Acura Mdx type s problems
The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.
First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

Common Acura Mdx type s problems
The Acura MDX is a popular luxury SUV known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it has had its share of common problems over the years. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints:
- Check Engine and Flashing 'D4' Light: This combination typically indicates a problem with the all-wheel drive (AWD) system, specifically the transfer case or driveshaft. It could be a faulty sensor, actuator, or mechanical issue within the AWD system.
- Vibration or Shudder While Driving: Drivetrain imbalance, unevenly worn tires, misaligned wheels, faulty CV axles, or worn engine mounts can cause vibrations while driving between 35 and 40 mph.
- Torque Converter Issues: A failing torque converter in the automatic transmission can also cause shuddering. A worn-out torque converter clutch can break apart, sending debris into the transmission fluid and causing internal damage, leading to slipping, grinding, or complete transmission failure.
- Gas Tank Issues: Some MDX models have been recalled for fuel tank leaks or faulty fuel-sending units. If you suspect a gas tank issue, getting your car checked immediately is crucial due to the fire risk.
- Engine Problems: This is a broad category, and the specific problem will depend on the symptoms and diagnostic codes. It could range from minor sensor issues to major engine repairs.
- Automatic Transmission Issues: This covers many problems, from shifting issues and rough gear changes to slipping or complete transmission failure. The specific cause will need to be diagnosed by a mechanic.
- EGR Valve or EVAP Solenoid Issues: The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve and Evaporative Emission (EVAP) solenoid are emissions control system components. When malfunctioning, they can trigger the Check Engine light and cause rough running or stalling.
The worst year for the Acura MDX is considered to be the model year 2001 to 2005 due to transmission failure issues, making these model years the most unreliable in the lineup. It is essential to research the specific model year and potential problems before purchasing a used Acura MDX to ensure a reliable and trouble-free ownership experience.
What is the major problem of Acura MDX?
Acura MDX owners have reported problems with their air conditioning systems, including issues with refrigerant leaks, compressor failure, and inadequate cooling. Regular maintenance of the air conditioning system—such as refrigerant level checks and cleaning of the condenser—can help prevent these issues.
Is the Acura MDX a reliable vehicle?
Acura ranks high in reliability, with notable safety and fuel efficiency ratings and low average repair costs for a luxury brand. RepairPal places Acura second among car brands for reliability, highlighting its low chance of severe repairs and lower-than-average repair costs, making it a cost-effective luxury option.
Is the MDX Type S fast?
It's not exactly a rocket ship, however. At our test track, the Type S accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. That's quicker than the standard MDX (7.5 seconds) but still a bit slower than a comparable Audi Q7 or Genesis GV80. Around turns, the Type S feels sportier and more secure than the standard MDX.
How many miles can a Acura MDX last?
250,000 to 300,000 miles
MotorAsk.com – “Acuras can last anywhere from 250,000 to 300,000 miles with proper maintenance. According to Acura owners, some of the brand's vehicles can even last 400,000 miles or more in ideal conditions and with a responsible owner… one Acura MDX was reported with 946,252 miles,”

- Summary: The All Wheel Drive of my 2022 MDX has been going out in the rear, and only the front wheels are powered. This happens nearly every time I drive the vehicle for the last 2 months, at least. My safety is at risk because I live in Montana and the roads have been getting icy with current weather conditions. When the AWD drive gives out, I lose all power briefly as the front tried to regain power. Going up mountains with this issue is very dangerous. It also goes out in "snow" mode. I have sent the Acura warranty department numerous photos, via email, of the error message as well as videos of the message popping up. I also started a log of the error as of 11/09/23. I live over 400 miles from the closest Acura dealership. I asked if the local Honda dealership can look at it and after over a week of waiting to hear back, was told I needed to take it to Acura. I refuse to drive it over 400 miles in winter conditions. I asked for it to be towed to Acura last Monday, 11/20/23, and have yet to hear back. The warning message reads, "All Wheel Drive system problem. Only front wheels may be powered, see your dealer." Additional, snall rocks from snow protection keep getting stuck between the break rotors and the back plate. It causes a loud screeching sound until the rocks are dislodged. The rear brakes now sweak.

- Summary: Twice earlier in the year as I was pulling into a parking spot the brakes seemed to have failed, car auto accelerated, but was stopped by a parking block. Air suspension warning light was on, car was evaluated three times 6/2023-8/2023, air suspension sensor replaced, Acura reported car was otherwise fine. One week following last evaluation car again auto accelerated, was stopped by parking block. The car again auto accelerated one month later, this time into cement wall, air bags deployed. Issue only happens when coming to a stop, very sporadic and rare, but obviously dangerous.

- Summary: I am writing to report a significant issue concerning a leak in the transfer case of my 2022 Acura MDX Type S, VIN: [XXX] . This malfunction poses a potential safety risk to myself and other road users. 1.Component Malfunction: •The malfunction occurred in the transfer case of the vehicle. Yes, the transfer case is available for inspection upon request. 2.Safety Risks: •The leak could potentially lead to inadequate lubrication within the drivetrain, causing it to malfunction while driving, which might result in loss of control or an accident. 3.Problem Confirmation: •The problem has been confirmed by an authorized Acura dealer, who identified the leak and proposed either a seal replacement or a complete transfer case replacement as potential solutions. 4.Inspections: •The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer and is scheduled for a follow-up inspection to ascertain whether the seal replacement resolves the issue. As of now, no inspections have been conducted by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. 5.Warning Signs: •There were no warning lamps or messages indicating a problem. However, I was advised of the leak when the car was on the lift for a tire change, which prompted a further investigation. This issue raises concerns about the potential safety risks not only to myself but to other drivers on the road. I am worried that others with the same vehicle model might experience similar problems, which could lead to dangerous situations if not addressed promptly. - Date Of Incident: 2023-07-12
- Date Complaint: 2023-09-13
- VIN: 5J8YD8H92NL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving and happened multiple times, vehicle senses phantom objects or nothing at all but hard brakes on its own which also causes the seat belt to tug on abdomen (wife was pregnant at the time, unfortunately had a miscarriage at 14 weeks which could have been a cause). After the second time, the forward facing camera was replaced per Honda/Acura technical support. Once camera was replace vehicle would hard brake on it's own again which lead me to installing a dash cam to have proof which I provided to service to share with their technical support. In response they came back with vehicle is performing as designed and claiming the dash cam can be interfering with the system (BS!!) Since then, my wife refuses to sit in the car and I only drive it one a week for a short errand.

- Summary: Vehicle experienced reduced power and many alarm messages came up. I pulled to the side of the road to get out of traffic. I turned off the engine and attempted to restart, the engine would run for 5 seconds and then shutdown. I learned later that the turbo outlet hose had become detached from the hose fitting. It was under the motor and only accessible when the vehicle was on a hoist. The real reason for my complaint is that with the engine unable to stay running, the transmission could not be shifted to neutral and there is no shift lock feature to manually put the transmission in neutral either. So, if I had been stuck in traffic when the engine lost power, there would have been no way to push or tow the vehicle to a safe place. This seems like a function that would be important to have on a vehicle.
