Toyota Yaris ia problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Yaris (Japanese: トヨタ・ヤリス, Hepburn: Toyota Yarisu) is a supermini/subcompact car sold by Toyota since 1999, replacing the Starlet and Tercel.

Up to 2019, Toyota had used the Yaris nameplate on export versions of various Japanese-market models, with some markets receiving the same vehicles under the Toyota Echo name through 2005. Starting in 2020, the Yaris nameplate began to be used in Japan, which replaced the Vitz nameplate.

The Yaris nameplate has also been applied to other vehicles. From 1999 to 2005, the nameplate had been used for the Yaris Verso mini MPV sold in Europe, where it was known in Japan as the FunCargo. Since 2020, the nameplate has also been used for the subcompact crossover SUV offering called Yaris Cross. In North America, most Yaris sedan models sold from 2015 to 2020 and Yaris hatchbacks sold from 2019 until 2020 were restyled versions of the Mazda2, produced and developed by Mazda.

In 2020, Toyota introduced the GR Yaris, which is a three-door performance-oriented variant of the XP210 series Yaris using the Gazoo Racing branding. It is built as a homologation model for the FIA World Rally Championship.

The name "Yaris" is derived from "Charis", the singular form of Charites, the Greek goddesses of charm and beauty. As of March 2020, the Yaris has sold 8.71 million units worldwide.

Gradually the steering began to bind again and on 18 Dec 2023 I asked the dealer to check the steering and they could not duplicate the problem during a test drive.

  • Date Complaint: 2022-10-13
  • VIN: 3MYDLBYV7HY
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: At about 25,000 miles, my vehicle steering began to lightly bind when driving on a straight road at highway speed. Although the steering wheel could be turned with some minor extra effort, the experience was troubling. At 29,880 miles I took my vehicle to the local dealer and asked to have the steering checked. The dealer was not able to duplicate the problem and they did not charge me. The problem gradually worsened until 41,020 miles when I returned to the dealer with the same issue. This time they found the steering shaft assembly was defective and said that it was a dangerous situation. I asked them to fix the problem which they did promptly. I have service records from both visits.

  • VIN: 3MYDLBYV5HY
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The car had precisely 51,255 miles. I took it in for a 50K regular service and asked them to run a diagnostic because there was a grinding sound, so I asked them to check the transmission fluid and run an OBD diagnostic. Between my last regular service and the current service, the TRANSMISSION broke; the car is unsafe to drive at this point. The transmission could have stopped on the highway since I do not work locally. This issue happened suddenly. I took the first appointment I could get, and I am without a vehicle today. I will never feel safe in this car again. I must express my absolute disappointment in my 2017 Toyota Yaris IA with 51,255 miles. I just paid off this vehicle early through Toyota Financial. I know a car is a machine, but as a Toyota, it should not have this issue with just a little over 51K miles. I feel like Toyota sold me a lemon, and once they fix it, there will be some refurbished parts and some new neither makes me feel comfortable with the vehicle anymore. NOTE: the brakes went up before the first scheduled maintenance. This car appears to be a riding deathtrap! No wonder Toyota stopped manufacturing it, from what I have discovered. Thank GOD for my warranty.

  • Summary: I’m reporting a vehicle safety problem. My 2018 Toyota Yaris IA just had a mileage of 823 miles and was within the warranty time and had a brake system problem caused by the Toyota car quality problem. On August 22 (Sunday), 2021 about 1:00 pm I, with my wife, was going to drive my 2018 Toyota Yaris IA to my daughter’s house to see our five grandchildren as we did since April when we had covid 19 vaccine. When I started the car in my house parking lot, I was surprised to find several indicators of the brake system malfunction were on the car’s computer screen. Not only did the indicators still exist in the screen, I felt the car was shaking when I was driving about 30 feet. I immediately returned back to my house parking lot and found a new problem that the air conditioning didn’t work either. I decided not to drive this car. The next day, August 23 about 7:00 am, I drove to Oakton Sonoco Auto Service Center. There, Jim, the manager, found the same indicators of the brake system malfunction, he at once told me, “Your car just has 800 mileages and is under warranty. You should drive to the Toyota dealer immediately.” Then I drove to Ourisman Fairfax Toyota at about 7:25 am and told Mr. Carroll Hyman about the car problems. At about 4:00 pm he called me and said, “Mice bit and broke the wires to damage the wire system. Your car’s repairing can not have the warranty.” I asked, “Did you see the mice?” He answered, “Yes, the mice were in the wires close to the engine”. He didn’t mention whether the mice were alive or dead. If the mice were alive when he saw them, how could the mice be still there after about 18 hours including 20 minutes suffering heat, noise and vibration created by the working engine? If the mice were dead when he saw them, while I was driving several miles , the engine chatter and inertia of the moving body of the car already threw away dead mice into the road, how could he see them still there? His saying contradicts the facts.

  • Summary: Our Toyota Yaris was involved in front end accident on 11/4/21; no airbags deployed as a result of the accident. The car was declared a total loss (TL) by USAA. Calliber Collision (775-353-4400) in Sparks, NV currently has the car. I requested they complete a diagnostic report on the airbags (to confirm the car has airbags, if they should've deployed, etc.) but they won't run the diagnostic report since USAA declared it a TL. (USAA confirmed this is the case - no diagnostic report will be done since the car is a TL...even when I requested the report.) Our daughter's safety was put at risk since the car's airbags did not deploy. The car had no warning messages, etc prior to the accident on 11/4/21.

  • Date Complaint: 2021-09-14
  • VIN: 3MYDLBYV9HY
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have found that the TCS/DSC control malfunctions occasionally and can lead to lose of power to the wheels right when it is necessary to avoid an accident. The worst time was when it was snowing out and even if I floored it the wheels did not turn. Once I shut off the TCS/DSC control I regained control and was able to avoid an accident. Originally I had thought that the occasional hesitation when slowing to make a turn and then suddenly accelerating only to find the car bogged down was not from the transmission but from the TCS/DSC control. Ever since the car was new I have had this problem of hesitation when turning from a slowing down to near stop then accelerating only to find that the car will not accelerate for a few seconds. I have now tried to deactivate the TCS/DSC control to avoid this problem.

I've been a Toyota owner my entire life. Recently, I purchased the Yaris IA for my daily commute to work. While it is economic on gas, I found it to be too small and not suitable for the harsh winters we experience here in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, I was involved in an accident where a careless driver hit me from behind. The damage was extensive, and State Farm totalled the vehicle at $11,000. Thankfully, I wasn't injured, but it made me realize the importance of wearing seat belts in this car. Additionally, I found the windshield visibility to be poor and the seats uncomfortable. Anyway, I've decided to upgrade to a Camry.

There is only one obstacle between the vehicle and myself - Mazda has a hand in it. I have owned and driven one, but unfortunately, I will never sit in another Mazda in this lifetime. In my experience, Mazda has proven to be an unreliable vehicle, showing signs of critical wear and tear around 40k miles, such as engine and transmission issues. I have decided to explore other options for my future vehicles. Thank you for considering my feedback.

The car is a great option for first-time buyers as it comes with standard add-ons such as Bluetooth, a touch screen, and USB ports. However, it is worth noting that the car has a Ford Fiesta engine, which may not be to everyone's liking. When I purchased this car, I was expecting the reliability of a Toyota, but it turned out to have a Ford engine. Therefore, I would recommend this car only as a stepping stone to finance something better in the future.

This car has some issues that need to be addressed. The computer freezes in wet weather or when items are placed in the front seat, and the phone cannot be charged in the car without causing it to enter wake mode. Additionally, the car experiences high revs and clunky gear changes. These issues are concerning and require attention.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with you. I test drove a car recently that I absolutely loved - the Yaris iA. It's sold by Toyota, but it's actually a Mazda2 and drives like a dream. Unfortunately, my wife and I needed a larger car so we ended up getting a Mazda6 instead. However, I'm definitely keeping the Yaris iA in mind for when we need to replace our second car in a couple of years. I had such a great time driving it earlier this year and I highly recommend giving it a try!

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2007 Yaris sedan. It's been such a reliable car for me, with over 231,000 miles and I've never had to take it to the shop for repairs. Plus, it was such a great deal at under $15,000 when I bought it new. I've found that keeping up with regular Toyota Care maintenance has been the key to keeping it running smoothly. Even after all these miles, I still get an impressive 38-40 mpg! If I ever need to replace it, you can bet my next car will be another Yaris.

  4. Ron Stehr 2024-06-25

I really appreciate the pricing and the better-than-rated gas mileage of this car. It's definitely a solid step up from the Hyundai Accent Hatchback I drove for 10 years. Although it's not a hatchback, the fold-down back seats are still quite convenient. The 'entertainment center' is very impressive, but I'm still getting used to it after four weeks. I'm having a bit of trouble finding my favorite radio station, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it soon. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to connect to Bluetooth yet, which is a bit frustrating since I'd love to listen to Pandora or various podcasts. It's a shame that the car doesn't have any AV-in ports. Overall, I'm very happy with my sensible choice and I feel like I got a great value. Although I do miss having a hatchback, I'm still very satisfied with my purchase.

The Toyota Yaris IA is a lovely compact car. I adore its look and style. As a mother, I do wish there was a bit more room between the front and back seats, as well as more space from the seats to the doors. Nevertheless, it's a delightful ride overall. Although I'm not yet accustomed to it, the push start button is pretty cool, and the camera comes on when you're backing up to see others around you. I purchased this car at Riverview Toyota in Mesa, AZ. Milo, an awesome gentleman, took me around to look at cars. He was also kind enough to entertain my little one while completing the paperwork. Milo is a great guy who knows how to get things done quickly. Thanks, Milo!! I enjoyed this location as they have play areas for the kids, which is a necessity when you have to be there for a few hours to get everything done.
