The contact stated that his 1989 Nissan 300ZX was lifted onto the jack stands and after sliding from under the vehicle grabbing the frame of the vehicle to lift up both the jack stands positioned on the front driver’s side and front passenger’s side suddenly failed to cause the vehicle to crash to the ground nearly landing on top to the contact. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the car jack stands were purchased at Harbor Freight but were not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 20E046000 (Equipment).

- Summary: I AM THE OWNER OF A 1989 300ZX THAT I PURCHASED USED IN 2013. THE CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 160,000 MILES ON IT. APPROXIMATELY 6 WEEKS AGO, I NOTICED A FUEL ODOR AND AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH DETERMINED THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE IN 1996 FOR DEFECTIVE FUEL INJECTORS. THAT RECALL IS ATTACHED, I ALSO HAVE COPIES OF THE TSBS (10 DOCUMENTS TOTAL). A FEW DAYS AFTER NOTICING THE FUEL SMELL (WHICH I COULD NOT LOCATE THE SOURCE) THE CAR SUDDENLY DEVELOPED A FUEL RICH CONDITION AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO IDLE POORLY. FOR BACKGROUND, THE CAR WAS RUNNING FINE AND AFTER LEAVING A RESTAURANT, THE ISSUE APPEARED SUDDENLY. I CONTACTED NISSAN AND THEY TELL ME THEY HAVE NO RECORD OF THE RECALL OR ANY REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL DEALER (DICK SMITH IN COLUMBIA SC) AND THEY TELL ME THE SAME. THEIR DIAGNOSIS IS THAT MY RACK AND PINION ARE LEAKING. I DO NOT DISAGREE WITH THEIR DIAGNOSIS, BUT I DOUBT IT IS LEAKING FUEL. BASED ON THEIR TSB, IT APPEARS THAT THE REPAIR WORK WAS NEVER PERFORMED ON THIS VEHICLE AND SINCE THE RECALL WAS ISSUED MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS AFTER THE BUILD DATE, THAT OWNER AND SUBSEQUENT OWNERS WERE LIKELY NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. I HAVE ASKED THEM TO PERFORM THE RECALL WORK PER THE TSB INSTRUCTIONS BUT SO FAR THEY HAVE REFUSED.

THEY SAID IF THE VEHICLE WAS MORE THAN 11 YEARS OLD, THEY "DE-ARCHIVE" THE DATA FROM THEIR DATABASE, AND THEREFORE MY VIN WILL NOT COME UP IN THEIR RECORDS. THEY SAID IT HAS NO "ACTIVE RECALLS" ON IT, BUT COULDN'T TELL ME IF THE REPAIRS FROM THE 2 RECALLS ON THAT MODEL HAD EVER BEEN DONE. IS THERE ANY WAY FOR ME TO FIND OUT IF THOSE REPAIRS WERE EVER DONE? I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR NOW, NOT KNOWING IF IT IS SAFE OR NOT, AND NISSAN WON'T HELP. THE VEHICLE IS GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORST. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALER AND WAS TOLD THEY CAN NOT PERFORM THE RECALL DUE TO PARTS AVAILABILITY. THEY TOLD ME THAT I CAN FIND THE PARTS AFTER MARKET PRODUCED AND THEY WOULD NEGOTIATE PAYMENT REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE PARTS BUT COST OF LABOR WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY, THIS WAS ALSO TOLD TO ME BY NISSAN CONSUMERS AFFAIRS SERVICE OF NORTH AMERICA THE REGIONAL DIRECTORS NAME THAT I SPOKE TO ONLY WOULD GIVE ME HIS FIRST NAME "MIKE". I WAS ABLE TO LOCATED THE PARTS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE THRU NISSAN. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IT SHOULD BE MY RESPONSIBILITY TO HANDLE THIS WHEN THIS WAS A NATIONAL RECALL. ALSO A NOTE, THIS VEHICLE IS STORED IN MY HOME IN A GARAGE BELOW THE LIVING QUARTERS. THE DEFECT CAUSES FIRE IN THE VEHICLE. NISSAN CORP CUSTOMER SERVICE IS GIVING ME A RUN AROUND, THE DEALERS HAVE STATED THAT THEY WOULD PERFORM THE RECALL IF THE PARTS WERE MADE AVAILABLE. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ASSISTANCE WITH THIS MATTER BEFORE THIS VEHICLE BURNS ALONG WITH HOPEFULLY NOT A MORE SERIOUS SITUATION. - Summary: IN DECEMBER 2008 I BOUGHT A WATER PUMP FOR MY 1990 NISSAN 300ZX FROM ADVANCE AUTO PARTS IN MAULDIN, SC. IT FAILED WITHIN FOUR WEEKS, CAUSING MY ENGINE TO OVERHEAT. I HANDED THE DEFECTIVE PUMP BACK TO THE STORE PERSONNEL. A WEEP HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE PUMP WAS SPURTING OUT WATER, AND THE SPINNING PART WAS CHEWED UP. THE STORE PERSONNEL TOLD ME THE PUMP WAS VISIBLE DEFECTIVE. THE STORE GAVE ME A RECEIPT FOR A REPLACEMENT PUMP, WHICH I PICKED UP FROM AN ADVANCE AUTO STORE/PARTS WAREHOUSE IN SPARTANBURG, SC. WITHIN THREE WEEKS THAT PART FAILED, MY ENGINE OVERHEATED, AND WAS DESTROYED. INCREDIBLY, THE STORE AND THE REGIONAL MANAGER TOLD ME THEIR SYSTEM HAD LOST THE FIRST PUMP, WHICH THEY HAD SENT BACK TO A REGIONAL PARTS RETURN WAREHOUSE IN GEORGIA. THEY WANTED THE SECOND PUMP, BUT COULD NOT GIVE ME A NAME, POSITION, OR DEPARTMENT THAT WOULD ACTUALLY RECEIVE THE PUMP, OR A TRACKING NUMBER OR METHOD. I WAS LUCKY THAT THE PUMP FAILURES HAD NOT PUT ME IN A LIFE OR DEATH SITUATION ON A HIGHWAY MEDIAN, OR FAILED ME DURING A FREEZING RAINSTORM. UNFORTUNATELY, THE TWO FAILURES DESTROYED MY CAR ENGINE. I WAS SHOCKED THAT NO TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION HAD BEEN DONE OF THE FIRST PART, NO DOCUMENT HOLD HAD BEEN ISSUED, AND THEY SEEMED UNCONCERNED ABOUT THEIR INABILITY TO TRACK DEFECTIVE PARTS WHICH HAD BEEN RETURNED TO THEM. I purchased this vehicle from an individual with 160,000 miles on it. Although it was initially fast, I encountered several issues with it, including a faulty knock sensor that was retarding the timing, which cost me $700 to replace. Additionally, I experienced problems with the sensors, pulleys, and transmission. Despite its attractive appearance and fun T-tops, my overall experience with this vehicle was unsatisfactory.

I purchased this car used from a gentleman in March of 2008 and I absolutely loved it. Out of all the cars I have driven, this one is the most fun to drive, mostly due to the manual transmission. Unfortunately, three months later, the clutch went out, partially due to my inexperience with driving stick on this car. I don't believe the clutch had ever been replaced before. After replacing it, the car wouldn't start two weeks later. I assumed it was just due to the age of the car, but it happened again three or four months later and I had to replace it once again. Interestingly, at a car show, I met someone who knew the previous owner and they mentioned that he used it as a project car. I suspect that may be one reason why the car always needed repairs.
