Kia Borrego problems
The Kia Mohave, marketed in North America and China as the Kia Borrego, is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia. The vehicle debuted in 2008 in the South Korean and U.S. markets. The Kia Borrego is named after the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California; Borrego means "bighorned sheep" which can be found in the state park.
First generation (HM; 2008)
Production history
The production model, designed by automotive designer Peter Schreyer, former chief designer for Audi, was introduced at the 2008 North American International Auto Show. The vehicle was originally shown as a concept car under the Kia Mesa name at the 2005 North American International Auto Show and went on sale in Korea as the Mohave prior to its release in the United States. In the US, the Borrego went on hiatus for the 2010 model year, with no word on its return or cancellation, after lower than expected sales in 2009. Kia, however, still continued selling the Borrego in Canada, meaning the Borrego was a Canada-only nameplate from 2010–2011. Domestic versions of the Mohave do not wear any Kia badges, instead using a version of the Kia Opirus's logo, due to their status as Kia's flagship models.
As of October 28, 2011, the model was discontinued with the Sorento as a successor, except the Middle East, China, Central Asia, Brazil, Chile and Russia. It was later dropped from the Chinese and Brazilian markets.

- Summary: Air bag - During a bad rain storm a couple years ago I had an accident and hit the center divider after entering the freeway going 50 mph instead of 65 mph and none of my airbags deployed. I let my insurance know as well as the repair shop but it is UNKNOWN if they actually checked. The light on my dash showed my airbags were on. Engine- My engine started to make a rattling noise that sounds like a diesel vehicle starting up during a cold starts. I have took it to the dealership I bought it from multiple times cause it has gotten louder and worst they claimed the looked at it and said that it was normal and decided to max out my GAP insurance so I can no longer take it in for that issue but my normal mechanic states that is not normal and it should not be making that noise. There were no lights or warning signs of any sort.

- Summary: I absolutely love my kia borrego and have been trying to find a way to give the car back and end payments on it because I can't afford to put parts on it anymore. I'm on disability and can't seem to find the real issue after thousands of dollars in failed attempts. My transmission has not been shifting and if it does shift, it's sudden and aggressive. It will rev up higher than normal and if you continue holding the gas at all it will jerk you as you are driving. It has nearly caused me to swerve or be hit by anyone following. It feels like someone hits the car from behind very hard. Not only is it scary, it is aggressive and could cause whiplash or harm to my children. On 3 occasions I have been driving and my seat belt has randomly popped off on the driver seat and twice in the passenger seat. It's awful I have to plan where I will park or my route because my car randomly shuts off while driving which is dangerous on the curvy roads where I live and the car mostly doesn't shift at all while driving after all the money I've wasted trying to have it fixed. This car was the best thing that I have ever owned until it became a dangerous, unreliable nightmare.

- Summary: I was driving in traffic with stop light coming up hit my brakes to slow down because of cars in front of me, I had no brakes/ no warning lights on dash. I pumped my brakes and was able to stop before hitting car in front of me. Local shop said master cylinder so I took it to local shop that repairs my car the last few years, they replaced Kia master cylinder, still no brake, replaced Kia brake booster, still no brakes, sent master cylinder back and reordered another new kia one it was put on and no brakes, had it towed to shop in Charlotte NC , no codes reading for problem so they said it must be the module accuator assembly. No mechanic knows what's wrong with my brakes because nothing can relay to their diagnostic machines. I have spent over about 13 hundred dollars so far and there is no way to find out what's wrong other than replace the entire brake system from wheels inward to the brake assembly and up to the booster and master cylinder because the brake assembly is not relaying any codes. I could of been in a bad accident because of my brakes failing.

In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

I would have definitely bought another one if they were available. I had to replace this car when it reached about 170,000 miles as it was starting to need expensive repairs. Unfortunately, one problem with Kia is that parts are often only available from Kia and they can be very expensive and difficult to find.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Kia that I bought back in August of '09. At the time, I was debating between this and the Pilot, but I'm so glad I went with the Kia. It's been a whole year now and I haven't had a single problem with it. I'm getting about 17/18 mpg, which is pretty good considering the size of the SUV. The 3rd row is great and there's plenty of leg room for kids, although it can be a little tight for adults. I also added running boards and a nav system for much cheaper than if I had bought the limited version that comes with one. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable SUV!

The front panel is missing an indicator for burned lights. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if any of the light bulbs are burnt or not coming on.

I'm so glad to hear that you bought a Kia yesterday! I heard that there were some great markdowns on 09 models, and it sounds like you got a fantastic deal. The sticker price was $33,075, but you were able to get it out the door for just $26,000 - that's amazing! From what you've said, it sounds like you're really enjoying your new vehicle. The interior is very nice, and the overall look is awesome. The V6 has great power on the highway - even V8 SUVs can't touch it! The only issue you mentioned was the low end torque and weird shift points of the automatic, but it still sounds like it's just what your family needed. I just purchased the Borrego and I absolutely love it! Even though I never thought I would own a vehicle without an American emblem on the front, I have to say that this car has exceeded my expectations. I used to feel a little guilty about it, but a few days of driving it through a foot of snow up and down our mountainous driveway took care of that. Living in the mountains of WV, a real 4-wheel drive is a must-have for some people, and the Borrego delivers. It has great pick-up, a smooth ride, and is incredibly roomy. I didn't choose it for the gas mileage, as I only live 2 miles from work. I originally tried to buy a Traverse, but the pricing was way out of line for what you get. The Borrego, on the other hand, has all the amenities I was looking for, especially the leather seat package.

Hi there! I've had my Borrego for two weeks now and unfortunately, I've had a few issues with the radio. The Sirius Satellite Radio wasn't working when I first got it, but the dealership replaced it. However, during the replacement, some of the trim and interior got damaged, which was a bit frustrating. Today, I tried turning on the radio and it wouldn't work at all, which is definitely not what I was hoping for. It's a bit of a hassle for me to go to the dealership since it's an 80 mile round trip, and this will be my fourth visit since purchasing the vehicle. Despite all this, I'm hoping for a more positive update in the future!
