Common Isuzu Isuzu truck problems
Isuzu Trucks: Common Problems Based on Owner Complaints
Isuzu has been known for its reliable trucks, but there are some common problems that owners have reported. One of the most significant issues is with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system, which has caused troubles for many Isuzu truck owners.
The DPF system is designed to reduce diesel exhaust emissions, but it has caused problems for some Isuzu truck owners. The system requires the vehicle to be running at a speed of over thirty miles per hour to generate enough heat for a regeneration of the soot particles that become trapped in the diesel particulate filter. However, vehicles that run for significant distances at a lower speed, such as parking lot sweepers, have an exhaust system that is too cool to allow a regeneration. As a result, soot can build up to an excessive level, causing the DPF system to malfunction.
To address this issue, Isuzu has implemented a warning light on the dash that turns green when a regeneration is taking place. However, if the regeneration is interrupted, the automatic regeneration process suspends itself until it gets to another optimum regeneration spot. In some cases, operators may need to initiate a manual regeneration, which means the vehicle cannot be moved for about 20 minutes.
Isuzu has responded to these reported DPF system troubles by emphasizing the importance of driver education, particularly for those who operate vehicles at low speeds, such as parking lot sweepers. Ideally, the regeneration process should occur automatically, with no driver interaction needed whatsoever.
Other Common Problems
While the DPF system troubles are one of the most significant issues reported by Isuzu truck owners, there are other common problems as well. Some owners have reported issues with the engine, such as slow performance and a need for frequent maintenance.
Isuzu has also implemented a Priority Service Maintenance Program, which locks in and controls parts and labor costs for three to six years, helping to manage the cost of ownership and enhance operating efficiency.
In summary, while there are some common problems reported by Isuzu truck owners, such as issues with the DPF system and the engine, many owners praise the reliability and durability of these trucks. Isuzu has implemented several programs and initiatives to address these issues and help owners manage the cost of ownership and maintain their trucks' performance over time.
How reliable are Isuzu trucks?
Isuzu's low cost of ownership is attributed to its reliability, efficiency, and ease of repair when the need arises. Isuzu has both Genuine and FleetValue parts, its first and second line, which are designed and built to ensure your truck runs at its peak performance and stays on the road longer.
Why did they stop making Isuzu?
In the days when Isuzu sold passenger cars, they were known for focusing on the diesel-engined niche. In 1983, for instance, long before the explosion in diesel sales, diesels represented 63.4% of their passenger car production. In 2009, Isuzu abandoned the United States consumer market due to lack of sales.
Why buy Isuzu truck?
When you choose Isuzu, you can count on your work truck to be reliable, safe and being built to last. Isuzu trucks are top of the class in quality and safety measurements like visibility, maneuverability, and reliability.
Why are Isuzu trucks popular?

AFTER HAVING THE TRUCK TOWED TO THE AUTHORIZED ISUZU SERVICE CENTER THEY DETERMINED THIS WAS PART OF RECALL 10V-436 AND WAS NOT ABLE TO BE REPAIRED. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS FORCES THESE VEHICLES BACK ON THE ROAD WHEN RESOLD AS USED LEAVING THE NEW OWNER UNSUSPECTING OF THE DANGER WHEN THEY ARE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. - Date Of Incident: 2005-12-29
- Date Complaint: 2006-01-31
- VIN: JACDJ58X9Y7
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: IN DECEMBER, 2005, I NOTICED THAT MY ENGINE WAS KNOCKING. UPON ARRIVING HOME, I CHECKED THE OIL. IT WAS BONE DRY. I HAD JUST REPLACED THE OIL 4,500 MILES BEFORE, AND CHECKED THE OIL 3 WEEKS PRIOR TO THIS PROBLEM. I REPLACED THE OIL AND THOUGHT ALL WAS WELL. I WENT TO WORK THE NEXT DAY, AND STILL HAD A MINOR KNOCKING. AFTER LEAVING WORK, I WENT TO GET GAS. UPON ENTERING THE GAS STATION, MY TROOPER SHUT DOWN. WHEN I RE-STARTED THE TROOPER, THE ENGINE HAD AN EXTREME POUNDING. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. RIGHT AWAY, WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT THE ENGINE, MY MECHANIC TOLD ME I HAD BLOWN MY ENGINE. WHEN I ASKED HIM HOW HE COULD TELL BE JUST SIMPLY LISTENING TO THE ENGINE, HE HAD TOLD ME THAT HE HAS SEEN ENOUGH OF THE TROOPERS AND RODEOS TO KNOW THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. I HAD THE TROOPER TOWED TO THE LOCAL ISUZU DEALER. THEY WANTED PROOF THAT I CHANGED THE OIL IN MY TROOPER EVERY 3,000 MILES (I NEVER KEPT RECEIPTS). PLUS, THE ISUZU TROOPER OWNERS MANUAL CLEARLY STATES OIL SHOULD BE CHANGED EVERY 7,500, EXCEPT UNDER EXTREME DRIVING CONDITIONS. MY TROOPER WAS NEVER DRIVEN IN EXTREME CONDITIONS. AFTER A WEEK OR SO, THE SERVICE MANAGER OFFERED TO PAY FOR HALF OF THE COST OF A NEW ENGINE ($7,400 TOTAL COST OF NEW ENGINE). I TOLD HIM THAT I AM NOT ACCEPTING THIS OFFER, BECAUSE I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD, OR WHO ARE HAVING, THE SAME PROBLEM. PLUS, THE LOCAL ISUZU DEALER NEVER EVEN TORE THE ENGINE DOWN TO LOOK FOR THE PROBLEM, OR WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED IT. HOW CAN HE HAVE OFFERED TO PAY HALF OF THE COST OF A NEW ENGINE WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT THE INSIDE ON MY TROOPER. I'LL TELL YOU WHY, BECAUSE HE KNOWS THERE ARE, AND HAVE BEEN OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEMS WITH THESE VEHICLES. I THEN CALLED THE CONSUMER SERVICE DEPT. OF ISUZU AMERICA. THEY COULD HAVE CARED LESS WHAT MY PROBLEM WAS. SO HERE I AM WITH A 2000 ISUZU TROOPER, THAT ONLY HAS 49,000 MILES ON IT WITH A BLOWN ENGINE, AND I STILL OWE $13,000 ON THE VEHICLE. *NM
Isuzu Isuzu truck 2000
- Date Of Incident: 2005-12-07
- Date Complaint: 2006-01-14
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I PURCHASED A 2000 ISUZU TROOPER IN EARLY 2005. IT HAD 32,000 MILES ON IT. AT APPROX 49,000 MILES, WITHOUT WARNING, MY ENGINE STARTED TO KNOCK LOUDLY. I PULLED OVER, CHECKED THE OIL, AND IT WAS BONE DRY. I FILLED UP THE OIL, AND PROCEEDED HOME. THE NEXT DAY I WENT TO WORK. WHEN LEAVING WORK, I ENTERED A GAS STATION, AND THE TRUCK SHUT DOWN. UPON RE-STARTING THE TRUCK, THERE WAS A VERY, VERY LOUD KNOCKING. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY LOCAL GARAGE. THEY TOLD ME I THREW A ROD AND WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE. I THEN HAD IT TOWED TO THE LOCAL ISUZU DEALER, AND ASKED THEM WHAT THEY PLAN ON DOING ABOUT THIS. AFTER INVESTIGATION, THEY TOLD ME THE WARRANTY HAD RUN OUT MAY 2005. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED DECEMBER 05. THEY SAID THEY AGREE TO PAY FOR HALF OF THE COST OF AN ENGINE. ENGINE AND LABOR WOULD COST $7,400, SO I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $3,200. I TOLD THEM THIS WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH SINCE I KEPT EXCELLENT CARE OF THE TRUCK AND CHANGED MY OIL EVERY 4,000 - 4,500 MILES. I THEN CALLED ISUZU CUSTOMER SERVICE. THEY REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING, AND WERE VERY RUDE AND UNINTERESTED IN WHAT I HAD TO SAY. I CONTACTED THE TOYOTA DEALER WHO SOLD ME THE TROOPER, AND ASKED THEM ABOUT THE VEHICLE. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY REPLACE PARTS AND MAKE REPAIRS FOR CUSTOMERS ALL THE TIME, EVEN IF THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED OUT OF "GOOD FAITH". THEY SAID THAT IT KEEPS THE CUSTOMERS HAPPY AND KEEPS THEM RETURNING. THIS IS WHAT I HAD ASKED ISUZU TO DO, BUT AS STATED EARLIER, THEY REALLY HAD NO CONCERN FOR MY PROBLEM. I AM FINDING MANY OTHERS ON THE WEB THAT HAVE HAD, OR WHO ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR RODEO'S OR TROOPERS. TOO MANY IN FACT, THAT I AM ALMOST CERTAIN THIS HAS TO BE A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT. I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THIS BUY SEVERAL PEOPLE AS WELL. ALL I WANT IS MY TROOPER TO BE REPAIRED IN "GOOD FAITH" SO I CAN MOVE ON. HELP !!!*JB

- Summary: CURRENTLY OWN A 1998 ISUZU TROOPER. WAS PURCHASED USED FROM THE DEALER AT 82,000 MILES. CURRENTLY HAS 120,000 MILES ON THE CAR. SINCE PURCHASE VEHICLE HAS NOT HELD ITS COMPLETE CAPACITY OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. THERE ARE NO LEAKS AND OIL IS CHANGED REGULARLY WITH A FULL CAPACITY. INVESTIGATION BY ME AND OTHERS HAS SHOWN THAT THE ENGINE WAS BUILT WITH INSUFFICIENT OIL RINGS WHICH LEAD TO HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION AND HAS LED TO SEIZED MOTORS DUE TO A LACK OF WARNING. ISUZU IS AWARE OF THIS (MECHANIC TOLD ME) AND WAS NOT FIXED UNTIL THE 2000 MODEL YEAR. (PROBLEM ON 98 AND 99 MODELS. DON'T MIND ADDING OIL EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE BUT WOULD HATE TO LOOSE THE ENGINE BECAUSE THE OIL SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY IN IT'S DESIGN. *JB

- Summary: ON JUN 5, 2005, I WAS DRIVING 65 MILES AND HOUR ON INTERSTATE 90 WEST, WHEN MY 1999 ISUZU TROOPER'S ENGINE FAILED. IMMEDIATELY, BEFORE THE ENGIE STOPPED, I HEARED A RATTELING NOISE, EVERY LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD LIT UP, AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY SAFELY. I EVENTUALLY HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO DORSCHEL ISUZU IN ROCHESTER, NY, WHERE UPON COMPLETION OF A DIAGNOSTIC , FOUND THAT THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED UP. DORSCHEL THEN GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $8,000 TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE, WICH BY THE WAY, HAPPENS O BE ABOVE BLUE BOOK. I CONTACTED VISION HYUNDAI TO SEEK ASSISTANCE, AND OFFERED NO HEL TO ME WHAT SO EVER. I HAD PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH THEM FOR 72/80,000 AND WAS TOLD BY VISION'S SERVICE MANAGER, DAVE THAT MY CLAIM WOULD BE DENIED EVEN THOUGH I SHOWED PROOF OF MY LAST TWO OIL CHANGES. I SOUGHT ASSISTANCE FROM ISUZU, AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE WARRANTY EXPIRED IN 9/04 THEY WEREN'T GOING TO DO ANYTHING FOR ME, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE AWARE THAT THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE MADE IN 1999. AT THIS POINT, I AM STILL PAYING A CAR LOAN AND INSURANCE FOR A VEHICLE I CAN'T EVEN DRIVE.
