Gmc Sport van problems
The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.
Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.
After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common Problems with the GMC Savana Van
One of the most common problems with the GMC Savana van is related to the transmission control valve. According to Customer Satisfaction Program N232428780, certain 2017 and 2021 GMC Savana models may have a condition where the transmission Control Valve Body Ball Check Valves can prematurely wear, which can cause them to become stuck or pass through the Control Valve Body Space Plate. If this were to occur, the driver may not be able to shift from Park to Drive or Reverse once the affected vehicle begins operation.
This issue has prompted General Motors to release a customer satisfaction program, instructing certified technicians to inspect affected units and replace the transmission Control Valve Body Spacer Plate package. This fix is estimated to take less than three hours to complete. General Motors has recommended that owners take affected vehicles to Medium Duty dealers to perform the repair, but if this isn't possible, owners may take their Savana units to servicing dealers with equipment that meets or exceeds the vehicle weight, which is also able to safely and properly lift the vehicle.
Another transmission-related issue with the GMC Savana van is a transmission fault that could impact ambulances and school buses in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation is looking into a complaint that alleges an issue with the 6L90 transmission used by 2016-2018 and 2021-2022 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana cutaway models in the U.S. A complaint filed with the NHTSA claims that impacted vehicles could experience a loss of power when shifting into drive or reverse. The complaint notes that many of the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana models impacted are used as school buses and ambulances and says that a loss of motive power could prevent ambulances from transporting patients and could force students to leave a school bus mid-route.
The Office of Defects Investigation has contacted General Motors, which identified two production runs of valve body separator plates that were incorrectly machined. The result could be excessive wear to the plastic valve body check balls that may lead to a loss of motive power. GM has identified a total of 89 vehicles impacted as ambulances and 1,961 currently being used as school buses.
In addition to transmission problems, the GMC Savana van has also had issues with final-stage manufacturers leaving unused circuit connectors or cut wires unsealed, potentially triggering erosion if they're exposed to moisture or contamination. In April 2023, approximately 150,000 models were recalled in the United States because of this issue. Impacted Express Cutaway models were manufactured between August 12, 2022 and March 27, 2023, while Savana Cutaway models were built from May 8, 2002 to March 23, 2023.
In summary, the GMC Savana van has had several common problems related to the transmission, including premature wear of transmission control valve components and transmission faults that could lead to a loss of motive power. Additionally, there have been issues with final-stage manufacturers leaving unused circuit connectors or cut wires unsealed, potentially triggering erosion if they're exposed to moisture or contamination.
