Hyundai Ioniq problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.

The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.

From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.

Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

Common Hyundai Ioniq problems

The Hyundai Ioniq, a popular hybrid electric vehicle, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues range from engine problems, coolant leaks, risk of power relay fire, and charging issues.

One of the most common problems with the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, specifically the 2017 model, is soy-based wires that are susceptible to being chewed by rodents. This issue has resulted in a significant repair cost, with an average of $2,400, and has been reported at an average mileage of 22,000 miles.

Another problem with the Hyundai Ioniq is a coolant leak that has affected early models built between October 4, 2016, and March 31, 2017. This leak can cause coolant to enter the electric power control unit, leading to potential engine damage. A recall has been issued for this issue, and owners are advised to contact their local Hyundai dealer to determine if their vehicle is affected.

The Ioniq has also been reported to have a risk of power relay fire, which can occur due to a faulty power relay. This issue can cause the power relay to catch fire in extreme circumstances, and Hyundai dealers are replacing the power relay and inspecting the power cable and relay assembly for any damage.

Charging issues have also been reported with the Hyundai Ioniq, with some owners experiencing problems with the EV charging system. Some owners have reported that the car trips the circuit breaker while charging, and the vehicle will not charge anywhere from that point forward. This issue has been reported to take several months to diagnose and fix, with some vehicles being at the dealership for four months.

The Ioniq's charging system has also been reported to have issues with overheating, with some owners having to set the charge rate to a lower level to avoid overheating the port and interrupting the charge. The dealer has not provided a fix for this issue, leading to dissatisfaction among some owners.

In summary, the Hyundai Ioniq has several common problems that owners have reported, including soy-based wires chewed by rodents, coolant leaks, risk of power relay fire, and charging issues. While some of these issues have been addressed through recalls and service campaigns, others remain unresolved, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction among some owners.

  • Summary: The Hyundai Ioniq was designed with a dual clutch system for the electric motor and gas motor. This was done to disengage and engage either separately when necessary for low power, regen braking, etc. However, this design heavily impacts the behavior of the brakes and safety of the vehicle overall. When the brakes are applied, the ECU will turn off the gas engine to conserve gas in regen braking mode. Additionally, the ECU will downshift the transmission. Downshifting the transmission and disengaging the gas engine become an issue because conducting both actions removes significant resistance in braking. Causing the vehicle to lurch when the downshift occurs while also increasing stopping distance. This downshift can be felt when braking as both loss of brake power and vehicle lurch. The system also does not account for this brake power loss by increasing brake booster response.

  • Summary: The display does not always show reverse camera when backing up. Not often, but does occur. I can use mirrors, etc. Annoying as it is a learned experience with this car, and when reverse camera is not operational it does limit view behind car due to design. I did capture video this time as it isn't first occurrence. I was in parking lot where I could do this without endangering anyone.

  • Summary: The hold app doesn't work very well. Since first check up in 2022, I mentioned to garage that I have to push on button every time I need to use it as opposed to pressing on it and removing it when desired. However, not the main issue. I get in the car, Auto Hold (which usually appears when I press the button) will suddenly pop on my screen but won't work. The break won't hold, it's just there. It scares me that it has something to do with the breaks themselves in the long run. I've spoken about it twice before and the garage stated that they couldn't see it so couldn't do anything about it. The issue popped on my dashboard one day and I drove straight to the dealership. They said they had no loaner and would call me. This was more than a month ago. I'm tired of trying to get them to address the issue and hoping that I'm not the only one having it.

  • Summary: The EPB light appeared on the dash panel of the car on 7/13/2023, along with the EPB light, the cruise control, the auto hold function, and the electric parking brake stopped functioning. The light will disappear on a restart and reappear after a period of time. It is indeterministic when the light will reappear on the dashboard. I have tried to contact the nearest dealer in an attempt to get the car inspected for safety reasons, however, the dealer was unavailable and Hyundai national customer service was unable to help. Hyundai's national customer service representative was also being deceptive as they transferred me to a dealer that is 425 miles away from the location I told them while giving me the impression that they were transferring me to a local dealer. The car was eventually inspected by two different Hyundai dealers. The first dealer informed me that there was a short on the wire which caused the error. However, due to the fact I was moving at the time, I could not wait for them to fix the car at that moment. They stated the vehicle was safe to drive and that I could bring the car to the new dealer once I moved to the new location. When I brought the car to the new dealer, instead of the wiring error, they stated that the radar of the car had failed. Since then, they have performed repairs on the car and the error has not yet occurred. This is a significant concern of safety due to various reasons. First, the electric parking brake is an important component of the car, as in the event of a break failure, the electric parking brake is the only backup to ensure the car can be stopped before any catastrophic event. Furthermore, according to the dealer, the actual component that has failed is the radar. However, I do not recall, at any moment, the car has warned me that the radar has failed. This could cause any reasonable person to assume the radar is functioning properly and believe that the forward collision-avoidance assist is still active with no

  • Date Complaint: 2023-09-26
  • VIN: KMHC65LC4NU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Shortly after purchasing my Ioniq (roughly 2 months into ownership) my dashboard started beeping with warning signs for my EPB and auto-hold brake. I panicked and parked my car and tried to turn off the functions because I thought I had accidentally turned them on but they wouldn’t turn off. This would continue at random for roughly 7 more months until it would stay on for weeks at a time. I was told there was nothing the dealership could do about it and was asked about my oil changes. I get my oil changes within the intervals set for the vehicle and it does not seem to affect if the lights come on or off. They beep constantly and also the EPB and Auto-hold features do not work when the light comes on, the fail. It’s a safety risk as when I do try to engage them they don’t work and makes me fearful that they will short and work at random times which is a huge concern.

  • Summary: While driving, the adaptive cruise control will randomly become disabled and 3 lights pop on: EPB, Auto Hold, and check engine (triangle with ! In the middle). Check engine light will turn off if ACC is turned of entirely. Problem will persist as long as car is on. Once turned off and restarted it will stay off for a while and then come back on. Stays off longer when car has an overnight break but other times it will happen as soon as it's turned on. Cruise control will not work when this issue appears. Picture shows milage but that was May 31st 2023, not the 1st time back in November, 2022. It happened the 1st time after a drive from Lancaster, CA to Pheonix, AZ on the return (about half way)

HUMAN DOES NOT NEED TO BE IN THE CAR FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, MEANING IT COULD OCCUR 24/7, SANS DRIVER, AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE.*** *Months of random electrical odd events. Example: the car does not know it’s off or Not shifting correctly *June 6, 2023 - 8am - I entered the car and got settled. The steering wheel is locked…it was not like that the last time I was in the car. I turned the car on, shifted to reverse, and the steering wheel remained locked. I couldn’t fix it so I decided to get out of the car and call for service. *June 6 2023 - Attempting to leave the car. Put the car in park, set the parking break, turned car off, and opened door to get out. When my left foot touched the pavement the Ioniq turn itself back on. I thought I had messed up but nope. I took several videos. I could not leave the car bc it would NOT STAY SHUT OFF. *June 6, 2023 - Called Hyundai service. They could do nothing but had service drivers out and I would get a call back, meantime I had to stay inside the running car. I kept trying the ignition button to get it to stay off. FINALLY randomly unlocked the steering wheel so I drove to the service center. *June 6, 2023 - Hyundai has had my car for 7 days without being officially written up and service started. I cannot get an update from them and have no loaner. I will be taking an UBER there tomorrow to check in person.

  • Summary: Refill Coolant warning light intermittently signals EV battery coolant problem. Hyundai dealer in Fort Wayne, IN, topped off coolant. Andrew service representative was informed of two YouTube videos explaining recall due to defective coolant ASC1 that crystalizes and/or becomes sludgy. Video reported dealer changed old coolant with an upgraded coolant ASC2 number in a Hyundai Ioniq Limited 2020 Electric Vehicle 38 kw like my vehicle. Fort Wayne, Glenbrook Hyundai dealer has very little experience or training with EV vehicles, since they offered to change the engine oil. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUs-YoGTMlw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCt6MEbaXCI are video links apparently from England due to British accent and Chippenham city mentioned in video. USA NHTSA should add this recall to USA Hyundai Ioniq 2020 38 kv EV's. Defective coolant could cause EV battery failure and potential fire due to overheating and electrical short circuits. The Refill Coolant warning light goes off indicating coolant is sufficient, even when no additional coolant was added.

  • Summary: Stopped in a right turn lane with a vehicle in front of me stopped. It 1as a right turn with a yield sign. The vehicle in front of me started turning and pulling away, I rolled forward at about 8mph and looked left. The vehicle that was in front of me had stopped after beginning to pull away. I didn't notice. I rear ended the vehicle a white newer body style town and country mini van set up with a rear wheel chair ramp like the Braun style vans. My right front of bumper close to the emblem on the hood contacted the left rear bumper of the van. I'd say the whole left side of emblem over to edge of vehicle. No airbag deployment. But the forward collision warning didn't go off and the AEB SYSTEM also did not engage. The system seems to be functioning properly. There is no warning lights on the dash. And the system has activated before, both the forward collision warning and the AEB. The following day while turning around on a dead ened street, the forward collision warning engaged the chime whenni got close to another vehicle. The system has engage early before, the dealer checked for codes a long time ago after complaining about early.or false engagements. The vehicle is stated to be inspected by hyundai this week. The current mileage is 49,000. The vehicle has never been in an accident before this. It is going in to check the electronic parking brake system as we have had faults in the auto hold system where it faults and stops working and a light does come on the dash, but doesn't store codes and resets when you cycle the key off and back on. It's been scheduled to go in before the accident. This system is in place to help stop forward collisions with pedestrians, vehicles and other objects. It failed. It could have injured someone or killed them. I also have dashcam video of the incident if this gets for enough for an investigation, I can email it.

  • Summary: On 12/25/21 less than 2 months after purchase, amber color warning lights came on dashboard saying "AUTO HOLD" and "EPB" light up on dash and a chime noise would sound when flashing message lit up. Since warning lights weren't red I understood the feature wasn't working, that it was safe to drive, but the chime was annoying when it came on about once a week. On 8/8/22 I took the car to Selma Hyundai and paid $168 to diagnose the intermittent flashing AUTO HOLD/EPB amber light alerts. They checked functions and said if persisted they would have to replace the left hand parking brake motor. On 9/8/22 I took the car again to Selma Hyundai as the problem persisted, After another diagnosis, they ordered a left rear caliper due to an open circuit. On 10/3/22 after waiting weeks for the ordered part to arrive, Selma Hyundai replaced the left rear brake caliper. On 12/20/22 I returned to Selma Hyundai for another diagnosis as the AUTO HOLD/EPB lights were again frequently alerting on the dashboard. Hyundai factory advised them to order and replace the left rear brake wiring harness. On 1/26/23 after waiting over a month for the part, Hyundai installed the new left rear wiring harness. I was now warned that the mechanic was now seeing codes from the right rear and if the alerts persist, they would have to order the right rear wiring harness. On 2/3/23 Friday evening, I was leaving my apartment with my mother to make a Costco run. Turned the car on and the AUTO HOLD/EPB lights were on and the emergency brake was flashing RED quickly on my dashboard. I turned the car off and back on with the same result. I tried to back out of my parking stall and could feel the car trying to roll back but the parking brake would not release. I tried to roll forward a bit and the parking brake would not release to let me roll. 2/6/23 Monday morning and Selma Hyundai told me to have car towed to them and they would order the right rear brake wiring harness. No wiring harness yet.
