Common Toyota Grand highlander problems
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the main issues is the transmission, where some owners have experienced hard jerking intermittently when shifting gears on a slow acceleration between 20-35 mph. This issue also occurs when slowing down to accommodate for slowing traffic and gassing to increase speed again, with a hard shifting sensation as if the clutch or gear is slipping and restarting.
Another problem is related to the safety of the vehicle. The Grand Highlander failed to secure either the Top Safety Pick award or the second-tier Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in recent testing
There have also been concerns about the power and fuel efficiency of the Grand Highlander. Some owners have reported that the hybrid version of the vehicle has a significant power difference compared to the non-hybrid version, with the hybrid model feeling strained while trying to merge onto a highway and the engine becoming louder. The fuel efficiency of the hybrid model has also been questioned, with some owners reporting a range of only around 350-380 miles on a full tank, despite getting 24-26 mpg.
The interior of the Grand Highlander has also been a subject of criticism. While the interior is spacious and offers excellent cargo space, some owners have noted that the interior materials are better than an average Toyota but do not look upscale for the money they paid. The central console is huge, but the brake feels different due to the regenerative braking, which might take some time to get used to.
Lastly, there have been issues with the media and MID in the Grand Highlander. Some owners have reported that the wireless CarPlay connectivity is not predictable, especially when adding another phone, while the outside mirrors are not dimmable, and the ambient lighting is basic.
It's important to note that these issues may not affect all Grand Highlander owners, and some may not consider them significant problems. However, these are common complaints that potential buyers should be aware of before purchasing the vehicle.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: 5TDADAB51RS
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Specifically the model: 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid Max. immediately new off the dealer lot when driving between 0-40mph, there is a transmission issue. In real life situation of stop and go, and needing to accelerate after making a right turn out of a driveway or stop sign on to flowing traffic, often times it feels as if the gear is shifting too high or skipping causing the car to lose power/ rpm and the vehicle chugs, before skipping back to the correct gearing and accelarating. I'm not sure how to describe it but I feel it is a safety risk especially if there are cars coming behind you. I have taken this into Hamer Toyota 2 times, but they can't seem to recreate the issue. However, my wife goes through this almost every day during her commute to and from work. Imagine driving a manual transmission and accelerating on 1st or 2nd gear, and all of a sudden the gear shifts to 4th or 5th gear, causing loss of power or rpm and due to natural instinct of depressing the accelerator further for power and the gear now shifting back and clutching grabbing at 1st or 2nd gear with the accelerator depressed further down than the beginning. This causes a jerking motion of our body in the car, because the car loses power, the all of sudden jerks back into power. I have attached URLs to people complaining about this besides myself. I'm seeing that toyota released a TBS to update software, but it seems its not readily available every time I call, or they need to recreate this before anything is done. I think this is a big safety concern and eventually cause accidents by getting rear ended. I'm sure other drivers think we can't drive because of not being able to speed up then rocketing forward. help! - Summary: Since purchasing this vehicle when I have driven the vehicle and come home the vehicle smells of gas vapor/fumes. It's so bad the entire garage will fill with the vapor. Im afraid the garage will explode. I have to leave the vehicle parked outside for several hours until the smell is gone. This is a known issue for this car as others have complained about the same thing. Dealership has confirmed it is a known problem. They tried o tell me the first time I took it in that it was due to extreme heat in Las Vegas. I explained that our other vehicle and our friends vehicles don't do this and that is merely an excuse. After researching online I found that several other others in other states have the dame issue. When I recently took the vehicle in for software/radio issue as well as the gas vapor they did confirm it is a known issue. This is a safety issue as it could cause an explosion in small spaces where parked. We have an air conditioner for our garage but even at that it's extremely dangerous. This has happened on several occasions. Most recent is listed below.

- Summary: I live in Arizona and the car has bad gas smell after drive a while(usually between 10-30 minutes) in a hot day (usually afternoon). I took the car to dealership and they replicated the issue and the dealership said Toyota told them it’s due to excessive heat and told us to use better quality gas which we are already getting gas from Chevron and Costco. Seems this is known problem because I saw other grand Highlander owners complained the same issue but Toyota is not doing anything to fix it. They can’t blame on the heat since they are selling the vehicles in AZ/NV. After drive the vehicle during a hot day, park the car in garage and the garage smells like gasoline.

- Summary: My vehicle is part of the recall for the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander. I have contacted Toyota due to vehicle no longer being considered safe should I be involved in an accident. They advised there is currently no fix for the recall and have no estimated timeframe as to when a fix will become available. I have requested different options to remedy the issue and they are unable to work with me with any reasonable accommodation requests to get me into a safer vehicle until a fix is available. They advised that this is a global recall where millions are affected and they are unable to make accommodations for that many people so we all have to stay put with our current vehicle even though they are shown to be unsafe in accidents. This vehicle was purchased as our family commuter car and we currently have my 4 year old sons dr appts which are 3 hours away that we have to commute to multiple times a week and I do not feel safe traveling with my family in this death trap. Toyotas response to this recall has been less than satisfactory and they are proving to have no concern for the unsafe conditions their consumers are being put in on a daily basis. As a consumer I am paying for a safe and reliable vehicle which I am not receiving, Toyota should be held accountable it should not be the consumers who are left to pay the price possibly with their life. I've been the owner of a 2024 Grand Highlander for 3 months now. Unfortunately, I have yet to receive a second key and the digital key has been unreliable at times, requiring the key fob to be placed on the start button. I have also experienced the temporary loss of the single key fob twice. The hood vibrates and worsens with road surface, which can be quite annoying. However, I believe that a pressure crease to strengthen it would solve this issue. The brakes have too much travel and are somewhat soft, and the bottom of the door card vibrates and worsens depending on the road surface. The center display has a cloud across the top and needs to be looked at by a dealer. Additionally, I find the fake wood trim to be cheap and the use of technology, dash, infotainment, and mirror to be very difficult to comprehend. The engine noise is also unlike my previous 3 Toyotas. The manuals are lengthy and confusing, requiring me to look at subject matter in more than one place. When comparing this car to my previous 3 Toyotas, I struggled between a 2 and 3 star rating, whereas I would give my previous Toyotas a 4. However, after accruing over 5600 miles on this Platinum model, most of which were from trips, I have found that the mpg is over 24 and bounces over 25 even 26 depending on circumstances. The ride and handling are good, but there is a little sway in quick maneuvers, probably due to the weight/suspension. The lane tracing is very good, but it takes a bit of getting used to. The heated and cooled seats are great, and the performance is okay but not as good or smooth as my 2016 Highlander V6. The hood continues to vibrate, and the assistive cruise can be a little too active, making it cumbersome to get to and use the 'normal' cruise. The infotainment screen still has the top fog only in GPS or directions mode, and a technician investigated and said it's like that on new GH and other models. Unfortunately, I still have not received a second key fob despite numerous calls to Toyota. However, I will upgrade my rating to a 4 as I believe that overall, this car is a good choice. It's not a 5 like my 2016 Highlander Limited, but it's still a great car.

I recently traded in my 2019 Highlander for the Grand Highlander XLE. As a long-time Toyota customer and owner of several Highlanders, I was not a fan of the 2020 Highlander redesign and decided to wait for the GH. Before Covid, I was constantly on the road for work and usually replaced my car every 3 years. Toyotas, especially the Highlander, have great resale value that is unmatched. The 2019 model was an outstanding car. The GH is a tough car to find and most are sold at MSRP. I was specifically looking for a black XLE and was planning to waitlist through my dealer. I test drove the new CX-90 and really liked it, enough to negotiate a deal on one. It's an outstanding vehicle with a fantastic motor, but I haven't seen many on the road. I had made a deal on a CX-90 and was on my way to complete the purchase when I stopped at another Toyota dealer. They had just put out the GH I was looking for, and I was pleasantly surprised. I had my title and checkbook, an extra set of keys for my old car, and was ready to make a deal. I asked them to match the best trade-in value I received (CarMax gave me the highest number). After some back and forth, I got the price I wanted and a discount off MSRP. The GH was $4k more than the Mazda, but I know I'll easily recoup that when I sell it. The Mazda performance is great, but my concern was resale value, which won't be on par with Toyota. Plus, unless you buy the top trim, there is no XM radio (a feature that I want). The GH is very comfortable, probably the most comfortable seats I've ever had. The styling is nice, if a bit bland. The 2.4 turbo has similar acceleration to the old V6, but the sound reminds you it's a turbo 4. Around town, the engine is quiet and performs fine. Fuel economy has been similar to the old V6.It's really quiet inside, thanks to the thick carpet and acoustic glass on all windows. I love the XLE sound system. It's great that the passenger seat has full 6-way power. The cargo and third row are huge - this is almost a full-size SUV. If you're considering the Pilot, CX-90, Lexus RX, or upcoming TX (which is a rebadged Grand Highlander), I highly recommend checking out the GH if you can find one. I'm very happy with my purchase so far, with 1,100 miles on the clock.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Grand Highlander! It's great to hear that you haven't had any issues even after driving over 5000 miles. The car is really comfortable and has plenty of storage space, even with the 3rd row up. I understand that it can be frustrating when the system doesn't connect to the right phone based on who is in the car and it doesn't switch between the driver's profiles. Sometimes, too much technology can be overwhelming. Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

Our family is growing and a couple of years ago, I purchased a brand new SUV from Mazda. Unfortunately, I experienced several issues with the car, which made me feel unsafe, especially with a toddler and a new baby on the way. That's why I decided to look for a more reliable vehicle. I came across the Grand Highlander and fell in love with it. This vehicle is not only reliable and safe, but also incredibly spacious. It provides us with all the extra space we need, and I can still drive it comfortably. The interior is roomy, and I can easily fit my mother-in-law's walker and my toddler's stroller in the trunk. The Grand Highlander looks amazing and has a great build, which is why I receive a lot of compliments on it.

The inside could be better. However, I appreciate the effort put into the removable pads inside of the door handles and the flap behind the steering wheel. As a 'Limited' version, I had higher expectations, but overall it is a nice vehicle. Thank you for your hard work!

Be cautious when considering purchasing a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander. My recent experience with North Park Toyota was not ideal. After purchasing a brand new 2024 limited Toyota Grand Highlander, the check engine light turned on and multiple warning messages appeared within a week of owning the car. Although we brought the car to the North Park Toyota service center, they were unable to fix the issue and our car is currently undriveable. Additionally, we encountered multiple paperwork issues on Toyota's end, which resulted in several trips to the dealership. While we were hoping for a replacement car, Toyota offered to buy the car back at a lower value than what we paid for it, citing the need to make a profit. As a result, we no longer feel safe driving our children in this car. While there are not many reviews available for the 2024 Grand Highlander, I would recommend avoiding this car and North Park Toyota. Doing so may save you money and headaches in the future.

I recently purchased a 2024 Grand Highlander, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues. At just 110 miles, I received constant warning lights and notices, which prompted me to take it in for servicing. Although the issue was resolved after a reset, the same problem occurred again a week later. The dealership then upgraded the software, but at 800 miles, the same issue arose once more. Despite taking it in for servicing, I was informed that they could not upgrade the software any further. Two days later, the same issue occurred again, and I was left feeling frustrated. I contacted the dealership, but was informed that they could not do anything until Toyota figures out a solution. It's disappointing to experience these issues, especially considering the high price tag of the car. Additionally, I have noticed that the cruise control does not work during these dashboard warnings. I hope that Toyota can address these issues soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I purchased my Grand Highlander in October and have unfortunately experienced some issues. The driver side door has been rattling and has required three visits to the shop. Although the part was on back order, the rattle returned after an attempt at repair. Additionally, a check engine light has appeared with a system malfunction, drive start control malfunction, and AWD malfunction with 2WD mode engaged. As a result, I will be making my fourth trip to the dealership. Despite these challenges, I am confident that the dealership will be able to resolve these issues and I look forward to enjoying my car for years to come.

As a previous Highlander owner, I was a bit surprised by the bulkiness and lack of solidity when driving. Additionally, the leather seats were uncomfortable due to the fancy stitching. However, I appreciate the unique design and features of the car.

In just 7 months, my grand highlander has been to the shop three times for a water leak issue. Despite the expense of the car, the issue has not been resolved yet. As a result, I am disappointed with Toyota's service.
