Common Ford E450 problems
The Ford E-450 is a popular choice for commercial vehicles and motorhomes, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from E-450 owners:
- Battery Drain: Another common problem with the E-450 is battery drain. If the vehicle sits for more than a few weeks, the chassis battery may go dead. This issue seems to be particularly prevalent in Class C motorhomes on E-450 chassis. Some owners have installed battery tenders to maintain the charge, while others have installed blade-type cutoff switches on the negative terminal to prevent discharge. However, even with these measures, some owners have reported hearing a "little motor" starting up underneath the air cleaner box, which may be a blower door moving around. Unhooking the battery every time the vehicle is parked is not always a practical solution, as it can lead to adaptive learning loss and the appearance of diagnostic trouble codes.
- Engine V-10 Check: Some E-450 owners have reported problems with the engine V-10 check. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty fuel filters, fuel pumps, and sensors. One possible cause is the P0300 and P0302 codes, which can indicate a misfire in cylinder 2. These codes can be caused by faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. A qualified mechanic can help diagnose and fix these issues.
- Hot Floor: Another common issue with the E-450 is a hot passenger side floorboard, particularly on long rides. This problem is caused by the exhaust pipe on that side of the vehicle. Some owners have tried wrapping the exhaust pipe to alleviate the issue, but this may not be a practical solution for everyone. It is important to address this issue, as a hot floorboard can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous for passengers.
In conclusion, while the Ford E-450 is a reliable and popular vehicle, it is not immune to common problems. Owners may experience issues with the check engine light, battery drain, engine V-10 check, and hot floorboards. Addressing these issues promptly can help prevent more serious problems down the line and ensure the safe and comfortable operation of the vehicle.
How long do E450 engines last?
These engines will last a few hundred thousand miles if taken care of. We have a 2005 E450 V10 with a 113,000 miles, the last 60K towing a car. Burns no oil, quiet as a mouse at idle. But I change oil every 5-6000 miles, change transmission fluid every 30,000 and follow the maintenance schedule as best I can.
What is the steering problem with the Ford E450?
In February 2022, Ford recalled an estimated 44,219 of the E-350 and E-450 vehicles for a sudden loss of power steering fluid that can result in a loss of power steering and power brake assist, increasing the risk of a crash, NHTSA said.
Is the Ford V10 a good motorhome engine?
The V10 is regarded as strong and reliable, and you can find it in the F-250 and F-350, the Excursion large SUV manufactured between 2000 and 2005, or the F53 motorhome. Hot rodders have used the Triton to power their souped-up creations, custom off-road vehicles, and standalone generators.
