Dodge Van problems

The Dodge Ram Van (also known as the Dodge B-series) is a range of full-size vans that were produced by Chrysler Corporation from the 1971 to 2003 model years. Replacing the Dodge A100, the Ram Van transitioned to a front-engine drivetrain configuration. Mostly offered as a cargo van and a passenger van, the model line was also initially offered as a cutaway van chassis.

The B-series van line was produced across 32 years of production, making it among the longest-lived platform designs in American automotive history. Much of the exterior and chassis underpinnings saw only gradual changes during their entire production, with three distinct generations developed. Alongside its use by Dodge, the full-size van range saw rebranding during the 1970s for both Fargo Trucks and Plymouth (marking the debut of the Plymouth Voyager nameplate).

For much of its entire production run, Chrysler produced B-platform vans at the now-demolished Pillette Road Truck Assembly plant in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; prior to 1980, the model line was also produced at Saint Louis North Assembly (Fenton, Missouri). In 2003, the Dodge Sprinter (a rebranding of its Mercedes-Benz namesake) was introduced, replacing the B-series van entirely from 2004 to 2009. Since 2014, the Ram division has offered the ProMaster to the full-size van market, a rebranded Fiat Ducato.

Common Dodge Van problems

Based on complaints from owners of Dodge van cars, here are some common problems associated with these vehicles:

  1. Transmission Issues:
    • Transmission problems are a significant complaint among Dodge van owners. Issues include transmission failure, a short in the transaxle control module, and successful forward shift followed by a lockup. These problems can lead to dangerous driving conditions and costly repairs.
  2. Engine Problems:
    • Engine-related issues are another common complaint. Problems like complete engine failure, the check engine light constantly turning on while driving, and engines that won't start have been reported. Engine failures can be costly, dangerous, and inconvenient, affecting the overall performance of the vehicle.
  3. Interior Accessory Issues:
    • Dodge van owners have reported problems with interior accessories. These issues can range from power door lock failure to issues with the key and internal switch causing door locks to malfunction. Malfunctioning accessories can impact the convenience and safety of the vehicle.
  4. Coolant Leaks:
    • Coolant leaks from the underbody of Dodge vans, especially those equipped with a rear heat/AC system, are common. Failure to replace hoses regularly can lead to coolant leaks, affecting the vehicle's performance and potentially causing overheating issues.
  5. Starting Issues Because of Key:
    • Starting problems related to the key assembly have been reported by Dodge van owners. Inability to release the key from the ignition or start the vehicle can indicate issues with the key assembly or lock cylinder, requiring replacement to resolve the problem.
  6. Noise in Front Suspension:
    • Owners have reported hearing clunking or rattling noises from the front suspension during low-speed motion. This noise may indicate worn-out sway bar end links or sway bar bushings, affecting the vehicle's stability and ride comfort.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise with Dodge van cars to ensure safe and reliable operation.

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-08-08
  • Date Complaint: 2017-08-08
  • VIN: 2B6KB31Z6WK
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: ON AUG. 8, 2017 I WAS DRIVING A LEVEL 2 LANE SECLUDED ASPHALT ROAD IN MY 1998 DODGE CAMPER VAN. THE VAN IS DODGE 3500 EXTENDED MODEL, MODIFIED BY SPORTSMOBILE INTO A CAMPER VAN IN 1999. AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 50 MPH SUDDENLY A LOUD NOISE OCCURRED AND PIECE OF TIRE BEGAN TO FLY OFF. THE TIRES HAS BEEN RECENTLY ROTATED AND PRESSURE ADJUSTED TO ABOUT 80 PSI BY LES SCHWAB TIRES. WE HAD BEEN ON A ROAD TRIP SO I CHECKED TIRE INFLATION ABOUT EVERY DAY. THE TIRE TREAD HAD DISINTEGRATED AND PART OF IT HAD FLOWN OFF BUT THE TIRE WAS STILL INFLATED (AND STILL IS). ABOUT A QUARTER OF THE TREAD IS GONE. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC AND WE WERE ABLE TO PULL OVER AND REPLACE THE TIRE. HOWEVER UNDER NORMAL HIGHWAY DRIVING AND ESPECIALLY IF THE TIRE HAD BEEN IN FRONT I BELIEVE I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND THE VAN WOULD LIKELY ROLLED.

  • Date Of Incident: 1977-11-23
  • Date Complaint: 2016-06-09
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I PURCHASED 1977 DODGE VAN. NEW IN 1977. THE HEADLINER CONSTANTLY FELL DOWN ON ME. THE TRANSMISSION WAS THE FIRST YEAR USING A LOCK OUT TORQUE CONVERTER. BUT CHRYSLER DID NOT USE A BRACE FOR THE SHAFT, SO THE SHAFT WOBBLE EVERY TIME IT ENGAGED AND DISENGAGED AND DESTROYED MY TRANSMISSION AT 12,500 MILES. IT HAD A 12,000 MILE WARRENTY AND CHRYSLER WOULD NOT REPAIR. I HAD TO PAY TO FIX IT. THE ENGINE BLEW UPO AT 13,000 MILES, AND THE MECHANIC SHOWED ME THE CYLANERS HAD INDENTATIONS IN THEM., HE SAID THE WORKERS ARE UPSET WITH CHRYSLER AND ARE SABATOGING THE VEHICLES. IT LOOKS LIKE THEY BANGED THE JUGS WITH A BALLPEEN HAMER, AS HE FOUND THE HAMMER IN THE DRIVERSIDE DOOR, THAT WAS MAKING A RATTLING SOUND. THE HEAD OF HE HAMMER FIT THE INDENTS IN THE JUGS PERFECTLY. THE DAY I BOUGHT IT IT STOPPED RUNNING 60 MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP. THE ELECTRONIC IGNITION BOX WAS BAD. BECAUSE I WAS MORE THAN 50 MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED IT FROM, I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE IT TOWED BACK INTO THE SHOP. ABOUT 1 HOUR AND 20 MINUTES AFTER I DROVE OFF THE LOT. THIS VAN WAS HORRIBLE. CHRYSLER DID NOT HELP AT ALL BECAUSE I WAS 500-1000 MILES BEYOND THE 12,000 MILE WARRENTY. >THE METAL IN THE VAN STARTED TO RUST AFTER 8 MONTHS. CHRYSLER SAID I WAS NOT COVERED BECAUSE ON OF THE WHEEL WELL WELD WAS LEAKING, WATER CAME INTO THE VAN THRU IT FROM OUTSIDE... BUT, IT RUSTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT , SO I WAS NOT COVERED. I HATE CHRYSLER.

  • Summary: THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 1998 - 2000 DODGE CARAVAN/VOYAGERS. THE HOUSING UNIT THAT HOUSES THE STRUTS, MOST TIMES ON THE LEFT, DRIVER'S SIDE RUSTS AND CORRODES, CAUSING THE STRUT TO BREAK THROUGH. AT THIS POINT, THE DRIVER COULD HIT A BUMP, (THIS HAS HAPPENED TO SOME PEOPLE) AND THE STRUT CAN ACTUALLY BREAK THROUGH THE DASHBOARD OR WINDSHIELD WHILE DRIVING! CURRENTLY, ON MY VEHICLE, THE STRUT HAS BROKEN THROUGH THE HOUSING UNIT. IT IS APPROXIMATELY $300 TO FIX. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH CHRYSLER, AND THEY HAVE CREATED A KIT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. DUE TO THIS FACT, THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY RECALL; OR AT LEAST PROVIDE MONETARY ASSISTANCE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. COMMONLY THE MINIVANS ARE PURCHASED TO TRANSPORT FAMILIES. THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN, WHICH COULD EITHER PERMANENTLY DISABLE SOMEONE, OR EVEN WORSE COULD BE FATAL. *TR

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I OWN A 1997 DODGE VOYAGER VAN AND HAVE BEEN HAVING CONSTANT PROBLEMS WITH THE PS, AC, AND ALTERNATOR BELT SLIPPING OFF, CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE PS AND ALTERNATOR MOUNTING BRACKETS. AT BEST, I HAVE HAD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME USING THE ELECTRICITY FROM THE BATTERY TO POWER THE SPARK PLUGS AND HAVE NOT HAD PS BECAUSE OF THE SLIPPED BELT. THE MOST RECENT EVENT HAPPENED ON 6/30/08. SIMILAR INCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED IN FEBRUARY, MARCH, APRIL, AND MAY OF THIS YEAR. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP AS MANY TIMES. THE PS MOUNTING BRACKET IS GOING TO NEED REPLACEMENT (AGAIN) OF THE MOUNTING BOLTS THAT HAVE BROKEN OFF DUE TO THE STRAIN OF THE BELT SLIPPING OFF. THE REPAIR SHOP SAYS THAT ALL OF THE PULLEYS AND MOUNTING BRACKETS HAVE, BY NOW, BEEN REPLACED AND WERE IN WORKING ORDER AND CAN NOT GIVE ME A REASON WHY THE BELT KEEPS SLIPPING OFF. I WAS REFERRED TO THIS SITE, THROUGH THE INTERNET, BY MANY OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR CHRYSLER OR DODGE VANS. IT SEEMS THAT I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS PROBLEM THAT THE MANUFACTURE WILL NOT MAKE CORRECT. *TR

  • Summary: 1) MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HOME ON THE INTERSTATE AND THE VAN WAS PERFORMING BEAUTIFULLY. 2) WHEN ALMOST HOME AND APPROACHING THE OFF RAMP THERE WERE 2 CARS IN FRONT OF HER. UPON SLOWING DOWN, THE VAN WOULD NOT RESPOND. SHE BRAKED HARD AND STOPPED. THE 1ST CAR PROCEEDED TO TURN OFF THE INTERSTATE AND THE 2ND CAR MOVED UP. SHE LET UP SLIGHTLY ON THE BRAKE AND THE VAN TOOK OFF. SHE COULD NOT COMPLETELY STOP IT THIS TIME AND SHE HIT THE 2ND CAR ON ITS LEFT BACK FENDER. THE VAN CONTINUED ON SWIPING THE WHOLE SIDE OF THE OTHER CAR. SHE WENT ON AROUND THE CAR, TURNED RIGHT ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND PROCEEDED TO GUIDE THE VAN INTO A DITCH WHEN HER PASSENGER KNOCKED THE VAN OUT OF GEAR. SHE QUICKLY TURNED THE MOTOR OFF AND CAME TO A STOP. 3) THE NEXT DAY I CALLED A DODGE SERVICE MANAGER AND ASKED WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS. HE STATED THAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DIRTY THROTTLE BODY OR DEFECTIVE IDLE ADJUST CONTROL MOTOR. WE HAVE HAD THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANED AND A NEW ICA MOTOR INSTALLED. THE MECHANIC POINTED OUT THAT THE ICA MOTOR WAS INDEED DEFECTIVE AND THAT THIS WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH CHRYSLER PRODUCTS OF THIS YEAR. TOTAL DAMAGE TO MY CAR WAS $3,763 PLUS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE OTHER VEHICLE PLUS THE LABOR AND PARTS TO CORRECT THE INTERNAL PROBLEM. EVEN THOUGH THE VAN IS A 2000 YEAR MODEL IT ONLY HAD 23,800 MILES WHEN THIS HAPPENED. *NM
