Bmw X1 sav problems

The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by German marque BMW since 2009. It is in the subcompact luxury crossover class, and the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction in 2009, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up, below the X3 prior to the launch of the smaller X2. The X1 essentially is aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.

The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman. Despite its name, it is now only the second smallest SUV produced by BMW since the introduction of the X2. The third and current generation was released in 2022.

First generation (E84; 2009)

The E84 X1 is the first-generation model and was originally presented as the BMW Concept X1 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Development of the vehicle started in 2006 when BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up as petrol prices were increasing. Due to the urgent need to produce the vehicle, development and pre-production time was shortened by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.

It is based on the same platform as the E90 3 Series and features the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive). It was not introduced to the United States until 2012.

In 2013, the E84 X1 underwent a facelift, featuring restyled exterior and interior design elements, as well as the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics on all models. The original X1 sold 820,529 units.

Common Bmw X1 sav problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the BMW X1, several common problems have been reported with the SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Engine Overheating: Some BMW X1 models, particularly those equipped with the N20 engine, have experienced engine overheating issues. This problem is often linked to coolant leaks or evaporation, leading to difficulties in cooling the engine. Owners have traced the leak to the radiator or failing seals, causing potential overheating concerns.
  2. Oil Leaks: Owners have reported oil leaks in BMW X1 vehicles, which can lead to various issues if not addressed promptly. Oil leaks can result from multiple factors, such as gasket failures or degraded seals, impacting the engine's performance and longevity.
  3. Brake Vacuum Pump Failures: Certain BMW X1 models from 2009 to 2016 have been susceptible to brake vacuum pump failures. These failures can reduce braking power, posing safety risks for drivers. BMW issued recalls to address these brake-related issues and ensure the safety of affected vehicles.
  4. Engine Mount Issues: Owners of second-generation BMW X1 models, particularly those from 2016 to 2018, have reported problems with engine mounts coming loose. This issue can cause significant vibrations and shaking in the vehicle, affecting driving comfort and potentially leading to further damage if not resolved.
  5. Timing Chain Problems: Some BMW X1 vehicles with N20 and N26 engines, especially those from 2009 to 2016, have experienced timing chain issues. These problems often involve failures in the oil pump chain, resulting in sudden power loss and potential engine shutdown. Owners have described these failures as abrupt and severe, requiring immediate attention.
  6. Turbocharger Waste Gate Actuator Issues: Issues with the turbocharger waste gate actuator have been reported in BMW X1 models. Malfunctions in this component can affect engine performance and efficiency, leading to reduced power output and potential drivability issues.
  7. Airbag Problems: BMW X1 vehicles have faced airbag-related issues, prompting recalls to address safety concerns. Problems with airbag modules and deployment mechanisms have been reported, emphasizing the importance of ensuring proper airbag functionality for driver and passenger safety.

These common problems with the BMW X1 SAV cars highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and manufacturer recalls to address safety and performance issues effectively. Owners are advised to stay vigilant, address any reported issues promptly, and follow manufacturer guidelines for vehicle maintenance to ensure a safe and reliable driving experience.

What is the common problem in BMW X1?

Oil leaks are a common concern in some BMW X1s. These leaks can be attributed to gasket failures or other engine-related issues, such as a leaking oil filter housing gasket or valve cover gasket. Solution: To address oil leaks, it's essential to have the gaskets and seals inspected and replaced as needed.

What are the disadvantages of the BMW X1?

BMW X1 Cons

Missing features such as ventilated seats, head-up display, full-size spare tyre (has a space saver tyre), 360-degree camera, rear sunshade etc.

Is the BMW X1 a reliable car?

There should be few things to worry about with the BMW X1. In our annual What Car? Reliability Survey it placed 10th out of 34 cars in the family SUV class, with the petrol-engined cars achieving a great score of 95%. That was below the Skoda Karoq and the Volvo XC40 but above the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLE.

How long will a BMW X1 engine last?

Almost any BMW has the potential to run for up to 200,000 or even 250,000 miles with proper maintenance–and there are always going to be outliers that go further. Since every new BMW includes complimentary factory-recommended maintenance through BMW Ultimate Care, it's easy to start off on the right foot.

  • VIN: WBXHU7C3XH5
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: AUTOMATIC TAILGATE MALFUNCTIONS. TOE KICK FUNCTIONS RESPOND ERRATICALLY 50% OF THE TIME. THE TAILGATE HAS CLOSED ON MY HEAD WHILE LOADING/UNLOADING. IT HAS OPENED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. IT HAS OPENED ONLY HALFWAY AND STALLED WHILE STATIONARY, AND MORE IMPORTANT IT HAS STALLED HALFWAY WHILE CLOSING. I RECENTLY PRESSED THE CLOSE BUTTON AND DROVE OFF WITH THE TAILGATE HALF CLOSED, AND DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL SOMEONE BEHIND ME BLEW THE HORN. ITEMS IN THE CARGO AREA COULD TUMBLE TO THE HIGHWAY AND CREATE A POSSIBLE HAZARD. IT HAS BEEN IN THE BMW SERVICE DEPART 6 TO 8 TIMES AND INSPECTED AT LEAST TWICE BY SOMEONE FROM BMW OF N. AMERICA. INASMUCH AS IT IS ERRATIC THEY CLAIM THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. I CONTEND IT IS AN INCONVENIENCE WHICH SHOULD BE CORRECTED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IT COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. THERE IS EVIDENCE TO BE FOUND ON THE INTERNET OF OTHER OWNERS HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES. I HAVE HAD A SUBDURAL HEMATOMA AND THE TAILGATE CLOSING ON MY HEAD IS NO SMALL CONCERN. BMW REFUSES TO ADMIT THE PROBLEM EXISTS AND HAS SHOWN INDIFFERENCE. THE ISSUE CONTINUES TO PERSIST.

  • VIN: WBXHT3C33G5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
  • Summary: WHEN I EXTEND THE PASSENGER SEAT ALL THE WAY TO THE BACK, THE FUSE BLOWS UP. THERE ARE SPARKS UNDER THE SEAT. AFTER THAT ALL THE BUTTONS TOWARDS PASSENGER SEAT ARE NOT RESPONSIVE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER SAME DAY AND THEY FIXED IT ON THE SAME DAY BY REPLACING THE FUSE. AS SOON AS I GOT THE CAR, I TRIED EXTENDING THE SEAT AND FUSE BLOWS UP AGAIN. THE DEALER TOOK IT FOR 2 WEEKS, CHECKS IT AND JUST RETURNS IT SAYING THE FAULTY WIRE HAS BEEN TRIMMED AND ADVISED ME NOT TO ADJUST THE SEAT. THEY DID NOT GIVE ME ANY PERMANENT SOLUTION. WHEN I CONTACTED BMW CUSTOMER SERVICE REGARDING THIS MATTER, I GOT THE SAME RESPONSE ADVISING ME NOT TO ADJUST THE SEAT. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE. IT HAD 24K MILES WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE ISSUE IS NOT RESOLVED AS OF TODAY.

  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: OCCASIONALLY WHEN THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL IS ACTIVE, THE COLLISION WARNING WILL LIGHT AND THE BRAKES AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NOTHING IN FRONT OF THE CAR. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON A STRAIGHT, FLAT ROAD WITH NO SHADOWS, UNDULATIONS, OR CARS ANYWHERE IN SIGHT. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD SINCE IT HAS HAPPENED WITH CARS TRAVELING IMMEDIATELY BEHIND ME AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. BMW TECHS CANNOT ID THE PROBLEM AND SAY THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IT. THE PROBLEM IS INFREQUENT AND HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO OCCUR DURING A TEST DRIVE. MET TODAY WITH A BMW NA TECHNICAL SERVICE EXPERT WHO INSISTED THAT I WAS 'CONFUSING' THIS PROBLEM WITH THE SYSTEM'S NORMAL OPERATION. NOT SO. MY LEASE ENDS IN 2 MONTHS AND I DON'T WANT THE NEXT OWNER TO GET RAMMED FROM BEHIND.

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WBXHT3C32G5
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: ON 10/28, MY DAUGHTER WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL OFFSET HEAD ON COLLISION WITH A CHEVY SILVERADO. THE IMPACT OCCURRED INSIDE OF A TURNING LANE WHERE THE CHEVY WAS TRAVELING APPROX. 15 MPH, AND MY DAUGHTER BEGAN ACCELERATING OUT OF THE TURN LANE AT 5-10MPH WHEN THEY COLLIDED. THE SILVERADO'S AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, THE BMWS DID NOT. NO FRONT AIRBAGS OR KNEE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. SHE HIT HER HEAD ON THE STEERING WHEEL, WHILE WEARING HER SEATBELT, SO THIS ALSO BEGS THE QUESTION, WHY THE SEATBELT PRETENSIONERS DID NOT HOLD HER BACK FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. BMW 'S ALSO COME EQUIPPED WITH EMERGENCY FLASHERS UPON ACCIDENT, THAT DID NOT HAPPEN EITHER. MY IMPRESSION IS THAT NONE OF THE BMW SAFETY SYSTEMS WENT INTO EFFECT DURING THIS COLLISION. BMW ASSIST ALSO NEVER CALLED, WHICH AGAIN IS ANOTHER TOUTED BMW SAFETY SYSTEM IN ALL THEIR CARS.

  • VIN: WBXHT3C35H5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: X1 WITH COMFORT ACCESS PACKAGE. POWER TAILGATE OFTEN CLOSES UNPROMPTED WHEN PUTTING GROCERIES ECT IN THE BACK OF THE PARKED CAR. CLOSED TWICE WHILE I WAS CHANGING A TODDLER'S DIAPER IN THE BACK ALMOST HITTING ME AND HER. BOTH FEET WERE FIRMLY ON THE GROUND WHEN IT HAPPENED AND NOBODY WAS TOUCHING THE KEY. LUCKILY IT BEEPS BEFORE CLOSING BUT IT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY IF CAUGHT IN THE CLOSING DOOR. THE TAILGATE ALSO OPENS AT RANDOM TIMES JUST WHEN WALKING PAST THE REAR OF THE PARKED CAR. THE DEALERSHIP TRIED TO BLAME BOTH ISSUES ON ME INADVERTENTLY PRESSING THE KEY, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED TOO MANY TIMES SINCE I ORIGINALLY REPORTED IT TO MY SALESMAN ONE MONTH AFTER PURCHASE. BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME, THE DEALER SAID THEY CAN'T REPLICATE IT AND IT IS MY FAULT. A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH INDICATES THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ON THE X1 FOR THOSE WITH COMFORT ACCESS.
