Mercury Milan hybrid problems

mercury logo

The Mercury Milan is a mid-size car that was marketed by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company. Named after Milan, an Italian city, the Milan was sold across the 2006 to 2011 model years in a single generation. The smaller of two model lines developed to replace the Mercury Sable, it indirectly succeeded the Mercury Mystique as the smallest Mercury sedan.

Unveiled at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show, the Milan was the first new Mercury sedan nameplate introduced since 1995, and became the final nameplate introduced by the division. Coinciding with the 2010 closure of Mercury, the Milan ended sales after a shortened 2011 model year; the final vehicle was produced on December 17, 2010. The Milan was sold in the United States (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Mexico, and the Middle East.

Throughout its production, the Milan was produced alongside the Ford Fusion at Hermosillo Stamping & Assembly in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.

  • Fuel System Problems:
    • Recalls have been issued for fuel system issues, specifically related to fuel vapor canisters and purge valves not operating correctly, leading to abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.
    • Owners have reported decreased fuel efficiency over time, potentially due to issues with the fuel system affecting the vehicle's performance and mileage.
  • Wheel Stud Fractures:
    • A recall was issued for wheel studs potentially fracturing, which could cause a wheel to separate from the vehicle.
    • This safety concern prompted Ford to inspect rear brake discs for flatness, replace discs as necessary, and replace wheel lug nuts on all four wheels to address the issue.
  • Power Steering Assist Shutdown:
    • Some Mercury Milan Hybrid models experienced electric power steering assist systems shutting down due to steering motor sensor faults.
    • Ford issued a recall to check the Power Steering Control Module for Diagnostic Trouble Codes and replace the steering gear if necessary, or update the software to address the issue.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-09
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3MEHM0JA6AR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My name is [XXX] and I own a 2010 Mercury Milan. I bought it on [XXX] from an 84 year old woman who take good care of it. It had 91,000 miles which were mostly hwy miles. She kept records of all her oil changes. After having it for almost 3 years and keeping up with it myself, on February 27,2024 in the morning I put brake fluid in the car. I had brake pads and rotors done on the car in August 2023. On the evening of [XXX], my son and I took a ride to the local 7/11 which is 5 minutes away. While driving home and coming to the traffic light at the beginning of my neighborhood the light turned red. As I proceeded to stop my foot went all the way to the ground and I had no brakes. I had to go through the light because i could not stop. The car was flying down the road because it is a very steep hill. I tried to pull the emergency brake and nothing happened. I was nearing the end of the road going 40 MPH due to the hill. I thought I was going to hit my neighbors house at the bottom of the hill. My son grabbed the steering wheel to turn it and I went up on my curb, across my lawn and crashed into a storage tent on my driveway. My car was wedged inside the tent which was filled with furniture and other belongings. I called Ford Corporation in reference to this recall from December 2019 for 2010 Mercury Milans. Then I spoke with a Ford dealership in Smithtown where they were rude and said the car was 14 years old and I may have to pay if they didn't find my car was part of the recall. I tried calling several other numbers in Washington and was finally told to upload the horrible situation that had occurred due to my brakes not working on this website. Someone needs to look at my car to make sure this will not happen to others. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
  • Date Complaint: 2024-05-23
  • VIN: 3MEDM0L36AR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On May 10, 2024, as I was rounding a sharp curve, I applied brakes to slow down, but there were no brakes. In fact the brake pedal went to the floor. I had to use emergency brake to stop and gain my wits. I turned around and slowly drove home (about 0.5 miles) and used e-brake to stop and park in front of house. On May 21 I had vehicle towed to dealer. They found that the brake pedal was still against floorboard, but when they started vehicle, it came back up to normal position and was working fine. They could not duplicate the loss of brakes. My vehicle was manufactured within the date range of a TSB regarding hydraulic control unit and DOT3 brake fluid corrosion, but dealer says VIN not applicable to TSB. I am thinking of paying for new HCU anyway, just for my family's protection. I would like my VIN to be included in TSB repair.

    Vehicle year: 2010

We've had it for three weeks and went to the highest peak on the east coast without any problems. It has good pick-up, excellent features, and we're averaging 40 miles to the gallon. It's great to see such a solid, well-built American car. While it would have been nice to have memory for the driver's seat, we're still impressed with what it offers.

I've owned a Mustang, a Taurus, and 5 Honda's (Accords & a CRX). This time I chose the Mercury Milan and I'm glad I did. No Honda ever had the same 'substantial' sound I hear when I close the door of my new Milan. I regularly get 38 mph and I tend to accelerate a little rapidly from a complete stop. The fit and finish well exceed my last Honda (2005 Accord). The technology behind the accessories, safety options, and advanced hybrid system have no equal in Honda products. This car could be the start of a new series with Ford Motor products!

    Vehicle year: 2010

After completing a 2200 mile road trip in three months, I have formed a comfortable opinion on this vehicle. I absolutely love the mileage, which can go as high as 60 in short (5-10mi) urban trips according to the computer. During the road trip, I validated the computer calculations and was pleasantly surprised. The interior is nice and I have received lots of compliments on the exterior styling. However, there are some missed cues in this car that I find disappointing. The headrests are a particular issue - designers, what were you thinking? My wife and I both have to recline the seatback excessively to find a comfortable position for our necks. Additionally, the lack of Homelink and memory seats is surprising, as these are standard items in this price category.

I bought this car because it met all my requirements: a 30+ MPG hybrid with leather seats and a moonroof, made by American car makers. If you're looking for the same, this car is perfect for you! While it may not be a sports car, it's a smooth cruiser with plenty of power when needed. Personally, I love the Mercury styling and the car is loaded with terrific technology. The engine is so seamless that I have to check the dash to see if it's running, unless I gun it. I'm getting an impressive 38MPG combined, and up to 48-50 on my 15-mile trip to work if I take the back roads. I can go up to 600 miles on a single tank without sacrificing anything.

Ford has finally gotten it right! I used to own a 1990 Taurus SHO and have owned 3 foreign cars before my Milan. I was hesitant to buy American, but according to CR, it is reliable and well-made. My only concern will be its resale value in 3-5 years since most American cars really fail that category. However, I got a great deal and with the Federal tax credit and sales tax deduction, it's an even better deal! The Milan has better handling and road feel than a 2009 Accord and seats better than a Camry. Although, the front headrests take some getting used to. I have had no issues with the car and even though the mileage is down because of winter cold, it's still better than my V-6 Accord. The sound system is excellent and the Milan is a better deal than the Fusion!
