Gmc Typhoon problems
The GMC Typhoon is a high-performance SUV, produced from 1992 until 1993 by GMC. The Typhoon was based on the 1991 GMC Syclone.
Description
Like the GMC Syclone, the Typhoon is powered by a 4.3 L LB4 V6 engine with unique pistons, main caps, head gaskets, intake manifolds, fuel system and exhaust manifolds, producing 280 hp (209 kW) and 360 lb⋅ft (475 N⋅m) of torque. The engine is a modified version of the Vortec engine found in the standard Jimmy, which originally produced 190 hp (142 kW). The engine uses a Mitsubishi TD06-17C/8 cm2 turbocharger producing 14 psi (0.97 bar) of boost and a Garrett Water/Air intercooler, as well as revised intake manifolds, fuel system, exhaust manifolds, and a 48 mm (2 in) twin-bore throttle body from the 5.7 L GM Small-Block engine. The Typhoon sends power to all four wheels through a 4L60 4-speed automatic transmission and a BorgWarner 4472 (the Syclone used a BorgWarner 1372) transfer case splitting torque with 35% forward and 65% to the rear wheels. Other features include upgraded brakes, a limited-slip rear differential and sport modifications to the standard suspensions. Unlike the Syclone, the Typhoon featured an air-operated self-leveling rear suspension.
During tests by Car and Driver, the Typhoon was capable of accelerating from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 5.3 seconds and could do a quarter-mile run in 14.1 seconds at 95 mph (153 km/h). Car and Driver compared the Syclone's performance favorably to the Ferrari 348ts, Chevrolet Corvette, and Nissan 300ZX Turbo. It cost US$29,970, though the magazine criticized the plastic interior pieces.

Common Gmc Typhoon problems
The GMC Typhoon is a high-performance sports truck produced in the early 1990s, and like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the GMC Typhoon, based on complaints from owners:
- Year-Specific Issues: The 1992 GMC Typhoon has reported issues with fuel pump failure, oil pressure problems, and transmission issues.
- Complectation-Specific Issues: The interior of the GMC Typhoon can have HVAC problems, power window failure, and dashboard lights not working.
- Generation-Specific Issues: The first generation Typhoon (1992-1993) has reported issues with brake problems, differential failure, and exhaust system leaks.
- Model-Specific Issues: The Typhoon has reported issues with intake manifold leaks, fuel injector problems, and oxygen sensor failure.
- Fuel System Issues: The GMC Typhoon's fuel system can have problems with the fuel pump, which can lead to reduced engine performance, difficulty starting the vehicle, and even complete engine failure if not addressed promptly.
In addition to these common issues, some GMC Typhoon owners have reported problems with the water pump and transmission mounts. It is important to note that these issues may not be exclusive to the GMC Typhoon and may be common among other vehicles in the GMC lineup.
To avoid these issues, regular maintenance and inspection are crucial in keeping the GMC Typhoon running smoothly and avoiding costly repairs. This includes frequent oil changes, brake system maintenance, and cooling system maintenance, as well as regular inspections of the vehicle's components.
In summary, the GMC Typhoon has a number of common issues that can affect its performance and reliability. However, with proper care and attention, these issues can be identified and addressed before they become major problems.
What was so special about the GMC Typhoon?
Unlike the Syclone, the Typhoon featured an air-operated self-leveling rear suspension. During tests by Car and Driver, the Typhoon was capable of accelerating from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 5.3 seconds and could do a quarter-mile run in 14.1 seconds at 95 mph (153 km/h).
Why did they stop making the GMC Typhoon?
Reception to the Typhoon was similar to the Syclone; lasting from 1992 to 1993 before its cancellation. The termination of production is often attributed to not just its price, but also that the company in charge of modifying the S10s went out of business.
What is the difference between GMC Syclone and Typhoon?
The Syclone was quicker than the Typhoon
The Syclone weighed 3,599 pounds. The Typhoon weighed 3,822 pounds. That not-insignificant weight difference helped ensure the Syclone was a little quicker.
What is the top speed of a GMC Typhoon?
- Top Speed. 200 km/h.
- Acceleration, 0-100 km/h. 5.7 sec.
- Top Speed. 124 mph.
- Acceleration, 0-60 mph. 5.3 sec.

This is the quickest SUV ever produced and it's also extremely comfortable. This vehicle can go from 0 to 60mph in just 5 seconds, which is enough to blow away new sports cars!

This car is fast and fun, but it requires regular maintenance, including spark plug replacement every 12k. Unfortunately, many of its parts are either obsolete or expensive, or both.

This is the best car I have ever owned. It's always fun to pull up next to kids in their Trans Ams or Z28s and leave them in the dust. They usually have a funny look on their face when I beat them, since they think it's just a Blazer. It's so rare that people don't even recognize it anymore. If you come across one, you better buy it!
