Nissan Nv problems

nissan logo

The Nissan NV (Nissan Van) is a full-size van produced by Nissan from 2011 to 2021. It was developed and marketed for the United States and Canada, where Nissan had not previously been present in the full-size segment. Until the introduction of the Nissan NV, Mexico was the only country in North America selling a full-size Nissan van, as the Nissan Urvan was sold there.

The NV nameplate was previously used by a small pickup truck sold in Thailand.

Development

The NV used the same F-Alpha platform as does the Nissan Titan full-size pickup, but due to the need for a flat loading floor it is highly modified and they end up sharing mainly powertrain pieces and some of the design language. The NV was also only available with rear-wheel drive, coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission (later also a seven-speed). The NV was not targeted directly at the (mainly fleet) buyers of the Ford E-Series and Chevrolet Express, but rather at private buyers including contractors and small business owners who are looking for a vehicle that is both capable and comfortable.

The 4.0-litre V6 engine outputs 261 hp (195 kW) and 281 lb⋅ft (381 N⋅m) of torque, while the 5.6-litre V8 engine outputs 375 hp (280 kW) and 387 lb⋅ft (525 N⋅m) of torque. The V8-engined versions are also electronically limited to a top speed of 100 mph (161 km/h).

Common Nissan Nv problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Nissan NV cars, common problems with these vehicles include:

  • Catalytic Converter Failure: Another common problem is premature failure of the catalytic converter. When this component fails, it can be expensive to replace, impacting both performance and emissions control of the vehicle.
  • Tire Wear and Alignment Issues: Some models, like the 2013 Nissan NV200, have experienced problems with tire wear, including cupping and premature wear. These issues can lead to additional maintenance costs and affect the vehicle's handling and safety on the road.
  • Sliding Door Problems: The Nissan NV200 has been reported to have faulty sliding doors that can get stuck due to dirt and debris accumulation, leading to operational issues and potential safety hazards.
  • Airbag and Seat Belt Recalls: Certain models have been subject to recalls related to airbag and seat belt issues. Faulty Occupant Classification Systems (OCS) can incorrectly classify occupants, potentially leading to airbag deployment failures in the event of a collision.
  • Electrical Issues: Owners have reported various electrical problems, including random warning lights, door sensor malfunctions, and other electrical failures that can impact the vehicle's overall performance and safety.
  • Braking System Faults: Some Nissan NV Cargo vans have experienced braking system issues, which can compromise the vehicle's ability to stop efficiently and safely, posing a significant risk on the road.
  • Leaking Problems: Leaks have been reported in some Nissan NV Cargo models, which can lead to water damage, interior issues, and potential safety hazards if not addressed promptly.

These common problems highlight the importance of thorough research and inspection when considering a Nissan NV vehicle to ensure a reliable and safe driving experience.

  • VIN: 5BZAF0AA3HN
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: On July 4, 2023 I was backing out of a driveway and put my vehicle back into Drive. A piece out of the steering column fell at my feet. I pulled back into the driveway and could not get the vehicle to shift into park to be able to remove the keys from the ignition. We used the emergency brake. The cover had to be removed from the column and a piece was found to have stripped. We made a makeshift piece to hold it together to shift the vehicle into park and remove the keys. The white piece in the picture had a steel bolt that had stripped the aluminum housing threads and both had fallen out. They helped control the shifting. Nissan was contacted and they agreed to cover half of the repair. This should have been completely covered since it is not an item that can be covered by a warranty and never should have failed in the first place.

Although we had a negative experience with our previous truck due to persistent electronic problems, we were fortunate to have a dealer who worked with us to find a better solution. We are now driving a used Sprinter high top, which has already proven to be an improvement.

Latest positive Nissan Nv car reviews

  1. Jimmy Gutkowski 2024-05-24

    Vehicle year: 2013

When it came to choosing a cargo van, I did my research and looked at various options such as the Promaster, Transit, and Sprinter, both new and used. After careful consideration, I decided on a used 2013 NV2500 high roof v6 SV with 73K, now 109K. For me, reliability was the most important factor, and I found that buying a used NV was still a more reliable option than buying any of the other three new. I took the time to read real consumer reviews from people who have lived with these vans for years, rather than just relying on professional car journalists who test them for a day. It was clear to me that the Promaster and Transit had significant issues, while the Sprinter was more expensive and offered less. Whenever I see a fellow cargo van owner in a parking lot, I always ask them what they think of their vehicle, and I've learned a lot from these conversations. In my experience, the NV has been incredibly reliable, with only a few minor maintenance items needed such as a belt idler pulley, accessory belt, air filter, and oil changes. It has great heat in the winter and great A/C in the summer, and I can even stand up in the rear. It's so convenient that I use it as both my work vehicle and my everyday car. I've towed up to 6K pounds and barely noticed the weight. My usual cargo is about 1500 pounds, and even with that weight, I still get 20mpg on the highway. The SV version also has some nice upgrades such as cruise control and audio controls on the steering wheel. Overall, I've been extremely satisfied with my NV and have never had a vehicle that I could drive for 6 hours without any discomfort.I recently made some modifications to my van, including installing a factory leather steering wheel, adding a 'double' seat from the rear of a Transit to the front (which now allows for 3 across seating), and extending the overhead front shelf by about 2ft to add more storage space. The van is easy to maintain, with a large engine bay and hood that make checking fluids, changing oil, and replacing belts a breeze. While the van may look a bit long and unusual, the benefits of the modifications far outweigh the downsides. I typically get 20mpg on the highway and 15mpg in the city, although traffic congestion can sometimes affect my fuel efficiency. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and would buy again if I needed another van. It's worth noting that the NV1500/2500/3500 may no longer be available after 2021. As of June 2021, my van has 120K miles and I have not experienced any issues since my last review, although I do have a slow leak in the differential that I have yet to resolve.
