G70 is the internal designation for the seventh generation of the BMW 7 Series, a range of luxury cars produced by the German luxury vehicle manufacturer BMW since July 2022.

Introduced in April 2022, 7 Series and i7 are the respective designations for BMW's internal combustion and battery electric full-size luxury flagship models. BMW had unveiled the model on 20 April 2022 during the nameplate's 45th anniversary. Sold as a 2023 model, it is longer than its predecessor model. This model offers petrol and diesel models, come standard with a 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain; a plug-in hybrid system is available. Additionally, this model is also the first 7 Series offer a mild hybrid powertrain. The seventh-generation BMW 7 Series is often collectively referred to as the G70.

The G70 commenced production on 1 July 2022, exactly seven years after the previous model. The i7 is the first 7 Series to offer a fully electric powertrain, which shares powertrains with the smaller G60 i5. Both 7 Series and i7 offer optional rear- or all-wheel drive drivetrains. The V12 model is no longer offered, instead gets replaced by the M760e plug-in hybrid.

Common Bmw I7 problems

The BMW i7, an all-electric variant of the BMW 7 Series, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the high voltage battery, which has a known manufacturing defect that can lead to battery failure and potential fire risks. This defect resulted in BMW announcing a recall for all i7 models manufactured between 5th July 2021 and 8th July 2022. If you're experiencing battery problems, it may not necessarily be related to this recall, and a trained mechanic may need to inspect and repair it.

Another common problem with the BMW i7 is related to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). A small number of i7 models manufactured in 2023 have been recalled due to an issue with the ECU, where a programming defect prevents the unit from transmitting the vehicle's location information to emergency responders. BMW has announced a recall for affected vehicles to reprogram the software.

The BMW i7's reliability is still uncertain due to its recent release, as it has not yet been featured in the What Car? Reliability survey or Euro NCAP’s safety testing. However, BMW as a manufacturer ranks 13th out of 32 brands in the 2022 What Car? Reliability survey, which is a promising sign for the vehicle.

A review of the BMW i7 xDrive60 highlights some concerns about long-term reliability, despite the car's impressive features and performance. The reviewer notes that the car's systems, while not causing significant issues during the test drive, raise questions about its reliability over time.

Some owners have reported various build quality issues with their i7s, including ongoing problems with esim and connectivity, automatic door function and ventilation control issues, spotty Spotify app connectivity, poor theatre screen connectivity, poor sound and air pollution insulation, excessive wind noise from side mirrors, cabin noise from the rear sides, a rear seatbelt buckle cutting into the rear armrest, suspension not as adaptive as claimed, discoloration of the rubber seals around the rear doors, rear mirror vibration with base from the speakers, and rattling noises on the outside of the car when the speakers are turned up slightly.

In summary, the BMW i7 has faced several common problems, primarily related to the battery and ECU. While the vehicle's long-term reliability remains uncertain, BMW's reputation for reliability and the car's impressive features and performance make it a compelling choice in the luxury electric vehicle market.
