Chevrolet Silverado lt problems

The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common Chevrolet Silverado lt problems

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500, a beloved American pickup truck, has been known to have reliability woes despite its popularity. Here are some common problems that owners have reported, based on search results:

  • Transmission issues: Transmission problems are common in the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, often preceded by a lit check engine light. The transmission may abruptly fail while driving forward or backward, with surging and jerking also being common occurrences. These issues are more likely to happen if maintenance schedules are not kept up with.
  • Faulty A/C unit: The 2014 Silverado has been widely reported to have a faulty A/C unit that may need to be replaced around 60,000 miles. This issue has been reported more frequently than any other problem in the 2014 model year.
  • Stalling or stopping while driving: Dozens of customers have reported that the 2014 Silverado may stall or completely stop while driving, which could put the driver in danger. This issue is also present in the 2015 and 2016 models, though to a lesser extent.
  • Transmission shifting poorly: The 2015 Silverado's transmission shifts poorly, but it is less likely to fail entirely compared to the 2014 model. This issue could incur costs over $5,000 as early as 30,000 miles.
  • Surging, jerking, or experiencing a hard shift: Both the 2016 and 2017 Silverado models have a tendency to surge, jerk, or experience a hard shift while driving. The 2017 year model is worse than the 2016, with many transmission failures occurring under 20,000 miles and costing an average of $3,500 to repair.
  • Worn serpentine belt: The 2018 and 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 year models have relatively few complaints, but the reported defects are troublesome. They include a worn serpentine belt at only 12,000 miles, improper shifting, and brake failure. These problems could put the driver's life in danger if they encounter them, so it's best to avoid these year models.
  • Engine dying in heavy rain: Some owners have reported that their Silverado's engine died in heavy rain, with water getting into the intake and disabling the engine. This issue has occurred in the 2020 model year and is not covered under warranty, requiring the owner to go through insurance for a new engine.
  • Poorly designed interior: The 2020 Silverado has been criticized for its poorly designed interior, including a lack of center console storage, a blind spot mirror on the driver's side that is unnecessary and poorly placed, a faulty radio that reboots randomly, window controls that are difficult to use, and a gas filler that can damage the paint.
  • Engine and transmission problems: The 2007 Chevrolet Silverado has over 600 complaints, with many involving engine issues such as excessive fuel consumption, slower acceleration, power surge and stalling, engine noises, and faulty injectors. The transmission also has problems, with clunking rear axle, vibrations, noises, and gear fluid leaks being reported. Additionally, the electrical system, drivetrain, paint, brakes, and AC have all been reported as problematic in this model year.

These are just a few of the common problems that owners have reported with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. It's important to do thorough research and consider these issues when purchasing a used Silverado.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-10
  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-10
  • VIN: 3GCUKREH7JG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Less than 33,000 miles the transmission thermostat cause the transmission to overheat. The dealership replaced thermostat and fluids. Then less than 100,000 miles same scenario and transmission goes out. Before it went out it had hard shifting and the obvious shutter at low speeds. Into my second transmission and same thing again!

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08
  • Date Complaint: 2023-10-02
  • VIN: 1GCVKREC1JZ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Since I purchase my 18 Silverado the transmission has ALWAYS had a shift lag. On interstate especially it has become dangerous. I’ve almost been rear ended a few times bc it won’t shift properly. Even with the proper lane change habits the lag and uneven shifting has almost got me killed. Early on when I got my truck (est 2019) a dealer replaced some of the lifters in my engine. I spent over $40k and have even had to replace stereo because it died. I’m disabled I can’t afford to have major repairs while still making payments. Someone needs to hold Chevrolet responsible. I’ve read enough comments from people who have one and their complaints are the same. Is anyone looking into this?

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-01
  • Date Complaint: 2023-10-02
  • VIN: 3GCPCREC0JG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Since purchasing the vehicle in April of 2021, there have been significant issues with the audio system. This was noticed before the first payment was ever made. We had a “Act of God” claim made on the car for a tree falling on the windshield around this time. It was mentioned to the collision center at the time, but it was dismissed. The display will not work, gps system fails, it continuously changes settings and functions, etc. I can see where you would not consider this a safety issue, but I can argue otherwise and effectively, and would be happy to do so. This is a manufacturer issue. I have been made aware by several aftermarket companies that they have had to replace many of these components for similar issues, the dealership where we bought our vehicle literally told me that if I replaced it factory brand that I would have the same issue later down the road, and many acquaintances that have had to replace their audio systems for once again similar issues. This is just in one general location. If there are this many issues with one piece of equipment, there is absolutely no doubt that there should be a recall placed on these models. We purchase vehicles with the expectation that they will work. It is asinine and unethical to know of an issue and not correct it accordingly. We have purchased many Chevrolets in previous years, with an issue this persistent and without correction this may be the last Chevrolet we buy, which is a shame since it is an American company.
