The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It was marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.

The first generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short wheelbase version. Second generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants. A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long wheelbase format. The fourth generation was introduced in 2020, when Kia also began using the Carnival nameplate worldwide.

First generation (KV-II; 1998)

The first generation model was manufactured and marketed differently for specific regions, including under a joint venture in the Chinese market with Dongfeng Yueda Kia, as well as the Naza Ria in Malaysia.

In Indonesia and the Philippines, both Carnival/Sedona names were used. Initially introduced as the Carnival in 2001, from 2003 onwards, it was renamed as the Sedona.

Common Kia Carnival problems

  • Summary: We have been having an acceleration issue for over a year now. The vehicle will be running fine and the randomly not go over 30 MPH. You could have your foot the floor and the vehicle will not shift or go above 3 rpm’s. This has caused us to be in many dangerous scenarios getting onto an interstate. This has almost caused us to be rear ended multiple times. Problem has be reproduced at the dealer and “repaired” though the problem continues to happen. Sometimes the engine warning light is on when it happens, others times it is not and happens with zero warning.

This is very dangerous and should not have been passed. Kia must remedy this issue at once considering how many lives are at risk.

  • Summary: Brought vehicle in for repair SC292 vehicle roof trim. Dealer (Safford Kia in Fredricksburg, VA) informed me that the trim was in good condition and does not qualify for the recall. I informed the dealer multiple times that the trim has already come off multiple times and is a hazard. They then reiterated that it didn’t qualify for a repair under their standards. Same information was presented directly to Kia Care and I was given the same information. Upon arriving home, a quick glance at the roof trim showed that it was, in fact, separated from the roof in one area and I was able to gently tug at the trim to remove it completely. The dealership failed to do an adequate inspection of the vehicle and repair it as they should have.

  • Summary: The rear sliding doors are unsafe. The sensors do not stop and reverse under pressure of an object in its path. Under a recall "PE22-004" they slowed down the doors and added 2 beep sounds, but that doesn't help when a child has their hand or arm in the path of a closing sliding door. The pressure required to stop the door is extremely unsafe. There needs to be replaced safety pinch sensors added. I tested this as an adult, 200 lbs, and takes an extreme amount of force to stop the door motor from closing on your body parts and will cause injury.

    Vehicle year: 2022

    Although this vehicle has some issues, the biggest concern is with Kia Customer Care. Despite being brand new, it has already been subject to two recalls. While the outlets not working is a minor issue, the faulty fuel pump poses a safety hazard. Unfortunately, the parts needed for a simple fix are not currently available. It has been frustrating to deal with the blame game between Kia and the dealership, and unfortunately, no progress has been made in the past nine days. It would be helpful if Kia could provide a rental or loaner vehicle during this time. If you do decide to purchase this vehicle, it may be wise to choose a local dealership that you know and trust. Additionally, please note that there is currently no Kia tow hitch available.

    This is our 5th Kia and we have always been big fans of the brand. We loved our 2015 Sedona and decided to trade it in for the Carnival. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with this particular model. Within the first 2 weeks, the dashboard started to come apart and we had to take it in for repairs multiple times, which was inconvenient. Additionally, we have noticed that the tires don't seem to have much traction in any weather. The button to change a song/station is also a bit confusing. We have also noticed some issues with the bumper. We opted for the rear entertainment system, but unfortunately, the LXS model has less impressive TVs. Lastly, we have some concerns about the seatbelts on the bucket seats. We have reached out to Kia corporate multiple times, but have not received a response. Overall, we are disappointed with this purchase and it has made us reconsider our loyalty to the Kia brand.

    I bought a Kia last year in 2023. Since then, I have experienced some issues with the doors, electronics, and a cracked front screen. The technician informed me that many cosmetic items are made of plastic. Although I have an extended warranty, I had to pay for the bulbs and door to be fixed last time. When I went to the dealership yesterday for the same issue, I found out that the warranty only covers the bulbs and door, not the screen. It will cost me almost $1400 to fix. If you are looking for a reliable van, I suggest considering other options.

    In July, I put down a deposit for a new 2022 Kia Carnival. Four months later, on October 27, I picked it up at Safford Kia of Fredericksburg. Unfortunately, on November 16, as I drove out of the parking lot after dropping off our daughter at school, the side door slid open by itself. It took me two hours to get the door to shut and latch properly. I drove it to Kia of Woodbridge, the closest Kia dealership, so they could take a look at it. After a couple of hours, a service technician informed me that they were able to replicate the issue and that the door didn't latch. They put in a part order, but unfortunately, there was a nationwide backorder for the part. I contacted the dealership I bought it from and left multiple messages, but I didn't receive a call back until later from the salesperson, who told me that it wasn't his fault and wanted to make sure I knew that. I also called and emailed Kia headquarters and executives, but I didn't receive any response. After a week of reaching out, I finally heard from Kia that they had escalated the issue to Jeff. Although I'm not sure who Jeff is because I haven't heard anything from him, and it certainly wasn't escalated. After another week of trying to contact them, I received a call from someone who kept telling me that she understood my concern about the safety of a brand new car that I drove with our 7-year-old daughter in, with a door that didn't secure and could just open. She kept saying that she understood, but nothing was really happening. We checked our lemon law and told Kia that we wanted them to buy the car back. Safety didn't seem to be a priority, communication was horrible, and the entire experience has been beyond disappointing. However, we are glad to report that the issue was fixed on December 15, just one day before the 30-day mark, which is the time frame for a car to be bought back by the company according to the lemon law. We are relieved that the issue was resolved and appreciate Kia's efforts to fix it.We're currently joking that any problems we have will just be escalated to Jeff. While they may not be solved, at least they're being addressed. As I sit here in Kia of Woodbridge, waiting for them to prepare a check to buy back my car for a few hundred dollars less than what I paid for it, I can't help but feel tired, sad, and disappointed. It's a rare SX version with a tow hitch, and I ordered exactly what I wanted. This entire process has been frustrating, but I'm grateful for the service department at Kia of Woodbridge who did their best to make things right, even though it wasn't their problem. Although Kia didn't seem to care about our safety or respond to our messages, I'm relieved that the car is back in their hands and I don't have to worry about any more issues. While I'm still waiting for Kia and Jeff to do what's right, I'm confident that it will happen soon since it was escalated to Jeff. Despite this experience, I'm hopeful that I'll find a better car brand in the future.

    After checking out the carnival and taking a ride, we decided to purchase a 2023 model. It's a base model, but we're thrilled with it so far. We've already put 7,000 miles on it! It's incredibly comfortable, sporty, and handles like a dream. The gas mileage isn't bad for its size, and it's very roomy inside. So far, we haven't found anything we don't like about it.     We purchased our vehicle just 3 weeks ago and embarked on a 7600 mile coast-to-coast-coast family road trip. It was a great compromise between my desire for an SUV and my wife's preference for a minivan. To put things into perspective, we had our Sienna for 15 years with over 200,000 miles, so this is a huge upgrade for us. Overall, we are very happy with the vehicle and its many great features, although there are a few minor annoyances. On the positive side, the vehicle looks really nice and has many useful features such as the many cameras and safety features. The engine is decent and we got an average of about 24 mpg with mostly highway driving. The seats are generally comfortable for long trips and it fits 4 adults and 2 teens comfortably. However, we do wish there was an AWD version. On the negative side, the touch buttons under the media center are too sensitive to accidental touches and the app cluster panel seems disorganized. The entertainment system is not great unless you use Android devices and it requires a wifi connection. It is also disappointing that there is no wireless Apple Carplay. The second row seat mechanics are poorly engineered, making it more difficult than it needs to be to get into the 3rd row. The wireless access through the app (UVO) is nice, but there is a delay in command execution, taking 1-2 minutes for the remote start to execute, lock/unlock, etc. We also wish there were more door/side storage pockets. We love the Odyssey side storage and shelves and the new Sienna's center console storage. Our major gripes are the non-logical trim decisions, such as no roof rails (only on the SX) and even for SXs with roof rails, no crossbars. We had to opt for aftermarket products. Despite these minor issues, we are very happy with our purchase and would recommend it to others.- The rear bumper could have been made wider to allow for safer stepping when reaching for rooftop cargos. It can be precarious to step on it when the liftgate is closed due to its narrow width.- The tow hitch is positioned only 6-7 inches above the ground, which has caused it to graze the streets on steep bumps a few times.Despite these shortcomings, we have been happy with the purchase. Overall, the car looks good for a minivan that feels like an SUV.

    I never thought I'd drive a minivan, but I needed the space and then Kia came out with the MPV Carnival. It's named after a circus, which I think is fitting since kids can be quite the performers! The Carnival has plenty of legroom for all passengers in the second and third rows, and the seats can slide forward or back for more or less space. It can hold up to 8 passengers, but you can remove the middle second-row seat for captain's chairs and easy access to the third row. The tech in the front is great, although I wish there was more storage space. Overall, I still love it. However, I'm a bit disappointed with the entertainment system in the second row. The car doesn't have wifi, so you can't use it unless you have a hotspot. I'm also experiencing some issues with it randomly turning off and the screen resolution being fuzzy at times. The system only has YouTube and Netflix, and I think there should be more streaming options or the ability to stream anything from my phone. A DVD player in the back would have been a great addition so kids could watch whatever they want without worrying about wifi. The ride is smooth and comfortable. From a mom's perspective, there are definitely some things that could be improved, especially considering the price point. However, I would still recommend this vehicle to other moms.

    I recently purchased the top of the line Carnival from Bridgewater Kia in Bridgewater, NJ, and while I initially had some concerns about the detailing work, those issues were resolved over a year ago. Since then, my wife and I have been very happy with the car. It's comfortable, reliable, and looks great with the black on black rims. While there were some early issues with the car, they were quickly resolved and we haven't had any problems since. Overall, we're very satisfied with our purchase.
