The Infiniti QX70, formerly called the Infiniti FX until 2013, is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by the Nissan-owned Infiniti luxury vehicle brand between 2002 and 2017. The FX replaced the QX4 as Infiniti's mid-size SUV. It shares the same FM platform as the rear-wheel drive Nissan 370Z, and it "made no claims of climbing mountains." Rather, its aggressive shape promised style and quick handling. The similarly sized Nissan Murano is based on the same D platform as the front-wheel drive Nissan Altima. The FX does not have a Nissan-branded equivalent and is not sold in Japan.

The FX introduced its second generation for the 2009 model year as the FX35 and FX50.

First generation (S50; 2003)

The nameplates FX35 and FX45 refer to the two available engines. The FX35 is available in two drivetrains, the RWD and the AWD, which are both fitted to a dual overhead cam 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 VQ35DE gasoline engine, with aluminum-alloy block and heads, electronically controlled throttle system, and low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons that makes use of the continuous variable valve timing which in part optimizes the opening of intake valves. This is also coupled with an electronically controlled super-wide ratio five-speed automatic with a manumatic shift mode that includes the option of sequentially selected manual gearshifts and downshift rev-matching.

The AWD FX45 incorporates a 4.5 L (4,494 cc) 32-valve V8 DOHC VK45DE gasoline engine with four valves per cylinder, microfinished camshafts with aluminum-alloy block and heads, low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons, titanium intake and exhaust valves, modular cylinder heads, microfinished crankshaft, lightweight pistons, super-silent single stage cam drive chain, and a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System that optimizes opening of intake valves. Development began in 1999 under newly appointed CEO Carlos Ghosn's NRP. Design work was completed in rapid succession in 2000, for late 2002 production. Designed prior to that, earlier on in 2000 under the "Bionic Cheetah" theme, the 2001 Infiniti FX45 Concept was introduced at the NAIAS in January 2001. From mid-2001, a new concept based on the production design was developed and completed in late 2001. Sketches were first released in late November 2001. The second-generation 2002 FX45 Concept was introduced in January 2002 at the NAIAS '02 as a thinly-veiled production FX (S50) and planned production was announced for early 2003. In January 2003, the 2003 FX45 made its debut at the 2003 NAIAS and went on sale January 24, 2003.

In 2003 for the 2004 model, changes were the addition of a standard eight-way power front passenger seat that replaced the previous four-way design, the availability of aluminum roof rails and chrome-plated 20-inch wheels. Also new were a dark silver metallic finish for the 20-inch wheels (non-chrome-plated), the addition of a standard HVAC filter for all models and the addition of a new Snow-Mode function.

In September 2004 for the 2005 model year, the FX range received enhancements such as a lane departure warning (LDW) system that helps alert drivers to an unintended movement of the vehicle out of a designated traffic lane. Infiniti's system monitored the lane markings to alert passengers via an audible buzzer that the driver is drifting unintentionally. The LDW system, which utilizes a small camera, speed sensor, an indicator, and an audible warning buzzer, was offered on models. The 2005 Infiniti FX was the first passenger vehicle to offer a lane departure warning system in the United States market. In addition to LDW, the 2005 Infiniti FX range was now equipped with standard roof-mounted curtain supplemental curtain airbags with rollover protection for front and rear outboard seat occupants.

Other changes included the addition of a dark chrome grille, headlight, and clear taillight accents to the FX45 (also available as part of the V6 Sport Package on FX35 models), a new key fob design for the Infiniti Intelligent Key system, and two new exterior colors, Sapphire and Sheer Platinum. Interior changes included a new standard etched aluminum trim.

Total 2007 sales of the FX45 were 1,598 units, about a tenth of the FX35s.

  • Summary: The issue I have experienced involved my car stalling due to an inaccurate fuel gauge reading: basically, ran out of gas on a road while fuel gage was still showing half tank full. Luckily, was able to avoid any accident. The error code came up: P0462, which stands for “Fuel Level Sensor ‘A’ Circuit Low,” and indicates a problem with the fuel level sensor circuit. I was going to replace the fuel gauge/pump, but was told by a Nissan technical adviser at the dealership, the root cause is likely a faulty instrument cluster module, which is responsible for processing and displaying the fuel level information. This malfunction can lead to incorrect fuel readings, causing the car to stall unexpectedly.

  • Summary: A sensor, or trio of sensors, in the passenger side airbag system failed. Nissan/Infiniti says they cant be sure which of the three sensors is causing the problem and needs to replace all three. One of the sensors is integrated into the passenger seat itself and therefore the entire seat must be replaced. This all adds up to a very expensive repair cost of over $10,000 for sensors that are not accessible by the user, and therefore failed because of a manufacturer's defect, and not because of wear and tear, or anything caused by the user. Infiniti is unable to tell me how the passenger side airbag will react in the event of an accident, so that leads me to beleive the vehible is possibly unsafe, and a risk to anyone riding in the front passenger's seat. The problem has been inspected and is documented with the Infiniti and the Sewell Dealership in Dallas, Texas. The vehicle has not been inspected by the police or insurance representatives, but rather the Sewell Infiniti Service Center. There is an airbag light flashing on the dashboard. That is what alerted me to the problem and prompted me to take it in for inspection of the issue.

  • Summary: Multiple incidents of car not starting or stalling in rain. 1. After a rainstorm while parked, noticed water on the driver side floor and dripping from the driver door side under dashboard, water coming from defective design of sunroof water drains/tubing which are clogged because the tube is too thin which traps common dirt and dust from rain and road water. A wider diameter tubing or requiring maintenance during oil change intervals (blowing air into the tubing to unblock the clog) would likely solve this defect and car owners money. Car would not start for 2 days afterwards until all the water was dried from interior cabin. This problem repeated itself every time it rained - I had to tape the sunroof closed to prevent water ingress as a temporary measure and ultimately had the tubing replaced by the dealership at a cost of $1326.97 which was not covered by warranty. A simple inexpensive fix of adding to the scheduled maintenance at oil change intervals, the blowing of air into the tube to clear blockage would solve this pervasive problem among Infiniti cars with sunroofs ( as suggested by Infiniti service rep). Even though Infiniti knows about this problem, they chose to not alert owners to clear the tubing now and then. Infiniti benefits from this defect with huge profits having to replace the entire sunroof drains at thousands of dollar expense for owners - Another incident 10/2023, 100 miles from home, while driving down [XXX] in a massive summer downpour led to water ingress into driver side cabin and stalling of the car on the highway and car refusing to go fast. After I turned the car off, the car would not immediately start again. After drying the driver side out with paper towels, the car eventually started. I turned on the car heater at full blast and temperature to dry the car floorboard. After it was full dry the car operated correctly but creates anxiety in no knowing if the car will stall out again. The brakes had no effect and the car proceeded across the street and up the neighbor's driveway and finally stopped just short of their garage door. All this time I was applying the brake repeatedly with no result. Why it stopped just in time to save neighbor's door I don't know. I was too panicked to think of using the parking brake until later. A similar incident had occurred about a year ago in a restaurant drive-through. At that time I rear-ended the car in front about instantly, the cars were so close together. It happened so fast I thought maybe I had pushed both accelerator and brake with one foot, so I called it driver error and thought no more about it. This time there was plenty of time and no doubt about it, I applied the brakes many times and nothing worked until right at the top of their driveway. The current incident happened on May 16, 2021. I had taken the car (Infiniti QX70) to Nissan Reno on May 14 for oil change, filter, and brake fluid exchange, since Infiniti Reno was closed until further notice. The timing makes me wonder whether something happened during the fluid exchange. I haven't been back to Nissan Reno, not sure whether to trust them. This was reported to Ask Infiniti web site, and their suggestion was to take the car to nearest open Infiniti dealer in Roseville CA about 120 miles away. With questionable brakes? I don't think so.

    I have owned three Infiniti FX cars - a 2006, 2009, and 2012 model. I was in the process of finalizing the purchase of a 2015 QX70. All of my cars were excellent in terms of safety, drive, handling, and reliability. While there were a few areas of concern over the years, they were minor and did not detract from the overall quality of the cars. The rear seat room was adequate, but some passengers may have difficulty getting in and out due to the shape of the rear doors. However, children should have no problem. The rear cargo capacity was also fine for my needs, but it may not be sufficient for those who require a larger SUV. My most recent car was in Midnight Mocha with brown leather interior, which was a nice deep root beer color. The metallic exterior paint appeared as a deep eggplant purple in many lighting situations, including daylight/sunlight. The basic interior choices for the car are either graphite gray or light wheat. While the brown interior may not be to everyone's taste, it adds a touch of uniqueness to the car. However, some parts of the interior, such as the doors and portions of the dash, remain the standard graphite, which may appear incomplete to some. The brown floormats over the basic graphite carpet may also look odd to some. This issue should only occur with a Mocha/brown leather equipped car, as all other exterior color combos provide for graphite or wheat interior. The car was fun to drive and had great exterior styling. However, for any driver who finds technology to be important, the FX and QX70 may not meet their expectations. The software and user interface for Navigation, Bluetooth, and audio entertainment could be improved. Test drives of other cars will demonstrate much better controls and interfaces. The car has only one USB outlet, and the voice interface may not work as well as expected. Despite these minor issues, the car is still a great choice for those who prioritize style and performance over technology.Limited information is displayed when using your own devices via Bluetooth or USB, and even for the satellite radio. Additionally, there is no ability to control music selection with voice commands. However, it is important to note that the navigation dataset loaded into new cars is severely outdated. Whatever source Infiniti uses for nav-data is not up to par. Roads and businesses that have been in existence for several years simply don't appear in the Infiniti's Nav, not even in brand new cars. As a long-time Infiniti owner, I decided to pay particular attention to the Nav/entertainment system when preparing to buy the QX70. I tried several different automobile brands and found that design and software varied from manufacturer to manufacturer, with many aspects of the Infiniti being less than ideal. I made a list of several destinations, all established in early 2014 or in prior years, and then tested the 2015 cars from several manufacturers, including the 2016 QX70. While not one business from 2013 or 2014 was found on the Nav dataset in the 2015 or even the 2016 QX70, at least 80% were found in all of the other 2015 cars, and often 100%. If you don't care about user toys/entertainment/navigation, then the QX70 is a fantastic car. However, if you are looking for a premium automobile with top-of-the-line technology, you may want to consider other options. It is important to test these systems in the QX70 before finalizing a purchase/lease decision. After 9 years, I decided to switch to another manufacturer's crossover because the technology in the QX70 was not up to my standards. I will check back in on the Infiniti when I'm ready for a new car in a few years. If the technology is updated and comparable to other manufacturers, I'll probably return to being an Infiniti owner.

    The car unfortunately has a dangerous blind spot at the driver's rear right side. Additionally, I had to replace the transmission at 74K miles, only 4K miles past the bumper-to-bumper warranty. I contacted Infiniti Consumer Affairs to see if they could offer any assistance, but unfortunately they declined. The transmission ended up costing me $2,500. To make matters worse, at 85K miles, the clear coat finish is wearing off in multiple areas and looks terrible. While I could bring it to a body shop and have the clear coat and all the paint sanded off and have the entire car repainted, that would cost me thousands of dollars. This was my first

    My wife and I drove from Gainesville, Florida to purchase this vehicle. However, we were disappointed to find that the brakes and rotors were worn, and the aftermarket rims and tires were scratched on the driver's side and worn to the point of needing replacement. Although the sports package was described online, the tires and rims did not meet our expectations. We asked for a vehicle inspection report, but were told that it was not available as the service department was closed on Saturday. We were hoping for a price drop of $1500 to buy a set of used exact factory 21” from EBAY, but the sales manager only agreed to reduce the price by $500. Despite these issues, we appreciate the sales manager's efforts to work with us. It's unfortunate that the dealership was not more flexible in resolving these issues, especially since the vehicle has been for sale since November 2020. Thank you for your time.

    I have a good friend who owns a 2014 version of this car, and although I initially found it a little odd looking (and still do), I really enjoyed riding in it. In 2017, I decided to get a new car and after looking at all the midsize SUV's available, I was drawn to the Qx70 because I wanted something fun to drive and the car had gone out of production, so I felt I could get a good deal on one. I actually got a spectacular deal on a CPO with only 4400 miles on it ($36K for a car with a $52K sticker) and 42 months of manufacturer warranty left. It was a corporate-owned vehicle used by a Nissan exec. Although this vehicle really depreciates in its first year, my gain points out a negative, so if you buy one, you need to keep it. I purposely stayed away from the sport and limited models because the 18-inch wheel has a lot more air and rubber on the wheels compared to the 20/21-inch wheels, which makes a difference in softening the ride. I think the big wheels look great, but I wanted a more standard issue tire. The technology is old but proven, so no trips to the dealership for bugs in the driver assist functions or transmission. The navigation system has both touchscreen and button panel, and although the touchscreen is a little far away for use when driving, the buttons are intuitive. The car drives wonderfully, with off-the-charts responsiveness and smooth, powerful rear-wheel drive acceleration. I just love driving it, and it is more comfortable than I expected. The biggest negative is the fuel economy, which is 17/21 with premium fuel, but I knew that going in, and the deal I got will pay for a lot of fuel! This is a great car! Update: I've had it for about 10 months now, and I still love the way it drives. The gas mileage is lousy, particularly since you have to buy premium fuel, and the storage area is too small, but I knew all these things going in. I would buy it again. People tell me how comfortable it is in the front seat, although not as much in the back, but it's good enough.It sounds like this car would be perfect for someone who enjoys a powerful driving experience, or for a young family. However, it may not have enough space for a larger family with older children or adults who require more room.

    The QX-70 (Limited) is actually my third Infiniti. I've previously owned a 2003 and a 2007 FX-35, and I absolutely loved driving both of them. Unfortunately, the first one was totaled when I was rear-ended at a traffic light, but thankfully my wife and I walked away without a scratch. I drove the second one for over 170k's before realizing that 2017 was the last year they were made. I really liked the look of the QX-70, so I decided to upgrade. I priced my 2007 just below the local dealers' ads and sold it almost immediately, before I could even unload my personal items. I really enjoy the way the QX-70 handles, although the FX-35 models had more of a sporty feel. I was a bit disappointed to find out that Infiniti didn't include the available blind spot detection system, and that they cut corners on the build quality (for example, the gas cap door and other areas feel/sound a bit cheap). Additionally, they only offered one interior package on the limited model. I still miss the sound of the 3.5 engine, which always turned heads wherever I went!!!

    I love this car so much, I've owned 3. Although the 1st two were the FX37, my 3rd one, the QX70 is the same vehicle with just a name change. The only thing I would like to see is an upgraded technology package to stay aligned with its closest SUV competitors, the BMW and Volvo.

    I owned a 2004 FX35 and it was the best car I've ever had. It had 240K miles on it when I hit a deer head-on while traveling at 75 mph. The airbags deployed and the insurance company totaled the car, but despite the cosmetic damage, there was no structural or mechanical damage. I was able to drive it home with the deflated airbags flapping. I decided to buy the same car again, just a newer version, and I'm so glad I did. The car is stunning, powerful, and comfortable. I recently took it on a Thanksgiving trip from Florida to Kentucky and it was a joy to drive. The technology is well-placed and easy to access, and I love that my phone is synced via Bluetooth and that I can play all my music through the USB cord. The SAT, AM, FM, and aux are all just a simple push of a button, and the sound quality is fantastic. The only thing I miss from my old car is the middle retractable cup holder on the floor in the back. The gearing is different from the FX35, but it's still smooth and powerful. The 21-inch tires on dark grey wheels look amazing and the car handles like a sports car. I'm very happy with my purchase! It's been 8 months and I wouldn't change a thing, except for the phone via Bluetooth. It takes voice commands, then asks me to verify it got it right by picking a number, and it displays 5 names from my contact list, and the one I want is always #1. I wish I could bypass the verification and have it just call. I also added 3M clear bra to the front, mirrors, and door handles. It's a great product that protects from bug chips and you can't even see it unless you're up close and looking for the line across the hood. It's been just over a year now and I still love it. There have been some quirky anomalies with the music/phone interface, but I haven't been able to get it to the dealer to check it out. It still works, but sometimes differently than it should.Just over 29K miles, and with regular maintenance, it still drives and looks like new. My daughter even says it still smells new! I've lost count of how many strangers have complimented how beautiful the car is. In my opinion, the Infiniti QX 70 Limited is the star of the entire Nissan/Infiniti menu.
