The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Regal served as the Buick counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.

Originally introduced as a personal luxury coupe, the Regal was later expanded to a full model line. To showcase its success in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick introduced the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. During the 1990s, while the four-door sedan superseded the two-door coupe entirely, forced-induction engines made their return, with superchargers replacing turbochargers.

For 1999, the Buick Regal inaugurated the sale of GM vehicles in the Chinese market, with the 1997 design lasting through 2008. Following the 2004 model year, Buick retired the nameplate in North America, with the Regal replaced by the Buick LaCrosse.

For 2008, Opel introduced the Opel Insignia as its largest sedan, with Buick rebranding the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market. For 2011, GM reintroduced the Regal to North America, rebranding the Insignia sedan for North America. For 2018, Buick introduced the second-generation Opel Insignia, sourcing all production from Germany; alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon in 22 years.

After 2020, as the division shifted away from car model lines, Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America.

Common Buick Regal tourx problems

The Buick Regal TourX has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues span across different model years and are related to various aspects of the car.

  • Air Conditioner Hose: A faulty air conditioner hose was reported in the 2019 Regal TourX, indicating potential issues with the car's cooling system.
  • Engine Light: The "service engine soon" light has been reported to turn on in the 2018 Regal TourX, suggesting possible engine problems or malfunctions.
  • Roadside Tire Repair: Issues with roadside tire repair have been reported in the 2018 Regal TourX, which may point to problems with the car's tires or wheels.
  • Interior and HVAC Problems: Complaints about the interior and HVAC system have also been reported. For instance, the power distribution module needed to be replaced in a 2018 Regal TourX, and some owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the car's interior quality.

It is important to note that these issues do not necessarily affect every Buick Regal TourX and may vary depending on the specific model year and individual vehicle. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

Why was the Buick Regal TourX discontinued?

However, almost everyone agrees that the market shifting to more SUV-heavy demand had the greatest impact on the Regal's discontinuation. In 2019, Buick reported that SUVs accounted for 90% of sales.

What is the ride quality of the Buick Regal TourX?

Comfort is a Buick specialty, and the TourX is no different. But this isn't a Buick boat ride of yesteryear. It is a buttoned-down and quiet ride that, despite the TourX's impressive handling capability, still delivers trademark Buick ride comfort. But there's a bit more wind noise than we'd expect.

Is the Buick Regal a reliable car?

According to carparts.com, the Buick Regal is generally reliable, like many midsize sedans. Out of 34 rated sedans, the Buick Regal is ranked 13th for reliability. In other words, it's about as reliable on average as many other sedans of its type.

How many miles per gallon does a Buick Regal TourX get?

21/29 mpg city/highway

  • VIN: W04GV8SX8J1
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: Rear camera and cross traffic warning system malfunctions randomly, working less than half the time. When the vehicle is put in reverse the system and camera often do not work and issue a notice that it needs serviced. On several occasions it did not warn me of a person behind my vehicle or another vehicle behind me. I have avoided accidents but the system is not working. I have been reading about it and it is common among this vehicle, many complaining that this is the worst rear collision camera on a car. The screen is just black, sometimes with grid lines and sometimes without. On the rare occasion the camera turns on the grid lines often disappear although they are not turned off.

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-28
  • VIN: W04GV8SX8L1
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: Ever since we purchased the vehicle new in 2020 we had an issue with intermittent mulfunction of the parking and cross traffic alerts indicators. The backup camera screen often fails to indicate whether there is cross traffic and from which side. The issue is present about 8/10 times. While the vehicle was under warranty we took it multiple times to two GM dealerships. Technicians updated the vehicle software but the issue remained. It is now going on 4th year that we don't know whether a parking sensor is beeping from our angled driveway or if there is a vehicle approaching from either (and which side!?) of our street, rendering these optional safety feature unreliable. In addition to documenting the issue when visiting the dealerships I also extensively documented the issue as it occurred by photographing the alert system and milage odometer in the same photo frame. One such recent photo is attached. There is a vehicle approaching but the visual indicator is absent. Despite more than ample patience with GM the company inaction on this safety problem remains.

I have contacted both the Dealership and Manufacturer (Buick) current Case # 9-10190079245 twice and Buick (Corporate) is trying to contact the Key GM Buick Dealership to confirm the Recall work has been done and if done, then remove the still pending Recall notice that is still showing the Recall still needs to be done.

When we pulled over to see what it was, the front passenger’s side seat belt buckle release no longer worked but the seat belt came out without resistance. It has not worked since. The dealer has confirmed the issue but says the part is back ordered without estimated delivery date. By the way, I have looked for parts in junkyards. I have found junk yards with TourXes but not this part as it has already been sold. I have the part if you want to inspect it.

We recently leased a 2018 Buick Tour X and noticed a few issues with the vehicle after taking delivery. The driver side mirror was the wrong color, the backup grid wasn't staying on, and a piece of the trim on the rear quarter panel was loose. Although it took the dealership a month to get the new mirror in the right color, they were able to fix the trim. However, they were unable to determine the cause of the backup grid problem despite consulting with a GM tech. We also experienced a loud squealing noise coming from under the hood, which turned out to be a loose positive electrical cable going to the fuse block. The dealership fixed this issue promptly. Unfortunately, we still haven't received a patch for the backup grid problem, but the dealership has assured us that GM tech is working on it and it should be resolved soon. We also had to return to the dealership for a grinding noise coming from the front end under braking, which was caused by both of the lower control arms needing to be replaced. Although we had to wait another month for parts, the dealership was able to fix the issue. We appreciate the dealership's efforts to address these issues and hope that the backup grid problem will be resolved soon.

I had the pleasure of driving the Opel Tourx in Europe as my company car for several months and was thoroughly impressed with its quality, performance, and quietness. When I learned that it would be available in the US, I eagerly ordered one with every option. Unfortunately, upon receiving the car, I experienced some issues such as a loose door panel, a tailgate sensor hanging down, and a noisy cabin. However, the dealership was quick to address these issues and had the car for a week to correct them. Although the cabin noise level was still not to my liking, the dealership and Buick customer service assured me that it was within the normal range. While I ultimately decided to purchase a different vehicle with a quieter cabin, I appreciate the efforts of the dealership to address my concerns. I have no doubt that GM is committed to producing high-quality vehicles and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

There is a known issue with the 8 Speed transmission, which has resulted in a class action lawsuit. Despite having less than 4000 miles on my car, I have experienced slipping and difficulty shifting between gears. I reported the issue to the dealer a month ago, but unfortunately, the problem has persisted and even worsened. As a result, I do not feel safe driving this car and would not recommend it to others. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This car may not be for everyone, but if you consider how you use your vehicle, the TourX probably checks most of the boxes. It looks great, is well-powered, rides quietly and smoothly, and has a really nice interior. It offers plenty of room, although the ground clearance is not great. However, few people really need the height of an Outback. I love the Audi Allroad, but I won't pay the money for the purchase and repairs. To my eye, this car looks much better and is nearly as good for much less money. I suspect most people who pass this car by do so because of their emotions. This is an amazing car that will always be a niche vehicle because people prefer the cool SUV over the uncool wagon. I think that's crazy. I guess it just means I'll have one of the few on the road. If you're in the market, at least give it a try. I absolutely love it.

The TourX is exactly what you're looking for! It's a European-based AWD wagon that offers excellent value, great styling, a strong engine, very good MPG, a smooth transmission, a big interior, a quiet ride, excellent handling, and lots of features. You've owned several other cars in the past, including an unreliable Audi Allroad, several mundane and common Subarus, and two Lincoln SUVs that were okay but still not as nice overall as the TourX. I'm glad to hear that the local Buick dealer was exemplary in terms of your purchase. It's unfortunate that the TourX lacks ventilated (cooled) seats, has limited interior (front row) storage, and doesn't allow you to turn off the 'automatic engine stop/start', but I'm happy to hear that you still love the car despite these shortcomings. It's a shame that Buick has discontinued this model, as it's a big mistake in my view!

40000 mile update: The car still runs great and is super reliable. We get compliments on its looks weekly. We did have our first issue with the kick to open tailgate feature, but it was fixed under warranty. At the 30000 mile update, we had zero issues with the car. It looks great, runs great, and we've never had a car where so many people stop and ask what it is and say how much they like it. It's a shame Buick didn't make more of an effort to sell these. Overall, it's a great car with high gas mileage, tons of cargo space, a comfortable ride, and a nice interior. It performs super well in the winter - we live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It has plenty of power and even has Apple CarPlay. Plus, it's easy to wash and load things onto the carrier without needing a step ladder. We get approached every week by someone who sees it in a parking lot and says, 'Wow - that is a great looking car' and 'I had no idea Buick made a car like that'. We have a bright red 2019 with Essence Trim and have put 6000 miles on it with ZERO issues. It's a shame that Buick has given up on these.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Buick Tour X! It sounds like you had a great experience on your road trip to Waco, Texas. With an average of 30 mpg and a comfortable ride, it's no wonder you're still enjoying it after 10 weeks and 5400 miles. The GPS system also sounds like a great feature, helping you navigate around any roadblocks and saving you time and frustration. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I recently purchased a new Regal AWD and I am thoroughly impressed! The adaptive cruise control is fantastic and the cargo space is incredibly spacious. What impresses me the most is the great gas mileage, especially since I drive 50 miles a day. I have previously owned a 2.0 turbo and have always loved its performance and handling ability. Overall, I have nothing but good things to say about this car. When comparing the price and gas mileage to other SUVs on the market, it's clear that this car is a great value. Plus, it's not your grandfather's wagon! Thank you for considering this fantastic auto.
