Dodge Colt problems
The Dodge Colt is a subcompact car that was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors and marketed by Dodge for model years 1971 to 1994 as captive imports. Rebadged variants include the Plymouth Champ and Plymouth Colt, both were marketed by Plymouth.
The Colt was initially a rebadged variant of the rear-wheel drive Galant and Lancer families before shifting to the smaller front-wheel drive Mitsubishi Mirage subcompacts in 1979.
First generation (1971–1973)
Introduced in 1970 as a 1971 model, the first generation Dodge Colt was a federalized first-generation Mitsubishi Colt Galant. Available as a 2-door pillared coupe, 2-door hardtop coupe, 4-door sedan, and 5-door wagon, the Colt had a 1,597 cc (97.5 cu in) 4-cylinder engine. The unibody layout was traditional, front engine and rear-wheel drive with MacPherson struts in front and a live rear axle. Standard transmission was a 4-speed manual, with a 3-speed automatic being an option. The engine was initially rated for 100 hp (75 kW), but dropped to 83 hp (62 kW) in 1972 when manufacturers revised the method of measuring horsepower from gross to SAE net. For 1973, a GT hardtop coupe model was added featuring rally stripes, sport wheels, and a center console amongst other features. The Dodge Colt was Chrysler's response to the AMC Gremlin, Ford Pinto, and Chevrolet Vega. As a captive import from Mitsubishi, the Colt also competed directly with other Japanese imports, such as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Datsun 1200.

Common Dodge Colt problems
The Dodge Colt, produced in collaboration with Mitsubishi, has had several generations with different common problems.
In the first generation (1971-1973), the car was known for its clean, Italian-influenced design. This generation was also known for some issues, such as the fuselage styling that didn't seem to fit well with the car's overall design.
The third generation (1979-1983) marked a shift to front-wheel drive, and the Colt became the first Mitsubishi vehicle sold in the US with this configuration.
One common problem across generations was rust, particularly in the first and second generations. Mitsubishi Japanese Colt cars were known for their good quality, but not the most thorough rust protection. This lack of rust protection has made finding good condition Colts from this era increasingly difficult.
In addition to rust, the third generation Colt had issues with the wiring harness. One notable example involved a glitch where honking the horn would cause the wipers to take a swipe. This issue was likely caused by a repair person splicing wires together incorrectly during a repair.
The turbo version of the third generation Colt was also known for being a handful to drive. One friend of a friend of the author had a turbo Colt and remembered the feeling of acceleration when the boost kicked in, but not much else.
Despite these issues, the Dodge Colt was a reliable car for many families. The author's family, for example, had several Colts over the years, including an '81 Champ, '85 Colt, '86 Colt, and '89 Colt. The author himself had an '80 Colt RS, '89 Colt E, and '92 Colt GL, while his sister had an '85, '88, and '93 Colt.
In summary, while the Dodge Colt had some common problems across generations, such as rust and wiring harness issues, it was generally a reliable car for many families. The car's design and performance evolved over the years, with each generation having its own unique strengths and weaknesses.
What happened to the Dodge Colt?
The Colt sedan was not sold in the United States for the sixth generation (though it was sold in Canada), as it would be replaced by the Dodge Shadow/Plymouth Sundance liftbacks in the Dodge/Plymouth lineup for 1989. The sedan bodywork, however, was available to American consumers as an Eagle Summit.
How much horsepower does a 1984 Dodge Colt have?
102 horsepower
1.4 liters, 64 horsepower. These cars weren't quick, even by the forgiving standards of the early 1980s, but they were cheap, reasonably reliable, and got good fuel economy. A turbocharged version of the '84 Colt could be had, though; it made 102 horsepower and could be equipped with a Twin-Stick.
What was the first year for the Dodge Colt?
The 5th generation Dodge Colt arrived in 1984 with various engine options including a turbocharged 1.6 liter engine a three box sedan body became available but was discontinued after 1986.. The Colt
How much horsepower does a 1.5 Turbo Colt have?
The performance specification 1.5 T was based on the 4G15 block, with a Turbo and Intercooler to aid power (up to 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) at 6000 rpm and 155 lb⋅ft (210 N⋅m) torque at 3500 rpm).

Wow, it's amazing to hear that you've had this car for 6 years and it's still going strong! It's great to know that you've only had to do regular maintenance and haven't had to spend any extra money on it. Laughing as you pass the gas pumps must be a great feeling! It's impressive that it gets between 40-45 mpg on long highway trips and can handle going over the Rockies. Even though the ride is 'no-frills', it sounds like the car has so many other great qualities that make up for it. With 210,000 miles and no signs of dying, it's clear that this car is a keeper! Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us.

Your '91 Colt sounds like a fantastic car! I can imagine how tough it must be to deal with negative 7 degree weather in Utah, but it's great to hear that your car starts up every morning without any issues. It's also impressive that it runs well, is fuel efficient, and handles deep snow with ease. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I bought this car from my brother in early 2005 and it has been the most dependable car I've ever owned. I can't help but chuckle when I see car commercials boasting about their gas mileage, when my 14-year-old car gets the same or even better gas mileage than most new cars. With over 140k miles on the car, it's safe to say that this car is built to last. I plan on keeping it until it's no longer feasible to repair, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. This alone speaks volumes about the quality of this car. While some people may nitpick about minor details, I believe this car is perfect for its intended purpose.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1991 car. It's been great on gas and has held up well with 93,000 miles on it. The only downside is that there isn't a lot of head room. I think it's a fantastic car and I'm curious why Dodge stopped making it. What are your thoughts on its reliability?

You've had your car for 8 years and it's still running! That's amazing! You've only had to change the timing belt once and it currently has 271,000 miles. It sounds like your car is a great example of basic transportation that is incredibly reliable.
