Infiniti M37 problems

The Infiniti M is a line of mid-size luxury (executive) cars from the Infiniti luxury division of Nissan. From 2013 (model year 2014) on it has been marketed as the Infiniti Q70, reflecting the company's new naming scheme.

The first iteration was the M30 Coupé/Convertible, which were rebadged JDM Nissan Leopard. After a long hiatus, the M nameplate was used for Infiniti's mid-luxury sedans (executive cars). First was the short-lived M45 sedan, a rebadged version of the Japanese-spec Nissan Gloria. The next generations, the M35/45 and M37/56/35h/30d, became the flagship of the Infiniti brand and are based on the JDM Nissan Fuga.

First generation (1989–1992)

The Infiniti M30 was a 2-door coupé based on the Japanese market Nissan Leopard (chassis code F31). It was launched in 1989 for the 1990 model year as a luxury coupe alternative to the Infiniti Q45, and was intended to be an alternative to the Lexus SC and Acura Legend coupe for the North American market.

Unlike its competitors that were designed with the American market in mind and were launched as brand-new models, the M30 was based on a somewhat dated platform that was originally designed for the Japanese market; when the Leopard was imported to the United States, few changes were made to the exterior but the interior was revised to better suit American tastes; a leather interior was standard in the M30, and several features in the Leopard such as a center-mounted television screen and a digital instrument cluster weren't available in the M30 as those features were perceived as gimmicks in western car markets.

The M30's angular design aesthetics and on-road performance were viewed as outdated, especially considering a redesigned Acura Legend coupe was launched in 1991. The interior came in for criticism for its outdated ergonomics and lack of room. While the Japanese-market Leopard had received a new dashboard along with the 1988 facelift, economics precluded making a left-hand-drive version of the new dashboard and the M30 was instead fitted with the LHD version of the R31 Skyline's rectilinear dashboard, first presented in 1985.

The M30 made up for these deficiencies in its somewhat lower price; whereas the 1990 Acura Legend coupe started at $27,325 before options and the 1990 BMW 325i started at $24,650 before options, the M30 started at $23,500, and had no factory options, per Infiniti's pricing structure used at the time. Dealerships offered an in-car cellular telephone and in-dash CD player as optional accessories, amongst other items.

Common Infiniti M37 problems

The Infiniti M37 is a luxury sedan that has been praised for its performance and comfort. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain issues and problems.

One common problem with the Infiniti M37 is excessive oil consumption. This can be caused by a number of factors, including worn piston rings or valve seals. This issue can lead to frequent oil changes and increased maintenance costs. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent this issue from occurring or worsening.

Another issue reported by some owners of the 2012 Infiniti M37 is related to the transmission. Some drivers reported that their transmission would hesitate or shudder during acceleration, particularly when shifting between gears. This could be due to a faulty torque converter or transmission control module, and in some cases, a transmission replacement may be necessary.

The electrical system is another area where some 2012 Infiniti M37 owners have reported issues. Some drivers experienced problems with the navigation system, which may freeze or display inaccurate information. In addition, some drivers reported issues with the power steering, which could lead to difficulty in steering and an increased risk of accidents.

The fuel system is another area where some 2012 Infiniti M37 owners have reported issues. Some drivers reported that their engine would hesitate or stall during acceleration or at low speeds. This could be due to a clogged fuel filter or a malfunctioning fuel pump, which can cause insufficient fuel flow to the engine.

Finally, some 2012 Infiniti M37 owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, which could blow warm air or fail to produce cold air altogether. This could be due to a leak in the refrigerant system or a faulty compressor.

It's important to note that not all Infiniti M37 vehicles will experience these issues, and that regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent problems from occurring. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it's recommended to take your vehicle to a certified mechanic for diagnosis and repair.

In addition to the issues reported by 2012 Infiniti M37 owners, there have also been reports of transmission issues with the 2011 Infiniti M37. Some drivers have experienced delayed or rough shifting, or even complete transmission failure. This could be due to a faulty transmission control module, which may need to be replaced. Finally, some 2011 Infiniti M37 owners have reported problems with the suspension system, which may manifest as a rough ride or noisy suspension. This could be due to worn suspension components, such as shocks or struts, which may need to be replaced.

In general, the Infiniti M37 has a reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 5th out of 30 for luxury fullsize cars. The average annual repair cost is $628, which means it has average ownership costs. While repairs are more common, these issues are less likely to be severe than with other cars. Expect to make slightly more trips to the shop with a M37, but for minor issues.

  • VIN: JN1BY1AP5CM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2012 Infiniti M37. The contact stated that the front passenger's side air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact was quoted a diagnostic fee and declined to pay the fee. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
Infiniti M37 2013
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-15
  • Date Complaint: 2023-11-28
  • VIN: JN1BY1AP7DM
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: In December, 2022, the airbag warning light activated. AT a cost to us of over $1500, the Infiniti dealer replaced the failed sensor. What we did not know is that this did not fix the problem and the air bag on the passenger side would never have deployed in the event of an accident. In November, 2023, the airbag warning light again activated. It turns out that the seat assembly had actually failed of which we were unaware. This is a very expensive repair to a part that should never have failed in the first place. After significant discussions with Infiniti, they did decide to cover the cost of the seat assembly itself but not the labor to install it (another $800). At this time, we are still unclear as to whether this will actually solve the problem. Aside from a very expensive repair to a part which never should have failed (especially since the car is very lightly driven) we were and are very concerned that this could have resulted in a very serious injury in the event of a vehicle crash. We consider the discussions with Inifiniti to be unsatisfactory with respect to the whole incident.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-31
  • Date Complaint: 2023-01-03
  • VIN: JN1BY1AP8CM
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2012 Infiniti M37. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to an independent mechanic for an oil change, she was informed that the radiator pressure O-ring was leaking coolant. The independent mechanic diagnosed that the radiator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 96,294.
Infiniti M37 2013
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-27
  • Date Complaint: 2022-12-30
  • VIN: JN1BY1AP7DM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag control module failed on this car which has under 25000 miles on it. The airbag would not have deployed if the car was in an accident and insurance claims would have been void so we had no choice but to immediately replace the module at a cost of over $2,000. The dealer inspected and confirmed that this was the case (and also that they have seen it happen on other Infinity's). The warning light was the first indication of the problem and we immediately took it to the dealer who replaced it. We can understand mechanical failures in an older car but it seems ridiculous that this vital piece of safety equipment would fail on a car with very low mileage and we have never had a car where the airbag system failed.
Infiniti M37 2012
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-17
  • Date Complaint: 2022-08-15
  • VIN: JN1BY1AP9CM
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: Passenger Air Bag Sensor Failed. Concerned Passenger Airbag will not deploy when passengers are in the car. This is a Very Known and Problematic issue with Infiniti and Infiniti will not address this critical safety issue. Infiniti says repairs would be the owner responsibility and cost in excess of $8,000. This is a critical safety issue and needs to be addressed by Infiniti before someone gets hurt.
Infiniti M37 2011
  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-10
  • Date Complaint: 2021-11-08
  • VIN: JN1BY1AP5BM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The Air Bag Warning Light on the dash blinks continuously and the Front Passenger Air Bag Status Light remains on whether or not the seat is occupied. I took the car to the Infiniti dealer. The Service Advisor said the Occupant Classification System Control Unit or OCS sensor needs to be replaced but Infiniti no longer provides this part; and furthermore, Infiniti advises against owner replacing the unit with a used part. I asked the Service Adviser what solution does Infiniti suggest and he said Infiniti does not suggest any solution. I contacted Infiniti Consumer Affairs Department. The Infiniti representative said the vehicle is more than 10 years old and Infiniti no longer manufactures the part; therefore, there is nothing they can do. I then asked the Infiniti Consumer Affairs Department what will happen in a situation where the airbags would normally be deployed considering the airbag warning light continues to blink and the “PASS AIR BAG” “2 OFF” is lit? I was told to ask to contact the dealer for their response. I wanted a response from Infiniti proper, the manufacturer, so I asked again. And again they said to contact the dealer. The dealer said all the airbags would be deployed at the same time and that there was no safety issue. Quoting from an Infiniti Service Bulletin Owner's Letter in the past: "If the red air bag warning light in your vehicle continuously flashes after the vehicle is started, please take your vehicle to the dealership as soon as possible. In the interim do not allow passengers to ride in the passenger seat. If the dealer fails, or is unable to make the necessary repairs free of charge, you may contact the National Consumer Affairs Department, Infiniti Division, Nissan North America, Inc., P.O. Box 685003, Franklin, TN 37068-5003. The toll free number is 1-800-662-6200. You may also contact the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration..." Infiniti admitted this is a safety issue.

  • Summary: VEHICLE HAS HESITATION DURING ACCELERATION, IT LAGS AND TRANSMISSION IS UNRESPONSIVE MOST OF THE TIMES. THERE ARE OTHER TIMES THAT THE VEHICLES TRANSMISSION WILL DOWNSHIFT AND REV UP WHILE COASTING DOWN HILL WHILE FOOT IS OFF ACCELERATOR. VEHICLE ONLY HAS 59K MILES ON IT AND SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THIS ISSUE. IT'S LIKE THE TRANSMISSION JUST DOESN'T KNOW WHAT GEAR IT SHOULD BE IN. INFINITI NEEDS TO FIX A CLEAR DESIGN PROBLEM!
Infiniti M37 2012
  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-09
  • Date Complaint: 2020-11-27
  • VIN: JN1BY1AP6CM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT WENT ON IN MY 2012 INFINITI M-37 UPON STARTING IT THE MORNING OF 10/09/2020. I BROUGHT IT INTO MY LOCAL TAMPA INFINITI DEALERSHIP ON 10/21/2020 WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR AND HAVE HAD OVER 90% OF THE SERVICING COMPLETED. MY SERVICE ADVISOR MICHAEL ENGLISH EXPLAINED TO ME THAT IT WOULD COST OVER $7104 TO REPLACE THE BOTTOM OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. IN ADDITION A DIAGNOSTIC SENSOR WOULD LIKELY NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $450. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THIS PROBLEM IS ONE THAT OCCURS IN A NUMBER OF INFINITI AUTOMOBILES OF THIS TYPE. HE WAS SORRY THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED BY ANY WARRANTY AND THAT IT DIDN'T SEEM FAIR THAT A RECALL WASN'T AVAILABLE TO REMEDY THE SAFETY PROBLEM. MY CAR HAS ONLY 120,000 MILES ON IT AND RUNS VERY WELL AND IS WORTH ABOUT $8000 AS A TRADE IN BUT NOT WITH A FAULTY PASSENGER SEAT SAFETY HAZARD. I CAN'T AFFORD TO FIX THIS PROBLEM THAT COST NEARLY AS MUCH THE CAR IS WORTH. HOW COULD INFINITI MAKE OR DESIGN A SEAT WITH AIR BAG SENSORS THAT CANT BE REPAIRED WITHOUT HAVING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SEAT? THIS IS THE RESULT OF POOR ENGINEERING AND IS A PRODUCT SAFETY HAZARD FORCING MANY CONSUMERS TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HAVING SAFETY EQUIPMENT OR DOING WITHOUT BECAUSE OF THE HIGH EXPENSE TO REPAIR. I'VE NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT TO DEPLOY THE AIRBAGS AND MY CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN GARAGE KEPT AND PROPERLY MAINTAINED. THIS IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND THERE SHOULD BE A REMEDY FOR ALL THOSE OWNERS OF THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE. I HAVE NOTICED THERE ARE MANY OWNERS OF SIMILAR INFINITI VEHICLES THAT HAVE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM.

  • VIN: JN1BY1AR5DM

  • Summary: WHEN I ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE DOESN'T SPEED UP AND SOMETIMES IT HESITATES. THIS IS DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHEN ENTERING THE FREEWAY IT TAKES A WHILE AFTER I ACCELERATE FOR THE CAR TO GET UP TO SPEED. SEEMS LIKE A TRANSMISSION ISSUE. INFINITI NEEDS A RECALL. I KNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE WITH THIS CAR AND HAVE THE SAME ISSUE.

    Vehicle year: 2011

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the car. While it's been great overall, I have noticed some issues with acceleration and braking. Specifically, the engine seems to stall when I try to pass someone and pulls back too hard when I brake. I was a bit surprised by this, especially considering the price of the car. Thanks for listening!

If you're an iPod user with current software (4.0 and higher), syncing it might not be possible at the moment. Unfortunately, Infiniti seems to be having some trouble with this and corporate customer service hasn't been able to provide a solution yet. It's definitely disappointing and frustrating. (I'm assuming the same might be true for iPhones.)

  2. Murphy Muller 2024-10-23

This car is outstanding! You made a great choice with the m37 and the sport package and premium package. The fun to drive factor is super high and the paddle shifters work great with downshift rev matching. I love the look and the interior fit and finish is gorgeous. Plus, the blue tooth phone and music streaming with your iPhone 4 work flawlessly and perfectly.

  3. Jessie Farrell 2024-10-16

This is our 4th Infiniti and I think it will be the best one, yet! Handling is great and it is fun to drive. We are enjoying the music box and, of course, the Bose system. It looks like it has better MPG than the M35.

  4. Blake Gislason 2024-10-07

Hey there! I just wanted to share my thoughts on the M37 with you. In my opinion, the Sport package really takes this car to the next level. Not only does it still provide a smooth ride and absorb bumps well, but it also handles like a dream compared to the base model. The interior materials are top-notch, with soft and supple leather that feels luxurious. And when you need to accelerate, this car definitely delivers. Plus, the sleek and sexy styling is just the cherry on top. Overall, I'd say this car is definitely luxury first and sporty second.

  5. Cordell Ward 2024-10-04

    Vehicle year: 2011

I recently purchased a new M37x in slate blue with a Java interior, complete with all three option packages (premium, tech, and deluxe touring) as well as a few dealer options. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this car and find it to be a significant improvement over my old 2006 M35x. In comparison to a 5 series BMW, the M offers more value for your money. The exterior design is beautiful and boasts a more aggressive stance than my old M. The interior design, materials, and craftsmanship are all gorgeous and outstanding. The 6 cylinder 3.7L engine is smooth yet very responsive, providing a nice upgrade from my old M. The car handles perfectly, just like my prior M, but with a much quieter cabin. The Bluetooth phone system is much better, and the Bose audio is stellar, not much different from my 2006 M. The many new tech features are a welcome addition.
