Ford Supercab problems
The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common Ford Supercab problems
The Ford Supercab, a popular model of the Ford F-150, has faced several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most prevalent issues:
- Frozen Handle Truck Recall: One of the biggest problems with 2015-2017 F-Series trucks has been a frozen door handle latch issue. The frozen handle can prevent the door from opening, which can be a significant safety concern. This issue is caused by the plugs bonding to the electrodes in the lock cylinder, making it difficult to extract the plugs when they break.
- Aluminum Hood Corrosion: During the mid-2000s, Ford received a slew of customer complaints about corroded auto parts on its new models. The problem centered on the hoods of the automaker’s 2000-2007 F-150s. Corrosion has also been an issue for fuel tank straps in some trucks. On Heritage edition 2004 F-150s, corrosion of the fuel-tank straps led to a recall of the model. The problem was causing tanks to drop off, in addition to disconnections between the tank and the fuel line.
- Airbag Deployment Issues: Another issue with mid-2000s F-150s concerned the abrupt, undesired deployment of the driver-side airbag. Drivers reported the issue on 2005-2006 models of the truck, and it eventually led to a recall that involved over 144,000 trucks. If you look to purchase a used 2005-2006 F-150, make sure that this recall was addressed.
- Window Component Failure: Drivers of 2004 and 2005 F-150s reported a problem concerning windows. The issue involved the power regulators on door-side windows, which were failing and causing window panes to drop into the doors or to become stuck or make a grinding noise.
- Loud Ticking/Knocking Noise From the Engine: Problems with the cam phaser have also been reported on these F-150s. Signs of this problem typically include sounds that resemble clicks and knocks coming from the engine. At the time the problem was being reported, Ford dealers allegedly claimed the sounds indicated nothing problematic about the engine. Consequently, drivers ignored the issue and engines failed as a result.
- Coolant Leakage: The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves on the F-250 Super Duty vehicles might leak coolant. When white smoke pours out of the tailpipe, the valves are leaking and need to be inspected. Another cause of coolant leakage is a broken thermostat bypass. The cooling system pressure may rise, leading the radiator to fail. If this occurs, the thermostat and radiator will need to be replaced.
- Liner Pitting: If the cooling system is neglected, the Super Duty diesel engines are prone to liner pitting. Air bubbles or ice develop on the engine’s water pump during cavitation, causing corrosion. Antifreeze, such as Nalcool or Caterpillar ELC, should be added to the current coolant regularly to avoid liner pitting.
- Cylinder Head Ejection Spark Plug: The threads in the spark plug hole are damaged when a spark plug is ejected. When this occurs, Ford vehicle specialists advise that the cylinder head be replaced. On the internet, a cylinder head costs about $400.
- Delamination in the Diesel Tank: Delamination occurs when minute metal and liner chips from the tank choke the diesel pump, and the blockage suffocates the engine and causes it to shut down. One option is to purchase a new tank, which may cost between $1,200 and $2,400, or repair the tank (not a long-term solution) for between $200 and $400.
- Steering Wheel Vibrates When Braking: If you find your steering wheel vibrates when you brake, bent rotors might be to blame. After an abrupt stop, brake pad material is exposed to very hot rotors and pressure, resulting in rough areas on the rotor’s surface. To save the rotor pads, which may cost up to $100, experts recommend gentle, smooth stops rather than harsh, abrupt braking while driving.
These problems can vary in severity and cost to repair. It is essential to stay informed about these common issues to ensure proper maintenance and avoid potential safety hazards.
