The fourth generation of the C/K series is a range of trucks that was manufactured by General Motors. Marketed by the Chevrolet and GMC brands from the 1988 to the 2002 model years, this is the final generation of the C/K model line. In a branding change, GMC adopted the GMC Sierra nameplate for all its full-size pickup trucks, leaving the C/K nomenclature exclusive to Chevrolet.

Internally codenamed the GMT400 platform, GM did not give the model line a word moniker (e.g., "Rounded-Line series" for its predecessor). After its production, the model line would informally become known by the public as the "OBS" (Old Body Style), in reference to its GMT800 successor. In starting a different tradition, the model line overlapped production with both its predecessor and successor; the model line again shared body commonality with GM medium-duty commercial trucks.

Over nearly a 14-year production run, the fourth-generation C/K was assembled by GM in multiple facilities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. After the 2000 model year, the fourth-generation C/K was discontinued and was replaced by the GMT800 platform (introduced for 1999); the C3500HD heavy-duty chassis cab model remained in production through 2002. In line with the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet subsequently adopted a singular Chevrolet Silverado nameplate for its full-size truck line (which remains in use).

Common Gmc Crew cab problems

Common Problems with GMC Crew Cab Cars:

  • Four-Wheel Drive Problems: While not specifically mentioned as a 2017 model problem, Lemon Law Car notes that GMC Sierra 4-wheel drive problems have affected several Sierra models. The most common issue is the failure of the selector switch on 4-wheel drive models, which can result in 4-wheel drive service alarms. This issue is less prevalent in the 2017 model but is still something to be aware of when purchasing a used GMC Sierra 1500.
  • Front Airbag Deployment: A significant issue for 2017 GMC Sierra owners was the front airbag deployment, which was later recalled. In some cases, airbags would not deploy under specific driving conditions, and seat belt pretensioners would not activate during a crash. This issue is not exclusive to the 2017 model and has affected several other GMC models. However, since it is under recall, airbag sensors and mechanisms will not cost extra if your vehicle meets the criteria.
  • Brake Assist Issues: The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 has been reported to have two primary issues with the braking system. First, there were problems with unintentional braking and vacuum pump that reduced power brake assist. This issue could cause the vehicle to pull over to the left or right, increasing the risk for motor vehicle crashes. The second issue is low vacuum pump levels, which limit brake assist and increase the pressure needed to come to a full stop. This can make it more challenging for owners to stop in time and prevent rear-end crashes.
  • Climate System Problems: Consumer Reports highlights various climate system problems reported by 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 owners. These issues include AC compressor failures, blower (fan) motor problems, condenser issues, evaporator problems, heater system malfunctions, and automatic climate system electrical failures. Some owners have reported that their AC would not cool, seats would blow excess heat in the back seat, and there were major vibration issues when driving at high speeds.

In conclusion, while the GMC Crew Cab cars are known for their off-road capabilities, powerful V-8 engine, and luxury interior design, they have been reported to have various problems, including transmission and engine issues, four-wheel drive problems, front airbag deployment, brake assist issues, and climate system problems. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.
