Nissan Pulsar owners have reported leaks from the radiator and overheating issues due to a malfunctioning thermostat. These problems can lead to engine damage if left unaddressed.

Transmission Problems

  1. CVT Failure: The CVT transmission is a common source of frustration for Nissan Pulsar owners. When the CVT transmission fails, it can cause shuddering, jerking, and loud noises when shifting gears. Repairing or replacing the CVT transmission can be expensive, with costs ranging from $3500 to $4500.
  2. Transmission Leaks: Leaks from the transmission are another common problem reported by Pulsar owners. These leaks can lead to reduced transmission fluid levels, which can cause further damage to the transmission.

Other Common Problems

  1. Electrical Issues: Some Nissan Pulsar models have experienced electrical problems, including issues with the fuse diagram and air conditioning system. These issues can be costly to repair and may require the attention of a professional auto electrician.
  2. Recall Campaigns: Nissan has issued several recall campaigns for the Pulsar, including one for vehicles with an automatic headlight self-levelling system that may not function correctly when the vehicle is fully laden. Another recall campaign related to the rear oxygen sensor on cars built between 10/04/2015 and 07/06/2016.

In conclusion, while the Nissan Pulsar offers a spacious interior and good legroom, it has been plagued with several common problems that affect its reliability and performance. Engine lag, frequent oil top-ups, timing chain issues, cooling system problems, CVT failure, transmission leaks, electrical issues, and recall campaigns are all issues that Pulsar owners have reported. If you're considering purchasing a Nissan Pulsar, it's essential to be aware of these common problems and factor in the potential costs of repairs and maintenance.
