The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common Chevrolet Sonoma problems

The Chevrolet Sonoma, a compact pickup truck, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The worst problem category for the Sonoma is accessories - interior problems, with the 1994 model year being the worst due to factors such as higher repair costs and more problems at lower mileage.

One of the most frequently reported issues is the broken 3rd door latch in the 2002 Sonoma, which has been reported three times. This problem can cost up to $1,200 to fix and typically occurs at an average mileage of 150,000 miles.

Another common problem is the failure of the alternator, which has been reported twice in the 2002 Sonoma. This issue can also be costly, with an average repair cost of $1,000 and typically occurring at an average mileage of 65,000 miles.

The fuel gauge stopping to work is also a common issue, with two reports in the 2000 Sonoma. This problem can be frustrating for drivers, as it can make it difficult to accurately gauge the amount of fuel remaining in the tank.

Interior issues are also a common problem for the Sonoma, with nine complaints overall. This includes problems such as a rip in the passenger seat and the drivers side door not opening due to the seal coming out.

The engine is another problem area for the Sonoma, with eight complaints overall. This includes issues such as the engine turning over but not starting, which can be a major inconvenience for drivers.

The fuel system is also a trouble spot for the Sonoma, with eight complaints overall. This includes problems such as the fuel pump failing, which can leave drivers stranded if it occurs while driving.

Electrical issues are also a common problem for the Sonoma, with six complaints overall. This includes problems such as the battery dying unexpectedly, which can be a major inconvenience for drivers.

The HVAC system is another area where the Sonoma has had issues, with five complaints overall. This includes problems such as the air conditioning not working, which can be a major inconvenience for drivers, especially during hot weather.

In addition to these specific problems, the Sonoma has also been known to have issues with the ABS light due to brake system control unit failure, which can be a major safety concern for drivers.

Overall, the Chevrolet Sonoma has had a number of common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues include problems with the 3rd door latch, alternator, fuel gauge, interior, engine, fuel system, electrical system, and HVAC system. These problems can be costly to fix and can be a major inconvenience for drivers. It is important for Sonoma owners to be aware of these issues and to address them promptly to ensure the safe and reliable operation of their vehicles.
