Based on a variant of the FCA Small Wide platform, the 500L uses Fiat's Multiair variable valve timing engine technology and monovolume cab forward architecture: a packaging concept that prioritizes passenger and cargo volume. By early 2018, production reached 500,000 units. The 500L was discontinued in the North American market after model year 2020.
The 500L derives its name from Fiat's widely known 500 models, including the original 1957 Fiat 500 and the current Fiat 500, introduced in 2007. Underscoring its increased length and overall size over other 500 variants, the suffix L denotes "large", "light" and "loft".

- Summary: CAR INTERMITTENTLY SHIFTS OUT OF GEAR INTO NEUTRAL WHEN faced with an uphill grade forcing car backwards. We have had over 5 nrear accidents involving rolling off hillsides ar onto property or into traffic behind. Car will not engage we have been desperately against a steep hill many times. Also front ABS brakes intermittently grab 1 wheel forcing car sideways at 40 mph. Also car emits rattle sound coming from lower gearbox or engine area noticeable through cab, both before and after a complete $4300 transmission rebuild. Service completed by FIAT and Alfa Romeo od Van Nuys California. This car is going to kill us. Fiat is dragging their feet. I will list the first incident below at March 18, 2023 but then many more occurred after, even after trans rebuild. This design is life-threatening. Who rebuilds a trans at under 50,000 miles??

- Summary: My car is experiencing the same issue as a previous recall T19. Does not go when foot is pressed completely on gas . Will start & only go 25mph & sound like it is stuck & will not shift. Then randomly will jerk & accelerate. Tool to local mechanic Oct 2023. went for oil change, just befor appointment started running weird and check engine light had came on,asked him to check it out. Local mechanic said reader said knock sensor. paid for part,and went for pick up. Check engine light was off, ran good for about 5 mins on way home had to turn around. Took it back now local mechanic says theres mice damage to wiring harness. estimated 3,000-5,000 total. after already paying 800 for knock sensor and oil change. Told to try & see if insurance will cover rodent damages . Insurance has towed car to Fiat dealership, now being told there is zero mice damage to my wiring harness. Replaced knock sensor now for a second time, still not the fix. Was told the Issue is unrelated to the mice & has to do with my PCM. Repair cost is more than my car is even worth at this point. Sounds just like past PCM recall issue. Mine was apparently fixed 03/23/17. Is there a way there could be another recall? I have under 70,000 miles & do not understand how this has happened.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in March of 2015 and got an amazing deal - $8000 off MSRP! It's been such a great buy for me. The turbo is really impressive - it kicks in at 3000 rpm's and it feels like a rocket! Plus, the easy access and massive headroom make it super comfortable to drive. I've put 10,000 miles on it so far and haven't had any problems. Personally, I really love the European Automatic Transmission (DCA) - it feels like a manual without the clutch. I've noticed that most new 2016 models at the dealers have an American Automatic, but I guess some people didn't like the DCA. Either way, there's plenty of trunk space and I always get great mileage. Thanks for listening!

I really don't understand the negative press reviews for this car. This is actually my second FIAT, trading up from the 500 to the 500L. I've come to the conclusion that people in this country reject things that are different or unique. The design of the 500L is ingenious - for its size, it has amazing interior volume. The ride is very comfortable and it has a great seating position, sitting higher than many crossovers. I'm not sure why the press reviews say the car is under-powered. The engine is turbocharged and - at least in mine - when I hit the pedal that car MOVES! It handles quite well and is fun to drive, even for as tall as it is. Most reviewers have highly criticized the looks of the 500L but I have only gotten nice compliments on it. With all those windows, the high seating position, and spotter mirrors on both sides, all-around visibility is amazing! FIAT has some quirky features and design elements, but I think they make the car all that more appealing. Some of the interior trim could be nicer, but most cars today are filled with hard plastics - most of the hard plastic surfaces are slightly textured, so I don't think they look cheap. I have almost 20,000 miles on mine and aside from routine maintenance, the only issue I've had was with a rattle in the back (fixed by the dealer on the first visit). FIAT stands behind their products with an impressive 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, too. On one hand, it is a shame this car doesn't sell better, but I have never been one to drive what everyone else is driving, so I like driving what I consider to be the best-kept secret out there! Do yourself a favor - ignore the press critics and focus on the reviews of people who drive these cars day in and day out.

It's great to hear that you're interested in this car! Despite some negative press, there are many people who have had wonderful experiences with it. One of the best things about this car is its size - it's just a few inches shorter than a Toyota Corolla, making it easy to park almost anywhere. Despite its compact size, it has plenty of room inside for passengers and cargo. While it may not be a sports car, it still handles well and provides a comfortable ride on most roads. I've personally had no issues with it, just regular maintenance. If you're considering buying one, be sure to look for a good deal as the bad press may have affected sales. (Last 2014 left on lot June 2015, $9k discount.) NOTE: Caps are used for easy reference of points in article. REPLACED--2003 VW Passat wagon 1.8lT. ABOUT US—This is our family car in Southern California. We’ve owned mostly German cars (BMW & MB), and my European husband was initially hesitant to buy it. This car cost half of the Subaru Outback wagon we intended on purchasing. We both have lived in Europe, so the look, size, & power of the car are not strange to us. We installed a Thule roof rack, and a Fiat garage installed trailer-hitch for our Thule hitch-mounted bike rack. We are 5'8The Trekking's fabric seats, although leather is not available on this model, are surprisingly self-regulating. They have held up well during our hot Southern California summer and now in the 'cold' weather. I don't even miss having heated seats. While the sunroof's screen on the 500L is perforated and does not fully shut out the sun when closed, it is not a deal-breaker. Additionally, roof racks are not compatible, but that is not an issue for us. Although the doors lack a 'stop' mechanism and do not open in a controlled manner when exiting the vehicle, it is not a critical flaw. The Bluetooth works well as an mp3 player, but it is not ideal for talking on the phone as the microphone picks up too much sound from the dash vent and other sources. We did experience a 'dead battery issue' due to a software update that did not take, but it was remedied by a knowledgeable FIAT/JEEP garage. It is important to find a good FIAT studio/dealer, as many negative reviews stem from issues with the dealership rather than the brand. Overall, FIAT puts out a decent product, and we are hoping to avoid any transmission problems since we have a manual.

In November 2014, we purchased a 500L Easy Rosso Perla with Red/Cementite Seats and a sunroof. I really enjoy the dual clutch transmission as it gives me a manual feel without wearing out my left knee in city traffic. The adjustability of the steering column up/down and in/out is excellent. The vehicle is mainly driven in the city, but we have also taken it on a 3-hour highway trip and found the ride to be very comfortable. With the rear seats down, I was able to fit a 55-inch flat screen TV in the box with about 1'' to spare in length and width. The 500L has daytime running lights which I have enabled, and the UConnect works well with my iPhone. We recently returned the car at the end of a 39-month lease. We had no issues with the car, just some recalls and normal maintenance. We still completely enjoy the vehicle. The primary reason for returning the vehicle was that the local Fiat Studio closed, and the next closest Studio was too far away. Otherwise, we would have bought out the lease.

We really appreciate our Fiat, but unfortunately, we have had some issues with the customer service. Our car has 8832 kilometers on it and we have noticed a rattle/knock in the front end when going over small or large bumps. When we initially purchased the car, Chrysler informed us that we could use any Chrysler dealer for service/warranty work, but when we contacted City Chrysler Corner Brook NL, they informed us that they do not service Fiat. After contacting Fiat Canada, we were advised that the nearest Fiat dealer is located 10 hours away in St. John's NL. If you are considering purchasing a Fiat, we recommend doing your research to ensure that you have a dealer nearby and that you obtain everything in writing. Unfortunately, we have decided to sell our Fiat and we will be sure to inform others in Western NL about our experience.

This car is just the right size for me and has excellent interior room. It's smaller than a CUV but still has enough space for cargo. The exterior and interior styling are unique and upscale. The tech is user-friendly and it has plenty of power, making it a fun car to drive. However, there are a few downsides to the car. The vents and cheap interior plastic can vibrate and rattle on bumpy roads, which can be annoying. Also, the Beat audio system's bass can make the plastic on the door rattle, so I usually turn it off. Additionally, the glovebox and center console can be a bit noisy if you put something in them. Finally, the car occasionally doesn't start on the first try, but it always starts on the second try.

I purchased my Fiat 500L just three weeks ago. Unfortunately, on my way to work, the car started shaking and the transmission light came on. I had to wait for Fiat to open and then have the car towed in. The team at Maxwell Supercenter has been having some difficulty repairing the car, and as a result, I have been without it for a week. While I did receive a call today, after seven days, I still don't feel entirely comfortable or safe in my Fiat. I have decided to return it. I hope that the GM, Lisa C., will be able to assist me with this process. I have been disappointed with the service I have received so far, but I am hopeful that we can come to a resolution soon.
